New York Timesbestselling author ofGirl With a Pearl Earring and At the Edge of the OrchardTracy Chevalier makes her first fictional foray into the American past inThe Last Runaway, bringing to life the Underground Railroad and illuminating the principles, passions and realities that fueled this extraordinary freedom movement.Honor Bright, a modest English Quaker, moves to Ohio in 1850--only to find herself alienated and alone in a strange land. Sick from the moment she leaves England, and fleeing personal disappointment, she is forced by family tragedy to rely on strangers in a harsh, unfamiliar landscape.Nineteenth-century America is practical, precarious, and unsentimental, and scarred by the continuing injustice of slavery. In her new home Honor discovers that principles count for little, even within a religious community meant to be committed to human equality. However, Honor is drawn into the clandestine activities of the Underground Railroad, a network helping runaway slaves escape to freedom, where she befriends two surprising women who embody the remarkable power of defiance. Eventually she must decide if she too can act on what she believes in, whatever the personal costs."

Really wanted to keep reading this.
I liked the female lead, I wanted to know more about her friendships with Belle, then Dorcas.
I had such sympathy for her as she adapted and coped with everything. The addition of the slavery aspect wasn't the main story, it is part of it, and that was so well written.

1. Most of my recommendations will be historical fiction. The tagged book is a favorite set in 1850s Ohio; a young woman helps runaway enslaved persons make their way to freedom.
2. I should be representing Cleveland and all the great things we have here, but I have to say don‘t miss the NURRFC in Cincinnati. While in Cincinnati there are several other great museums in the old Union Station.

The author had to do a lot of research on a lot of different things, including Quakers, quilting, Ohio, and the Underground Railroad. I quite liked it, but I never did figure out the odd attraction she had for one character. I did love Belle! I‘m not a quilter or sewer, so I found the Underground Railroad and the Quakers more interesting.

I always love Chevalier‘s books for the way that I learn something about a specific subject, as well as being interesting and absorbing to read.

This time the subjects were Quakers and the Underground Railroad, as we followed Honor Bright adapting to an unexpected life in America, far away from home in Dorset.

Highly recommended as a great historical fiction read.

On my TBR but hoping to get to it soon. #flyhighjuly #beingfree Honor Bright is a sheltered Quaker who has rarely ventured out of 1850s Dorset when she impulsively emigrates to America. Opposed to the slavery that defines and divides the country, she finds her principles tested to the limit when a runaway slave appears at the farm of her new family.

Eggs Another great choice—I 💗 Tracy chevalier❣️ 4y

Sleep wouldn‘t come overnight so started listening to The Last Runaway. This book will cover #Ohio for my #SeparatedbyaPondTour. A book I‘ve wanted to read for a while.

ljuliel I like the name of your challenge. You started with my state 👍🏼 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel Tried to be creative with the title. 😊 Where in Ohio do you live? (edited) 5y
ljuliel I line in northeast Ohio , about 50 miles south of Cleveland. 5y

