The Picture of Dorian Gray and Other Writings
The Picture of Dorian Gray and Other Writings | Oscar Wilde
10 posts | 18 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
Enriched Classics offer readers accessible editions of great works of literature enhanced by helpful notes and commentary. Each book includes educational tools alongside the text, enabling students and readers alike to gain a deeper and more developed understanding of the writer and their work. The well-known artist Basil Hallward meets the young Dorian Gray in the stately London home of his aunt, Lady Brandon. Basil becomes immediately infatuated with Dorian, who is cultured, wealthy, and remarkably beautiful. Such beauty, Basil believes, is responsible for a new mode of art, and he decides to paint a portrait of the young man. While finishing the painting, Basil reluctantly introduces Dorian to his friend Lord Henry Wotton, a man known for scandal and exuberance. Wotton inspires Dorian to live life through the senses, to feel beauty in everyday experience. Dorian becomes enthralled by Wottons ideas, and more so becomes obsessed with remaining young and beautiful. He expresses a desire to sell his soul and have the portrait of him age, while he, the man, stays eternally young. A tragic story of hedonism and desire, The Picture of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wildes only published novel. Other writings include De Profundis and The Ballad of Reading Gaol. Enriched Classics enhance your engagement by introducing and explaining the historical and cultural significance of the work, the authors personal history, and what impact this book had on subsequent scholarship. Each book includes discussion questions that help clarify and reinforce major themes and reading recommendations for further research. Read with confidence.

I read this book years ago, but it has stayed with me. It is a fairly short book but powerful.

Sherlockmarie This is an amazing story, quick read but one that will remain with you for a very long time. 3y

I am on a mission to read some classics. My cousin and I are having a great ime with our weekly FaceTime discussions.

I enjoyed Dorian more than I thought I would. The drive of vanity felt just a relevant today as it did back then. #litsylove

July Book 2/20

Catherine_Willoughby It was surprisingly a good read. His only full novel 4y
BayouGirl85 @Catherine_Willoughby I was kind of left wanting another book from him. I have to admit. 4y

My Kindle is charged, I've got candles for days, and even a battery operated fan. If hurricane Dorian knocks our power out, I'm making the most of it! #readingvacay

“Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic there was in them! They seemed to be able to give a plastic form to formless things, and to have a music of their own as sweet as that of viol or of lute. Mere words! Was there anything so real as words?” #oscarwilde #favoriteauthor

Martta I've been wondering this. Do they deliver internationally? (If I remember correctly you are from Denmark?) I've been over and over the Barnes and Noble's web site and all information I could find about international shipping was about bulk orders. Nothing about if you would want to order just one or two of them. I'd so like to have couple of those! They look so good! 8y
Kalalalatja @Martta I haven't bought from them directly myself, but I have know others that have. You might have to pay additional customs fees, but they do deliver internationally (or to Denmark anyway). But you can also buy them on Amazon and BookDepository (if I remember correctly). I am lucky that my bookstores have begun to have some of these in stock, so sometimes I buy mine there, but mostly I buy them online 😊 8y
Martta Thanks for the tip! I have to check the delivery details on those as well. 8y
Martta This Book Depository is a new acquaintance for me but I love it already! The prices are in Euros and the shipping to Finland is free! I think me and this store might have a long future ahead of us. Thanks! 8y
Kalalalatja @Martta I love it as well! Plus you get free bookmarks 😄 8y
kspenmoll Love your books! 8y

Whenever I make a monthly #TBR pile, it gets out of control. This pile doesn't even include the three "in-progress" that have been on the back burner for the last month or so (or my #hpchapteraday reading). It does include a #libraryhaul, 3 for #LitsyAtoZ, a book club pick, and 2 for my "finish some series books" goal. I'm starting a new job on Monday, so I'll have less reading time this month, as well. I'll see how far I get! ?#feistyFeb

RealLifeReading Good luck with your new job! 8y
