I expected a sweet & sentimental Christmas tale with moral lessons, all tied up with a neat & tidy ending like a present. That's exactly what this was. In all likelihood this was written when Alcott needed to make some fast money & it reads like it. The ghost was very disappointing in its utter charmlessness. Neither scary nor memorable 🙃 But the intrigue of hidden passion & secrets was fun enough for a fluffy seasonal read. 👻🎄💘 #serialreader

LeahBergen After reading the bio of Louisa and her mother I sure felt empathy for her situation. She had to crank out so many of these “blood and thunder” tales (under a pseudonym) just to support the family. I was shocked at what a deadbeat her father actually was in regards to bringing in money. He hardly contributed a cent throughout his entire life. 😮 6y
batsy @LeahBergen I only vaguely know about her life so this is great, thank you. I'll add it to my list! This is another one I've got my eye on—you might have heard about it 6y
rubyslippersreads Sounds like something Professor Bhaer would disapprove of. 😉 6y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I need to read that one, though I already have no use for Bronson Alcott. 😠 6y
kspenmoll @rubyslippersreads Bronson was a failure financially & apparently his writing was incoherent but his educational methods were way ahead of his time & thus he lost job after job because he would not use conventional methods. That is to be admired but he left his family with no income. He also shepherded the transcendental movement, was an early abolitionist, & close friend to Hawthorne & Emerson. (edited) 6y
kspenmoll @rubyslippersreads Continued: Thoreau‘s book Civil Disobedience was inspired by Alcott. This does not make him any where near a good husband or father; clearly his family was on their own or at the whim of his ideas. As an idealist & impractical man, he never should have married; he basically acted as though he was single without regard to how his actions affected his family. So yes, he was useless! 6y
rubyslippersreads @kspenmoll Exactly right; he never should have taken on the responsibility of a family (although we wouldn‘t have Little Women if he hadn‘t.) 6y
batsy @rubyslippersreads Ha, yes! 😆 6y
Centique @LeahBergen @batsy I have the second one on my list but not the one you mentioned Leah. Thanks 😊 I had read quite a lot about Bronson before I dnf‘ed that other Louisa bio. It was actually more about Bronson than her. What I read did blow my mind. They were close to starving at times on that farm. 🤯 6y
Centique @batsy @LeahBergen and I listened to the Book Cougars discuss the Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy book with the author on their podcast - you might like that too. 6y
batsy @Centique Thanks, will check it out :) 6y

I finished my first book of 2018! I read this 88-page book over a few days on the computer at work. This was a Christmas ghost story that takes place in the week between Christmas and NYE. A group of family and friends is gathered and there are various dramas. There‘s two men wanting the same girl, a unhappily married woman, and a ghost! I liked it ok, but I didn‘t find it memorable. I did have to start and stop a lot during my reading though.

This was such a fun little story! Intrigue, plots, secrets, forbidden love, unrequited love, a ghost, and everything tied up in a neat little happy Christmas bow at the end! I enjoyed the building suspense and plots, and I loved the too-neat wrap-up. It was all so tidy and happy! I can see why it might disappoint others though. A great Christmas read! #spirited #serialreader #readalong

Well, that was an abrupt ending! I enjoyed this all the same... the little intrigues and gradually-revealed backstories were fun, even if the ending wrapped it all up a bit too swiftly. I missed the #spirited readalong, since I let the issues pile up and then ended up bingeing over the past couple days. I'm glad I came across it, though--it was a fun read.

My first read on Serial Reader. Thank you @Litsy While it was an entertaining experience, this tale seemed to be abridged to me. Somewhat disjointed. It did remind me a bit of Shirley Jackson's, The Haunting of Hill House. Interesting characters. The woman on this cover must be the beautiful temptress, Mrs. Snowden. Ready to join the next group! #spirited

And so the #spirited readalong ends for me. This was an odd little tale with more twists than expected, and maybe a little less involving ghosts than I would have hoped. I did enjoy the writing, and the story was quite good though it was certainly on the rushed side of things.

A slightly less #spirited read than the title might lead one to believe. I knew there was a twist and it was close to what I was expecting. It did seem to wrap up a little too quickly, and perhaps a little too neatly. A good moral for the holiday season, though. This was a good choice for a read along, and I'm glad we chose it.

