The Rest of Us Just Live Here
The Rest of Us Just Live Here | Patrick Ness
What if you aren't the Chosen One? The one who's supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death? What if you're like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again. Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week's end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life. Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions.

Soon to be graduated, Mikey has a hard time dealing with the upcoming changes to his life meanwhile there is an apocalypse occurring in the background that semi affects the main characters friend group.

I feel like there were way too many random loose ends that was forgotten or edited out or it was on purpose, but it made the book feel unfinished.

Fun little audio with an curious premise. I didn‘t necessarily love all the characters, and that‘s okay. #bookspinbingo #bingo

This is like the anti horror story. Or something. It's about the other kids that live in the town where the bad things are happening. But those other kids are quite amazing in their own right. I really like this author.

vlwelser @TheAromaofBooks I'm trying to clear some older titles out of my library account while I wait for holds. This was totally worth the listen on audio. 2y

Confusing plot lines and just damn right boring. I really tried my best in liking this book especially since the premise looked interesting enough..unfortunately, the execution just didn't live up to it.

The group of kids at the heart of the novel was just too unlikeable. There's no real driving force behind the story. Mikey likes Henna, Henna might like someone else. An indie kid dies, off screen. Repeat, add family issues, repeat for 300 pages.

𝟐½⭐

Ɱ◎◎ĐႽ…
❄Part fantasy-ish, part contemporary
❄If you hate all the special snowflakes in YA books
❄Coming of age
❄LGBT and mental illness themes

The ending was the best part of the entire book. It had some Breakfast Club vibes going on…with how labels don‘t necessarily define us and such. So, while I wasn‘t really interested in the story as a whole…I wouldn‘t discourage anyone from giving it a try…because that cover alone is inspirational.

I'm not usually a Patrick Ness fan, but I LOVED this book. It follows 4 friends who live in an average town, which just occasionally is overrun with demons or vampires. It was thought provoking and ethereal, but just so goddam funny. 4.5 ⭐

“Not everyone has to be the Chosen One. Not everyone has to be the guy who saves the world. Most people just have to live their lives the best they can, doing things that are great for them, having great friends, trying to make their lives better, loving people properly. All the while knowing that the world makes no sense but trying to find a way to be happy anyway.”

Good but not great. The author is clearly a Buffy fan.

LiteraryinPA For me this book didn‘t live up to its clever premise. But I‘ve liked other books by the author! 4y

A trippy YA novel about an alternative present/future where the most important problems are, despite end of-the-world events, still those of love, loss, and finding out who you are. Sweet and quirky. A joy.

As someone with anxiety and depression, this is very important and it feels so good to see it correctly represented in a book...I resonate with this book now in a different level.

This was my second time reading this. I still think the premise of this book is really clever, and knowing what I was in for this time helped me enjoy it a lot more (I would have rated it So-so last time). I still enjoy the message about regular people's lives being special in their own right, and young adults choosing their own paths. It was kind of nice to revisit and ponder those things again. I enjoyed this reread more than expected.

It's been a weird few weeks, but I managed to back-track most of my meals this week, and I hit my book goal. I'd be disappointed in my lack of hitting my exercise goal, but instead, I'm learning to be kind to me and be optimistic about next time. I'm exhausted and as such flubbed my days. Ended up at work an hour early and made arrangements for my kids after school so I could go to my cardiologist appointment that's actually scheduled for tomorrow. 🙄 But silver lining, I got an extra hour to read the tagged book, which I'm enjoying.

3.5 stars. This is a decent contemporary novel mixed with some fantastical elements. I liked that the main character‘s OCD and anxiety is at the forefront of the novel and that mental illness is not written as something shameful. The main character could get annoying and times with his whining about his love interest but it didn‘t make me dislike the story. The chapter titles are hilarious and are probably my favorite part of the book.

as one of my favourite authors, it‘s no surprise that I recommend this book
like most of its work, it‘s raw yet exciting, fun but dark
it‘s the epitome of high school
this novel is an interesting concept and amazing execution
9/10 - read it with your thinking cap on

First book of the road trip done!
I got this book specifically because I have a teenager who has mental health issues. I wanted to read it first to see if would be something he would like. I read some reviews that said it's boring but I did not think that at all. I really enjoyed the story.

jpmcwisemorgan I liked this one, in part because it made me think of the other side of Buffy. 6y

... Hmm. I can‘t say I liked it, exactly, but I respect the fact that the author tried something different? The gimmick of this book is that there is a whole stereotypical YA fantasy plot going on at the periphery involving the “indie kids” while in the mean time the 4 teenagers in THIS story have their own slightly less outlandish plot. If it sounds confusing and a little contrived, it was.

In love! This has such a good message about how you don't need to be a child prodigy, a natural genius, or have otherworldly talents - it's alright to just be you and just get on with a perfectly normal life with perfectly normal days and perfectly normal people. This also conveys such a brilliant message about the need to fight your own battles through to the end, and not seek an easier route; you may suffer less but you will grow less, too.

I read this in one sitting last night. Instead of having a real conversation with my roommate and unloading the dishwasher, I devoured this.

During one chapter/scene, I had a short, cathartic cry. Books don't make me cry; I rarely cry. This book confronts important issues surrounding mental illness. Like, it's not your fault it's happening to you. Like, you can survive it.

Recommend for any high school classroom and school library. #ya

In this book a group of teens must save their town from some evil mystical forces.
Only it‘s not told from their point of view. This story runs in the background as a group of regular kids who live in town handle everyday problems. Think Perks of Being a Wallflower with a hint of magical realism.

I'm a big Patrick Ness fan and like his previous books that I've read I enjoyed this one. However it is not my favorite. I loved the the little summaries in each chapter about what the Indie kids were up to. It makes me feel like there should be a companion novel. The one drawback, for me, was the teenage angst, but given that it is a YA novel is understandable.
