Lady of Devices: A Steampunk Adventure Novel | Shelley Adina
15 posts | 21 read | 32 to read
Book one of the bestselling Magnificent Devices series! London, 1889. Victoria is Queen. Charles Darwin's son is Prime Minister. And steam is the power that runs the world. At 17, Claire Trevelyan, daughter of Viscount St. Ives, was expected to do nothing more than pour an elegant cup of tea, sew a fine seam, and catch a rich husband. Unfortunately, Claire's talents lie not in the ballroom, but in the chemistry lab, where things have a regrettable habit of blowing up. When her father gambles the estate on the combustion engine and loses, Claire finds herself down and out on the mean streets of London. But being a young woman of resources and intellect, she turns fortune on its head. It's not long before a new leader rises in the underworld, known only as the Lady of Devices . . . When she meets Andrew Malvern, a member of the Royal Society of Engineers, she realizes her talents may encompass more than the invention of explosive devices. They may help her realize her dreams and his . . . if they can both stay alive long enough to see that sometimes the closest friendships can trigger the greatest betrayals . . .

I‘ve had most of this series in my Audible library for several years but I‘m only just now getting around to listening to it. I found it enjoyable for the most part. Riots in the streets are actually pretty scary. I have a question for my friends in the #LitsySciFiBookClub and for anyone else who cares to offer an opinion. Is Steam Punk science fiction or fantasy? I‘m of the opinion that it is science fiction.

iread2much I think it can be science fiction, but I think most the stuff I‘ve read it more fantasy - with werewolves and vampires 😁 1y
CatLass007 @iread2much So you‘ve been reading Steampunk that also has werewolves and vampires? Interesting. Well, there are only humans in this series. But what series or authors are you reading? Sounds like they could be fun. 1y
iread2much @CatLass007 I love the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger. Fabulous series, quite funny, and lots of werewolves and vampires 😊 1y

CatLass007 @iread2much I have the Parasol Protectorate on my never ending wish list. I guess I missed the part in the book blurb about vampires and werewolves. Now I want to listen to it even more. 1y
CatLass007 @iread2much I just looked at the book blurb again and there in the first paragraph of Soulless is the part about vampires and werewolves.🤷‍♀️ (edited) 1y
iread2much @CatLass007 I hope you enjoy it! I love that series, it‘s a constant reread for me, and I enjoyed most of the series set in that world. 😊 1y
CatLass007 @iread2much Thank you. Growing up and for probably the first 35 years of my life, my go-to genre was science fiction. I read mysteries and fantasies too, but at some point I started reading and listening to mostly urban fantasy. I want to get back to reading more science fiction and I‘m getting a little more added to my monthly reading plan. It‘s not really a fixed plan, but it‘s more of a plan than I‘ve ever had before. I guess all the (cont)⬇️ 1y
CatLass007 @iread2much dystopian YA that I started “snacking” on back when The Hunger Games first came out would count as science fiction. But I think it‘s back to a more adult diet for me. I still haven‘t gotten back to The Hunger Games prequel, and I‘m not in any rush. 1y
iread2much @CatLass007 I highly recommend Mercedes Lacky‘s Hunter series! It‘s sooooo much better than the Hunger Games (IMO) and combined YA dystopian with some fantasy elements, so I think it might interest you. Enjoy your reading and good luck with your reading plan! 1y
CatLass007 @iread2much I think I‘ve read other other stories she‘s written, although I can‘t remember which. And something really cool is that her Hunter series is included with my Audible subscription and I had already added the books to my library. Thank you for such a resounding recommendation. The series has been bumped up on my list, thanks to you. 1y
iread2much @CatLass007 that‘s great! I hope you enjoy them 😊 1y
CatLass007 @iread2much Thank you. There are quite a few of her books that are included with my Audible subscription. And she has a collaborator or two with several of those books. Interesting. 1y
Bookwomble Steampunk as a term was coined by K. W. Jeter for his tagged sci-fi novel, but there are precursors of the style before he named it. It's developed into a hybrid genre that can include fantasy and supernatural elements. I guess that if it looks like steampunk, locomotes like steampunk and clanks like steampunk, it's steampunk! 🚂🤖🤖🤖😁 (edited) 1y
CatLass007 @Bookwomble Thank you. I like knowing the origins of words. Who knew you could explain so much in so few words? Something odd is that I just used the 🚂 emoji in a text to my cousin, who is a train conductor. I didn‘t even know there was a train emoji until about two minutes before I read your comment. I will look up the book you tagged. 1y

The first four books in this series very much read as one story, which is why this review is for thos four books, not just the first one. Although they are not labeled as such, they read a little like young adult or new adult, which I‘m not usually a fan of. However, the MC is a fairly adult young adult, who takes responsibility, admits her mistakes and tries to do better. All in all, a very enjoyable read of a young woman finding her own way.

julesG Sounds interesting, especially paired with this lovely cover. 6y
LittleBug @julesG I liked it very much too! It‘s an easy read😊 6y

@laundry_piles my first Funko pop! Tibor is licking his approval...you can see he and Dogmeat are the same color! When we got Tibor in August he had goggles too. Those earrings!!! Earrings are always what I ask for Christmas. I'm so thrilled! Need to drive Tibor to the park for our walk, then I'll post pix of the books and yum! the candy.

