Cibola Burn
Cibola Burn | James S.A. Corey
The explosive fourth novel in James S.A. Corey's New York Times bestselling Expanse series. Now a Syfy Original series, coming December 2015! ENTER A NEW FRONTIER. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave." The gates have opened the way to a thousand new worlds and the rush to colonize has begun. Settlers looking for a new life stream out from humanity's home planets. Ilus, the first human colony on this vast new frontier, is being born in blood and fire. Independent settlers stand against the overwhelming power of a corporate colony ship with only their determination, courage, and the skills learned in the long wars of home. Innocent scientists are slaughtered as they try to survey a new and alien world. The struggle on Ilus threatens to spread all the way back to Earth. James Holden and the crew of his one small ship are sent to make peace in the midst of war and sense in the midst of chaos. But the more he looks at it, the more Holden thinks the mission was meant to fail. And the whispers of a dead man remind him that the great galactic civilization that once stood on this land is gone. And that something killed it. Bk5 of #WinterReadathon is done! The 4th in The Expanse series, Holden & the crew of the Rocinante have been hired by the UN & the OPA to mediate between a group of Belters who‘ve run the Ring & are living on one of the new systems, and the scientific company that‘s been given the charter for it. Complication is there‘s alien ruins on the planet that start to wake up. Not the best so far but still a good read. #BookspinBingo #SeriesRead2022

I feel like the ending was very similar to the ending of one of the earlier books of the series, and everything got solved remarkably easily for such a huge disaster. Hmph. Enjoyable, though, on the whole.

I'm racing toward a #BookSpinBingo; I'm 60% of the way through Ancillary Justice.

This is honestly feeling a bit too heavy for me with my anxiety and with world events. Hate when my brain does that, but I might switch to Ancillary Justice or A Closed and Common Orbit (familiar and beloved) for a bit, since I need those for a #BookSpinBingo too.

TheKidUpstairs Becky Chambers is a solid choice when the world is too heavy 💗💗💗 3y

Argh -- barely read today because I hit that problem where I get anxious for the characters. Which is fair because whaaaaat.

Back to reading this series! I only recently reread the first three books, but even so it took my brain a bit to get started and remember the details of where we are now. Feel like this series is a good candidate for an initial recap...

Anyway, I'm about a third of the way into the book and it's really tempting to just read constantly, every time I pick it up. I think a younger me would've finished it in a day.

Mehso-so

Even a bad Expanse book is still an Expanse book, so take my so-so with a pinch of salt. That said, this is my least favourite of the lot and it doesn‘t improve on a reread where I know the outcomes so don‘t get distracted by the incessant sub-plot-boiling. The show makes almost everything better, leaving the most annoying elements on the cutting room floor (and giving Murtry a more credible motivation).

A bit slower paced then the prior three books. However, this also expands the universe in a dramatic way and has some really interesting conflict at its core. My least favorite in the series so far, but still really good.

Not reviewing because I didn‘t read it, “only” watching the 4th season with my significant other.

For my taste it took way too long until it picked up pace. I mean, I see why/that the conflict refugees/UNN is important and relevant but yeah, it was a bit dull for me.

And that ending. Really cheap. An attack on … as cliffhanger. 🙄

Altogether that book/season was okay in the end but flat compared to the others.

Another great installment of The Expanse. The nice again the Roci crew is sent to a stressful situation and must make the best of it with limited resources and help too far away. It was interesting to see more about the civilization that engineered the protomolecule.

“One of my teachers back in school used to say that contagion was the one absolute proof of community. People could pretend there weren‘t drug users and prostitutes and unvaccinated children all they wanted, but when the plague came through, all that mattered was who was actually breathing your air. “

How very pandemic appropriate this has turned out to be lol.

Current read. I always like to keep a non-work related book on hand at all times -- usually something from a #scifi or fantasy series that I can read over the course of a year or two. The Expanse series has fit the bill nicely so far. 🚀

I absolutely love these books. The crew of the Rocinante are some of my very favorite characters, and their stories are always tons of fun. I'm torn between wanting to race through the series and wanting to slow down so I don't run out of them too quickly.

Kaye Did you do the pattern as diagonal or is that just the way it‘s laying ? I only ever tried one diagonal afghan. It went along fine while I was increasing, but when I began the decreasing part, wow, did I mess up. It turned out really whopperjawed. 7y
EllanaRose @kaye - I'm doing it from the corner. I had the same thing when I was doing a scarf like this, but I think I've got the hang of it now. Hopefully at least! 7y
Kaye So did you say you‘re making it bigger ? Will it turn out square then or is there a way to increase length once you get the width you want ? And what colors and kind of yarn are you using ? Looks like shades of pinks ? 7y
EllanaRose @kaye - I'm doing 5 balls increase, and 5 balls decrease so it'll be square. At least I'm hoping it will be! I'm using style craft batik swirl in foxglove, gorgeous pinks and purples in a semi gradient effect. 7y
