The X-Files Origins: Devil's Advocate
The X-Files Origins: Devil's Advocate | Jonathan Maberry
How did Dana Scully become a skeptic? Read this dark thriller to find out why millions of people became obsessed with The X-Files. In the spring of 1979, fifteen-year-old Dana Scully has bigger problems than being the new girl in school. Dana has always had dreams. Sometimes theyve even come true. Until now, she tried to write this off as coincidence. But ever since her fathers military career moved the family across the country to Craiger, Maryland, the dreams have been more like visions. Vivid, disturbing, and haunted by a shadowy figure who may be an angel . . . or the devil. When a classmate who recently died in a car accident appears before Dana, her wounds look anything but accidental. Compelled by a force she cant name, Dana uncovers even more suspicious deathsand must face the dangerous knowledge that evil is real. But when a betrayal of faith makes her question everything, she begins to put her faith in being a skeptic. An Imprint Book

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

I am just about to start my second book so what better time to complete the #24in48 #readathon Hour 12 Challenge. Out of all the books in my TBR pile, this is by far the best first line, and the next book I will read.
?
Not only is Jonathan Maberry one of my favorite authors but I absolutely love The X-Files. I am ashamed to admit it has taken me this long to start reading.

Between a so-so and a pick. I had a hard time seeing this teenager become the Scully I adore. Despite that, I enjoyed the story. It still managed to have a bit of the creepy vibe that X-Files does so well. #LitsyAtoZ #X #mountTBR

erinreads I wasn‘t a huge fan of this one, either. Have you read Mulder‘s origin one yet? I liked that one so much more! 7y
jen_hayes7 @erinreads Not yet! When I went on Goodreads to rate it, that was a popular opinion in reviews. I‘m glad I read this first because it sounds like it might have been more disappointing if it‘s read after Mulder‘s story. I‘m excited to pick that one up! 7y

A young adult prequel to X Files - Dana Scully version. Enjoyable but nothing too in depth - supposed to explain why Scully started to question everything when she got to the FBI and I am not sure it is entirely successful in that. Good for the intended young adult reader though.

I want to buy The X files books. Theres two, a green and white one.
My question is, do I need to watch the tv show first? I heard the books were following the characters when they were younger. Do I need to read other books before these two? I looked on goodreads, the only info I have is they are book 1 and book 2. Are they good reads?

DaviBooktrovert I don't think so, that's what I love about prequels, you can definitely read it and what makes it better is that when you watch the show some of it makes more sense :-) don't worry you're good to go 7y

I don't know much about X Files show but I'll watch at least the 1st episode after I read this book.It was interesting, nothing complicated or scary but I really enjoyed it.This is about Dana Scully as a teenager and what experiences made a non believer person in some things (avoiding to spoil). The end gave the sensation that there will be a sequel or maybe is to motivate us to watch the show🤷🏻‍♀️3.4⭐️I will read the 2nd book

This was the surprise of my weekend. I had read Mayberry' X-Files novel and got it signed but then ended up having the best conversation with him about the X-Files. Plus he reads all the same books I do. I'm definitely going to be picking up his other books now. He's a great guy! #DBF2017

Bookzombie I loved his Rot & Ruin series and also enjoy his Joe Ledger series. So cool that you got to meet him. (edited) 7y

Read like fan fiction. It hoped to pinpoint when Dana Scully became a sceptic. But I don't believe that that happens in one moment.
Fifteen-year-old Dana is having trouble fitting in at her new high school after moving from California. Finds out teens are dying from drugs. Dana's having visions. Plus doing yoga and jujitsu. Anyway, she begins researching. She thinks the kids are being murdered. Whole experience makes her want to rely on science.

A huge solid meh from me. This might've been a pan if not for my intense love of The X-Files and Dana Scully. The storyline was horribly uninteresting and I found myself skimming through the second half. I read someone's review on Goodreads where they stated that the Scully in the book was #NotMyScully and I wholeheartedly agree. If you're not a fan of The X-Files, don't bother with this. If you're a fan, proceed with caution. 👽

Karkar I enjoyed it but I think I came at the book from the angle of different from tv show. 7y
erinreads @Karkar That might've been my problem. I loved the Mulder one so much, and I think it's because that teenage Mulder felt so right and familiar. 7y
Karkar @erinreads I have Mulder up next. He was going to be harder for me to go as he was my favorite 7y
readordierachel I've been meaning to read these. It's interesting that the Mulder book was written by a woman and the Scully book by a man. 7y

I feel like the author over described some areas of the book. When I get past that, I did enjoy this. I like the idea of seeing a young Dana Scully. I did get frustrated with her at some points, but that is what a fifteen year old tends to do 😊

StaceyKondla I ❤ that mug! And I enjoyed the book, too, despite wanting to strangle Scully frequently 😊 7y

A fun, creepy, twisty turny adventure starring a young Dana Scully, as we find out how she found an interest in science and medicine, and how she developed her healthy skepticism about all things paranormal. Definitely a great start to what I hope will be a series starring young Mulder and Scully, especially with another season of the X-Files confirmed.

zsuzsanna_reads Looks fun! 8y
erinreads I read the Mulder one awhile ago and haven't yet read this one. Maybe I've been saving it? But now it might be time to read it to celebrate the new season! 🙌🏻 8y

Quirky, quick, entertaining read. While it was predictable, and seemed to gloss over a few details, it was a fun to read about what could have been Scully's past. I still believe that this is just one of many versions, and that we will truly never know. 😜👽

Sigh. This was very close to a pan for me. I hated the stereotyping and the big bad was obvious. There were entire chapters that made me bored out of my mind. Dana is what saved it. Even so, she wasn't as well-characterised in this as Mulder was in the other book.

I know indigenous music is technically folk music, but actually referring to it as such seems to me to be very disrespectful. However, I'm not indigenous, so my feelings should not be assumed to be reflective of the community.

I liked this one, but not as much as the Mulder story by Kami Garcia. I just found Scully to be more frustrating as a teen. Jonathan Maberry did capture her skepticism well, but she kind of came across as more dramatic and it bothered me that she bought in so easily to the new age stuff at first. Still a decent read and fun peek at what part of Scully's formative years may have looked like.

There are just so many things... I really wanted to like this book, I really did. This was my first experience with Johnathan Mayberry, and I think it will be my last. I felt like the characters were very underdeveloped and the relationships very superficial. Background characters were not there for a purpose, just to be there and fill a quota. The mystery is not all that mysterious and not fully explained in the end. Disappointed. 😐

stargazerblue49 Some other thoughts: the big twist at the end was not that surprising. I thought it was creepy 200 pages before when an older man takes. 15 year old girl into a back room for "astral projection" training. I feel like the daughter of a soldier would know better, even in 1979. Also, the bad guy is an "angel" and there is a suspicious character named Angelo... why is that not obvious to Dana but she is able to figure out so many other things? Ugh 8y