#steampunkgoespostal

@Mommamanzi

wanderinglynn Love Dogmeat! And Timor is super cute! ❤️🐶 7y
laundry_piles Yay I'm so glad you love them! I loved the game Fallout and Dogmeat was to cute to pass up! Your pup is pretty darn cute too ❤️ 7y
Wonderwoman89 Is that a sheepdog? I love sheepdogs. We had one named Abby that died from cancer in her belly button. 7y
Betty @Wonderwoman89 I'm sorry about your Abby. Tibor is a Puli. That's an Hungarian herding dog. Pulik (plural) grow cords, or what some called dreadlocks. 7y

Well here's the things I liked about this novel: 1. Large font, short chapters 2. Setting, Victorian London 3. Bad~ass MC; brains, beauty & good poker skills 4. humor 5. A believable world balanced on change between the Bloods and the Wits 6.It's whimsical But: it's still a #SteampunkNovel which isn't my reading jam & it's a bit too YA for me. 3 stars & another book off my #popsugarchalllenge ❣️❣️❣️#FridayFlowers

Cinfhen And it's also the first in a series...which I will not be continuing 😜 (edited) 7y
Cathythoughts Well done & dusted 👍 7y

TrishB Not for me! 7y
Cinfhen If you enjoy #steampunk I think this was actually a good one @TrishB @LauraBeth @Cathythoughts 7y
TrishB Can I be honest and say I don't really know what that means? ( and then feel really old for saying it!). 7y
LauraBeth @Cinfhen I can't think of anything I enjoy less than steampunk! 7y
julesG You're likes plus you're buts make it a stack-add for me. 7y
Cinfhen ? @TrishB I had to Google #Steampunk myself...Urban Dictionary states "Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes." 7y
Cinfhen Yay! I'm glad @julesG and it's a free download from IBooks 7y
Cinfhen Basically it's back to the Industrial Revolution with kickass ladies @trishb 7y
julesG I might still have an i-Something account. Off to check. 7y
julesG Free on Kindle, too. But the paperback is €12 😵 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Beautiful pic 😘 7y
TrishB @Cinfhen I love your second definition 😂😂 7y
DarcysMom @julesG Thanks for the heads up - I just downloaded it. 😁 7y
LibrarianRyan @TrishB Steampunk gets it name and comes from a world where things are still steamed powered. As if Electricity as we know it doesn't exist the way it does now. Zeppelins are still a personable mode of transportation as well as any sky ship. Heavy into engineering and math alchemy is still a legit science and so forth. Victorian. If you would like some suggestions to try I would be happy to help. I not only love steam punk, I used to LARP. 7y
TrishB I just had to look up LARP 😀 what's the number 1 you would recommend? 7y
Cinfhen @LibrarianRyan look at comment by @TrishB she forgot to tag you... 7y
LibrarianRyan @TrishB for fun and not too crazy I would recommend a teen series called If you would prefer and adult books her parasol protectorate is also great. In this Steam world vampires and wear wolves exist. Plus the author is on Litsy. 7y
Cinfhen And your definition is perfect @LibrarianRyan 🙌🏻 7y
LibrarianRyan @TrishB the book is great but the movie is awesome!! 7y
RaimeyGallant Nice review. I have yet to try reading steampunk. 7y
TrishB @LibrarianRyan have stacked 👍😀 thanks 7y
pri_bibliophile Nice review!! 7y
Cinfhen Thanks @RaimeyGallant @pri_bibliophile If you want to give steampunk a go, I'd take @LibrarianRyan recommendation... haven't read it but I've seen that series referenced on many lists! 7y

@BookishMarginalia

Fun steampunk YA coming of age with a brainy, plucky and unconventional female lead. If you secretly wanted Velma to get her due from the Scooby Doo gang, this is your kind of heroine. A free Kindle book so I had low expectations, but am reminded not to judge a book by its cover. Surprisingly good and recommended.

I wasn't expecting much because the ebook was free on Kindle and adding the Audible version only cost $1.99.

It was fantastic! Lesson learned, don't judge a book by its price! Well written, and entertaining! I enjoyed the entire cast of characters and Claire, the MC is wonderful! I can't wait to read her next adventure!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Don't judge a book by its cover!!!! I am addicted to this series of books by Shelley Adina. It's steam punk meets Victorian Britain meets Charles Dickens with a great set of main characters and no corny romance yucky plot. Instead our main character is a lady of capability...
