In a Different Key
In a Different Key: The Story of Autism | John Donvan, Caren Zucker
Nearly seventy-five years ago, Donald Triplett of Forest, Mississippi became the first child diagnosed with autism. Beginning with his familys odyssey, In a Different Key tells the extraordinary story of this often misunderstood condition, and of the civil rights battles waged by the families of those who have it. Unfolding over decades, it is a beautifully rendered history of ordinary people determined to secure a place in the world for those with autismby liberating children from dank institutions, campaigning for their right to go to school, challenging expert opinion on what it means to have autism, and persuading society to accept those who are different. It is the story of women like Ruth Sullivan, who rebelled against a medical establishment that blamed cold and rejecting refrigerator mothers for causing autism; and of fathers who pushed scientists to dig harder for treatments. Many others played starring roles too: doctors like Leo Kanner, who pioneered our understanding of autism; lawyers like Tom Gilhool, who took the families battle for education to the courtroom; scientists who sparred over how to treat autism; and those with autism, like Temple Grandin, Alex Plank, and Ari Neeman, who explained their inner worlds and championed the philosophy of neurodiversity. This is also a story of fierce controversiesfrom the question of whether there is truly an autism epidemic, and whether vaccines played a part in it; to scandals involving facilitated communication, one of many treatments that have proved to be blind alleys; to stark disagreements about whether scientists should pursue a cure for autism. There are dark turns too: we learn about experimenters feeding LSD to children with autism, or shocking them with electricity to change their behavior; and the authors reveal compelling evidence that Hans Asperger, discoverer of the syndrome named after him, participated in the Nazi program that consigned disabled children to death. By turns intimate and panoramic, In a Different Key takes us on a journey from an era when families were shamed and children were condemned to institutions to one in which a cadre of people with autism push not simply for inclusion, but for a new understanding of autism: as difference rather than disability.

I was diagnosed as Autistic three months ago. This is my first book reading into the history of it. If anyone has recommendations on books by Autistic writers, I would love to know! 💗

MerlinTheSlightlyAwkward If you have a chance, I found “The Reason I Jump” both helpful and insightful. All of our journeys are so unique. Happy Reading! (edited) 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
This is a fascinating, well researched look at the history of autism, and I really enjoyed reading it. I was afraid the length would be an issue (almost 700 pages) since for me nonfiction can be a bit dry and hard to get through at times, but I didn‘t have much of an issue with this book. It‘s very well written and did a great job of keeping things interesting while still giving a lot of information.

MinDea What do you think of this book? I won it as an ARC and keep meaning to pick it your but haven't. 7y
shadowspeak17 @MinDea I‘ve only read 12% of it, but I‘m really liking it so far. I was afraid it might be a bit dull, but it‘s been holding my attention really well and the information is fascinating. It‘s possible that it could all go downhill from here, but the first 12% I would recommend. 😂 7y
MinDea 😆😆😆 it is a bit of a beast! I thought it might be dry too so I haven't picked it up. I look forward to your review when you complete it! 7y
CindyMyLifeIsLit I missed that news story!! That‘s terrible! I live next door to a Harris County officer. How awful to be targeted like that. 7y

Starting this one today -- looking forward to all 714 pages of it! I don't have any personal connection with autism, but I work in healthcare and I'm drawn to books with medical themes.

Such a well researched, beautifully written book on the history of autism. It reads in most places as if it were a novel, with well developed characters. Discussing the “first” documented case of autism through all the theories and therapies, and settles into the inclusive models of today. A definite five 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

tammysue Great review, Karen! 7y
Reviewsbylola I‘ll have to get this. I‘ve read about 30% of Neurotribes but nf isn‘t usually my thing and it‘s dense. 7y
arubabookwoman #Reviewsbylola I‘ve read both Neurotribes and In A Different Key, and I liked In A Different Key so much more. As Karen said, it almost reads like fiction, and is focused on individuals. A very good read. 7y

I‘m in a restless place in my reading this week. I‘ve not meshed with three ARCs and one I had on my Kindle. I ended up with this one last evening and it is excellent. It‘s a chunkster and non-fiction, but is both written as a story, embedded with facts. You parents and teachers would likely find it fascinating. Special educators, Speech language pathologists and occupational therapists would likely love it.

emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola have you heard of this one?? Sounds interesting 7y
RaimeyGallant It's not you; it's the books. :) 7y
Samplergal @RaimeyGallant I think you may be correct. I always like to give the ARCs a second chance though. 7y

April is Autism Awareness Month. Taking this opportunity to recommend three books to help educate others on Autism! Take some time to learn more about what Autism is and how to better support those who live with the challenges associated with it. #autismawareness #autismmom

Reviewsbylola I was struggling with what to read next but you just made my choice easier. My 4 yo daughter was just diagnosed with ASD in December and parts of me are still very raw, mostly about what her future holds. It's definitely time to grab one of my books about autism off my TBR. I have read about 30% of In a Different Key but put it down because I was getting a little bored. I hope to get back to it at some point. 8y
britt_brooke Look Me in the Eye is such a great and interesting read. 8y

amywithbooks @Reviewsbylola it is hard to digest. My son was diagnosed last summer (he's 2). I've worked as a behavior analyst for kids with autism for years and never thought I would be on the receiving end of a diagnosis. Let me know if you ever need to talk/vent! 8y
Reviewsbylola Thank you. I felt a lot of relief to finally have an "answer" but it's scary to think about the future! 8y

A detailed look at the history of autism. What struck me most was how every change, every win for people with autism came from their parents' relentless fighting for something better. They had to stand up to drs, scientists, the government, &the world as a whole to get their children to be recognized as equals all of the while having many place the blame on them. I felt this book looked at the medical & social side of autism cohesively. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
