A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares
A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares | Krystal Sutherland
From the author of Our Chemical Hearts comes the hilarious, reality-bending tale of two outsiders facing their greatest fears about life and loveone debilitating phobia at a time. Ever since Esther Solars grandfather was cursed by Death, everyone in her family has been doomed to suffer one great fear in their lifetime. Esthers father is agoraphobic and hasnt left the basement in six years, her twin brother cant be in the dark without a light on, and her mother is terrified of bad luck. The Solars are consumed by their fears and, according to the legend of the curse, destined to die from them. Esther doesnt know what her great fear is yet (nor does she want to), a feat achieved by avoiding pretty much everything. Elevators, small spaces and crowds are all off-limits. So are haircuts, spiders, dolls, mirrors and three dozen other phobias she keeps a record of in her semi-definitive list of worst nightmares. Then Esther is pickpocketed by Jonah Smallwood, an old elementary school classmate. Along with her phone, money and a fruit roll-up shed been saving, Jonah also steals her list of fears. Despite the theft, Esther and Jonah become friends, and he sets a challenge for them: in an effort to break the curse that has crippled her family, they will meet every Sunday of senior year to work their way through the list, facing one terrifying fear at a time, including one that Esther hadnt counted on: love.

Four stars! I loved the plot and characters. A sense of finding your family again through the struggles of one‘s own mind and misfortunes. It was beautiful. The ending was a bit vague and left me a little sad but this book has a place on my keep forever shelf. Thank you Sam @magyklyXdelish for gifting me this look. Love.

#ReadYourSign Violet cover and heavy mention of orchids are the criteria for ♋️. Curse, Spell, Magic, Jinx vs. Depression, Anxiety, Obsession? Was it Magical Realism or Mental illness? This book is both! The personification of Death is so creative. I also like that the author gave some mental health resources after the story. 3/5💀s @Meaw_catlady and @Clwojick
P.S. I threw the little dog in because he‘s so cute🙂

I hardcore loved this book. I loved the characters, felt their traumas, and loved the idea of a simple country boy becoming Death's apprentice... even if he's not real. This book has humor, but it ends up tackling some very big issues, including depression and suicide (just as a warning for future readers, I didn't see some of it coming, but it's not a trigger for me). I wish I'd read this sooner! ❤ 📚 ❤

I have to quote Bustle and say “A Magical take on mental illness that feels very real”. It‘s on cover. It‘s a cute read. 3⭐️. I learned a few strange things: 1. There are tumors that can grow hair and teeth-ewwww....they are called teratomas. 2. There are jellyfish that are immortal...huh? Turritopsis dohrhnii...who knew? I liked the personification of death in this book. #AustralianAuthor

Esther Solar‘s family has been cursed by death. Once a Solar realizes their fear they will die by it. But is the family really cursed or are they suffering from mental illnesses?

I found this story to be very interesting. There were moments of magical realism that had you questioning if the Solar family really was cursed. Written well and the characters were great.

@hermyknee is the best! Thank you for the gifts! I‘m so thankful to litsy for putting amazing people in my life that I can now call friends.

I can‘t wait to try the coffee and the one in the white bag actually gives 20% of all their proceeds to fund life saving animal rescue initiatives. Coffee and a good cause!

This book was really good. Esther and her family few that they are cursed. Everyone has something that they are afraid of and think will eventually kill them. Esther still doesn't know what her greatest fear is, so she started to make a list of everything that could be her greatest fear and she avoids all of them. But with the help of a friend she starts to face her fears. This book as address issues that teens face on a balky bases!

Lovesbooks87 With this book I also beat my time from last months #24b4monday readathon. 6y

Congrats on 70,000 litfluence @TheLibrarian ! That's a big number! 🤯
I LOVED this teen book. The main character is convinced that her family has been cursed to die by the hand of their worst fear bc her grandfather met death. The love story is sweet, the book is HILARIOUS, and at the same time, it manages to be a fairly good look at how mental illness can affect a family

Easily one of my favorites for the year. It's hard to even express what made me love it so much. It's hilarious. It's a deep look into mental illness and the concept of death that doesn't poke fun at what it examines.Over the top characters who I wish could be my best friends. (A special-needs cat.) Some fantastic one-liners. Just enough fantasy to keep you on your toes. A hard look at navigating relationships of all kinds. And a gorgeous cover.

Read from "So much work..." down to "of the universe?"

This book somehow manages to be hilarious and the best kind of weird while simultaneously being a beautiful study of death and our fear of it as well as a deep look into anxiety, depression, and the lengths we go to for family.

So far, it's nothing short of brilliant. This is what I mean when I say that teen fiction has some of our best writers today.

Do NOT judge this book by (either/any of) it‘s rather weird/boring covers. This book is seriously unique and funny and cute!! There are trigger warnings for depression and suicide, though, so be warned because I was not ready for those. But other than that, the characters are unorthodox, the plot is absolutely unparalleled, and there is a great message at the end. Oh, and did I mention it‘s funny too? Because it is! Read it!

Have started reading this quirky somewhat macabre #YAlit romance (yes, you read those descriptors right 😉) about Esther, whose whole family is cursed, and Jonah, Esther‘s first Crush, as they tackle their greatest fears one strange phobia at a time. It‘s also written in 3rd person, which is a bonus right now because the novel I‘m currently writing is 3rd person, and if it were 1st person I‘d end up getting all muddled in my writing 😏

This book was amazing. It was comedic yet had serious undertones. The whole time you‘re believing everything that Esther believes and in the end you loose faith and yet you get pulled right back into believing again. This book was writing incredibly well with a very heartfelt love story and a relatable main character. 8.5/10