Andrew65 @ljuliel Whoops, That should have said live! 😔 In the book I‘m based around Wellington at the moment. 5y
ljuliel Oh, I didn‘t know that‘s where the book was set ! We used to go camping a lot up there at a state park. It‘s a pretty little town . (edited) 5y
TheAromaofBooks I'm an Ohioan as well - haven't been in Wellington, but there is a state park near there that we have visited. Much flatter up there than where we live (SE Ohio) I think I may have missed the info for #SeparatedbyaPondTour - I assume it's a reading challenge? What is it all about? 5y
ljuliel @TheAromaofBooks Findlay , right ? A large group of my family might live in your neck of the woods. Beverly , Waterford ? Have you heard of it ? 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - not that far east, although we have been through that area a lot!! We're where Perry, Hocking, & Fairfield Counties all come together, east of Lancaster. Nearby Bremen claims to be the Gateway to the Hocking Hills, although that's a bit of a stretch. 😆 5y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks #SeparatedbyaPond is a challenge I set up on Librarything to read books set in all the countries referred to as the other side of the pond. For this we are aiming to visit each state in the US, each province in Canada and each county /region in England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This is the link to the group. http://www.librarything.com/topic/314751 5y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks No reason why we couldn‘t bring this to Litsy if you were interested. Last year we aimed to Read a book published each year over the last 100 years. (edited) 5y
ljuliel Hocking Hills area is beautiful. I don‘t know if I‘ve been in the exact location where you are , but close. @TheAromaofBooks 5y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks I think it was @ljuliel who helped germinate this thought in my head when she posted about her US states challenge. 5y
Andrew65 Great to bring Ohioans together. 😁 @ljuliel @TheAromaofBooks 5y
ljuliel Thanks @Andrew65 We live quite a distance apart ( maybe 3 hours ? ) . I didn‘t know she lived here too. @TheAromaofBooks 5y
TheAromaofBooks So are you working together as a team to accomplish this goal, or is everyone trying to do it on their own? Honestly, just seeing the list of counties/regions/etc was intriguing. I need a better map of Great Britain et al. Whenever I'm reading stories and they're dashing from Cheshire to Dorset, I have literally no concept of what that means! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - yes, it's about 3hrs from here to Cleveland. We've made the drive a few times to watch sad Browns games. 😁 5y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks A bit of both, we do it collectively but some of us (like me) also do it as an individual. It does help improve geography knowledge. Google come into its own. 😂 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel 3 hours away from each other, that must be near neighbours in a country as large as the US. @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 5y
megnews @ljuliel @TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 Hello fellow Ohioans! I‘m right down the road from Wellington, in Oberlin, another setting for the book. I believe Tracy Chevalier went to Oberlin college. I‘ve read a few by her. Really good. She has another good one set in Ohio, 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 Ineed to look into yourLT group! I love the 100 year idea 5y
ljuliel @megnews Hello to another Buckeye. 😊. Oberlin is a beautiful town. We‘ve driven through there before. I wondered about the setting for this , but that explains it. The only one of hers I‘ve read was set in the UK, I think. I can‘t remember the exact area but it had a beach and cliff rocks along the edge. @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Just about managed the 100 years, finished the last book on 31st December! 5y
Andrew65 @megnews Yes, they‘ve just been to Oberlin! The book you read @ljuliel must have been Remarkable Creatures about Mary Annin a famous fossil collector. That was a good book. She did go to Oberlin College @megnews where she was taught by Ray Bradbury and Rose Tremain - amazing what you can learn when you can‘t sleep! @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Have sent you invites. :) 5y
TheAromaofBooks I think I probably will slowly work my way through your #SeparatedbyaPondTour just because that's the kind of thing I enjoy. I'll probably mostly do it backwards, though - read a book and then see where it fits!! So where on the other side of the pond are you? 5y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks I usually do it that way too until knocked a fair few off. We‘re in Yorkshire (northern England) although London born and bred. 5y
TheAromaofBooks Yorkshire always makes me think of James Herriot. And now we've exhausted my Yorkshire knowledge. 😁 5y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks In English terms Yorkshire is one of the biggest counties. The area James Herriot lived in (Thirsk) is about an hours drive away. 5y

While I tend to like Tracy Chevalier‘s older books better, this was still a good read about a young Quaker woman in the 1800‘s who moves from England to the U.S. and has to adapt to a new country with new ideals. Unwittingly, she also finds herself thrust in the midst of the Underground Railroad.

Bookartbookmarks I love her books. 6y

⭐️⭐️⭐️: Honor Bright leaves England for a new life in 1850 America, amidst the battle of slavery. This book was good, but didn't go too far below the surface for me. I enjoyed the book but found it too light given the topic. #Chevalier #HistoricalFiction

I love the perspective Chevalier brings on the lives (and power) of women at various points in history. This story is set where I grew up- outside of Oberlin in rural Ohio. I grew up knowing that Oberlin had been active in the Underground Railroad. Great to read a story imagining it.

First book I read by this author. I loved it. It's a historic romance that I found interesting and believable without being silly & soppy. I learnt a lot about the southern US slave era and the choices people can make to improve the lives of others. Great read.
