Fortunately, the Milk...
Fortunately, the Milk... | Neil Gaiman
123 posts | 281 read | 85 to read
You know what it's like when your mum goes away on a business trip and Dad's in charge. She leaves a really, really long list of what he's got to do. And the most important thing is DON'T FORGET TO GET THE MILK. Unfortunately, Dad forgets. So the next morning, before breakfast, he has to go to the corner shop, and this is the story of why it takes him a very, very long time to get back. Featuring: Professor Steg (a time-travelling dinosaur), some green globby things, the Queen of the Pirates, the famed jewel that is the Eye of Splod, some wumpires, and a perfectly normal but very important carton of milk. The award-laden, bestselling Neil Gaiman, author of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Stardust, Neverwhere, The Graveyard Book and Coraline, brings his biggest ever publishing year to a spectacular conclusion with this gloriously entertaining novel about time-travel, dinosaurs, milk and dads.

My third and final day of my short story marathon, andI‘m officially 15 books ahead of schedule and 16 books to make my reading goal for the year. This weekend has been a lot of fun and I found a lot of great stories in doing this. COMPLETELY RECOMMEND doing a short story marathon. You never know what you might find.

I have no chill right now. It‘s impossible to overstate how important Fortunately, the Milk is to me. It‘s by my fav Neil Gaiman—a great read aloud, & a fabulous celebration of imagination & storytelling. It‘s how I discovered Skottie Young, his art & his comics, & then the wider world of comics. Last week, for the first time, Skottie sold some of his original art for the book & I was fortunate enough to get a page. I absolutely love it. ❤️❤️❤️

ravenlee That‘s so cool! Congratulations! 2y

Gaiman said he wanted to write a book where the dad is fabulous after the way he portrayed the father in The Graveyard Book.
This was a great read. Super quick. I loved the story the father told to turn a grocery run for milk into an adventure.

PICK!

I gave my wife the choice between this or Willodeen to read with our 9-year-old and she scooped this one up. So, before I make a library run tomorrow to return ‘em both, I had to read this for myself.

Super goofy, fun story about a dad who goes through a lot of trouble to get his daughters some milk for breakfast — I can definitely relate. 😅

The illustrations are pretty cool too!

This was a quick read and a really cute story for kids, about a dad going out for milk and having to deal with aliens, pirates, angry gods, time travel, and vampires, to get back to his kids with the milk for breakfast. Cute illustrations, too.

This was a delightful little listen whilst puttering about the yard. It was on the available list on Libby, so I gave it a go. I‘m always a sucker for Neil Gaiman reading his own work.

Ncostell I am going to look for this now on Libby as I loved listening to him read The Ocean at the End of the Lane. He has such a great voice. 4y
GingerAntics I adored this audiobook. Gaiman reading his own work is always perfection. 4y

A fun book to read aloud with your kids. Dad goes out for a bottle of milk and takes a long time coming back. When he does return, he has an unbelievable story to explain why he was gone so long. Lots of fun with great illustrations as well! ❤️

I had no idea until I got this from the library that it‘s illustrated by Skottie Young of I Hate Fairyland. The drawings are wonderful, and remind me of some of Roald Dahl‘s illustrations.

This is a great Middle Grade story, told by a Dad in explanation of why it took him so long to go out and buy milk. You never know what sorts of trouble can befall you when you run to the corner store!

tjwill Interesting. The edition I have is illustrated by Chris Riddell. I didn‘t know there were different versions! 5y

A father went out to buy some milk and a whole lot of weird stuff happen that caused his delay...fortunately the milk saves the day. Gaiman, with his wit and imagination pulled off such a fun story. It‘s bonkers and funny. I got this when my kid was 7 years old and she loved it. Riddell‘s illustrations bring the book to life and the father in the story resembles the author!

It‘s been a quiet few days for me on Litsy because we‘ve been at C2E2, Chicago‘s version of Comic Con. Super fun & the highlight every year is seeing Skottie Young. I first came across his work in Gaiman‘s Fortunately, The Milk. From there...I Hate Fairyland, Bully Wars, Deadpool, & Middlewest. (And the wider, very cool world of comics generally.) Got a lot of comics signed & even came home with an original sketch (a self portrait) this year. 😍

I decided to listen to another kid's chapter book while I #audioclean in preparation for the little one. This was a fun, little, one-hour romp from one wild scenario to the next. Great for kids or adults! And it all starts when the dad goes down to the corner store for some milk...