Theresa I love Serial Reader & the Readalongs we've done, but with each I've gone thru days where I think the story is so good & others whet I think it's just okay or worse. I wonder how I'd feel if I read the same story as I would others, stopping & starting whet I choose rather than at some point defined by someone else. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Theresa I think that a lot of us would enjoy the stories more because it seems like we're stopping just as the story hits its stride. Of course, just because we're reading along doesn't mean someone can't read ahead. Some of these stories I probably wouldn't read on my own so I'm enjoying getting to do this with other people. 8y
Theresa I agree. During readalongs I hold myself back from reading ahead a lot more than I do when I'm reading on my own. Or I'll intentionally skip a few days so that I have multiple issues & can play catch up. 😆 Every Serial Reader I've done so far is something I wouldn't have picked up if not for the app. 8y

Three cheers for sweet survival! I probably would've tossed this if it wasn't a readalong - but I'm kind of glad I didn't. The story in and of itself wasn't much different from most other gothic literature, and the entire ghost-thing was a bit bleh, but I came to enjoy a few of a the characters, so. Yes. #spirited

Now that we've finished the #spirited readalong I must admit, I felt the story ending rushed. I felt like this was an early LMA effort, and it was published before Little Women, so I feel correct lol. It sort of meandered along for most of the plot, then everything happened at the end. The ghost only appeared at the end, for crying out loud! Overall, I'm happy I read it, but it probably won't be a seasonal tradition for me.

Annl @Pinkmeghan I completely agree. 8y
Pinkmeghan @Annl I saw someone post on this readalong that LMA published this to get $$ for her family, so props to that, it's very Jo March of her! 💜 I just know she's written better stuff! It's decent, just not my fave. 😂 8y

A moral tale. Common themes of preserving honor and purity of character are behind (and guide) the story of an English country Christmas. The incarnation of the themes, especially in conversations between the characters, is a bit over the top.

This story is full of secrets and drama, but it all works out with a "do what is right" message in the end. I enjoyed it more for the author's sake than the story itself. I appreciate the variety of Louisa May Alcott's work and her life of working to support her family through her writing.

#Spirited #SerialReader #readalong

rockpools Nicely put, and I agree totally. I'm more interested in her as an author now, but won't be missing any of these characters. 8y
Reviewsbylola The story started to lose a little bit of steam for me as it went on, but overall I enjoyed it. 8y
Daisey @RachelO I have read a lot of her work, as well as biographies, and always appreciate her stories. However, I do tend to like the classic well known family stories the best. Most of her more gothic stories have not stuck with me, except for A Long Fatal Love Chase. 8y
Daisey @Reviewsbylola I think going into the separate ghost stories pulls the reader's attention from the main plot line and, especially in serial form, slows it down somewhat. 8y

Well... I read this as part of the #spirited readalong, and actually warmed to it more having read a little about LM Alcott. (She needed the money. Fair play).

Friends and relations gather in a country house for Christmas. Some people obviously know more about some things than they're letting on. Secrets and ghost stories ensue.

By the end I wanted to read ahead. But as a group of characters, I was more than happy to leave them all behind.

tpixie I got behind. Am curious about the end but not in love with these characters ( or the ones in Agnus Grey- Anne Bronte) 8y
rockpools @tpixie Hm. Don't think I've read Agnus Grey - won't rush to read it right now! This is the first SerialReader I've kept up with - the readalong definitely helped as I didn't want to hit spoilers. Glad I finished it, but a bit uneven overall. 8y

rockpools @tpixie sounds really interesting, but tricky if you're not into Gothic. The Madwoman Upstairs sounds like a fascinating idea - is this an in-person book club? 8y
tpixie Yes- I had a great book club – cocktail book club- at a bookstore ,but it just ended now that she's opened up a café it's just too much for her. So I joined another one but now since it's not associated with the book store you've got to host 2 a year at my house and I'm not excited about that! But I did think this madwoman book looked interesting. - even if I don't like Gothic romance! 8y

Hey guys! We're almost done with #Spirited, so...can we do it again? I think the @SerialReader app would be perfect for a read-along during the hectic holidays. What do people want to read? What about Edith Nesbit's The Book of Dragons (17 issues)? Or The Jungle Book (24 issues)? Or The Call of the Wild (15 issues)? These are just some titles that sounded good to me, but I'd be up for anything!

(Quote tile in pic from JustChuggingAlong on Etsy!)

Theresa To add to the suggestions - the next in the Sherlock series 8y
Theresa I forgot to say that I am definitely interested in doing it again. I plan to read The Jungle Book for 1 of the challenges I'll be doing in 2017. 8y

LectricSheep @Theresa awesome! Okay so we shouldn't read the Jungle Book then, right? I've read The Sign of the Four, and it's very good! No opposition to reading it again. @Faibka of course! 😁more people reading = more fun! 8y

jpmcwisemorgan No but that's how life was then. It's not really that long that women have been able to do a lot of things without the permission of a father/husband/male guardian.
