Rest in Power
Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin | Sybrina Fulton, Tracy Martin
Trayvon Martins parents take readers beyond the news cycle with an account only they could give: the intimate story of a tragically foreshortened life and the rise of a movement. On a February evening in 2012, in a small town in central Florida, seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was walking home with candy and a can of juice in hand and talking on the phone with a friend when a fatal encounter with a gun-wielding neighborhood watchman ended his young life. The watchman was briefly detained by the police and released. Trayvons fathera truck driver named Tracytried to get answers from the police but was shut down and ignored. Trayvons mother, a civil servant for the city of Miami, was paralyzed by the news of her sons death and lost in mourning, unable to leave her room for days. But in a matter of weeks, their sons name would be spoken by President Obama, honored by professional athletes, and passionately discussed all over traditional and social media. And at the head of a growing nationwide campaign for justice were Trayvons parents, whodriven by their intense love for their lost sondiscovered their voices, gathered allies, and launched a movement that would change the country. Five years after his tragic death, Travyon Martins name is still evoked every day. He has become a symbol of social justice activism, as has his hauntingly familiar image: the photo of a child still in the process of becoming a young man, wearing a hoodie and gazing silently at the camera. But who was Trayvon Martin, before he became, in death, an icon? And how did one black childs death on a dark, rainy street in a small Florida town become the match that lit a civil rights crusade? Rest in Power, told through the compelling alternating narratives of Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, answers, for the first time, those questions from the most intimate of sources. Its the story of the beautiful and complex child they lost, the cruel unresponsiveness of the police and the hostility of the legal system, and the inspiring journey they took from grief and pain to power, and from tragedy and senselessness to meaning.

Such a heartbreaking book written by Trayvon‘s parents. They both chronicle their experiences of what happened leading up to & the days after he was shot. Which was a bit slow to read since it was hard to read about their loss & grief. The last half of the book was about the movement & the trial, which was frustrating to read. Trayvon Martin‘s murder continues to highlight the racial injustice in the court systems as well as the daily inequities

ncsufoxes large number of black & brown people face on a daily basis. #bookspin. #nonfiction2022 prompt: I‘m an angel #booked2022 prompt: adapted for the small screen 2y
Cinfhen Great review! Sounds like a difficult but important book. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I got a lot out of this emotional read too, we still do not value life in this country the way we should…and recent events have made it even sadder to me because not only do Black Lives Matter, but with the recent school shootings I swear some don‘t think children‘s lives matter either. And as much as the system in this case wanted to portray him as a troublemaker or “thug” He was just a child, literally waking to the corner store for a snack. 2y

What a powerful read so far. I‘ve been trying to read this book for months but I haven‘t been able to get past the first chapter without crying. My heart really goes out to this family and the entire black lives matter cause. This is absolutely an essential read especially during the current state of the world. Finally made it to the halfway point

Reading this story, written by his parents, in their own words, with their first person recollections of events, from when they first heard the news through the trial itself, you can't help but acutely feel the injustice of this all over again. It is a heartbreaking read, and I keep putting it down because it pulls no punches, it walks you through what they said and heard as they accepted this horrible event and tried to move forward... (continued)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... through it. But even as I put it down, because it was just too hard to read after yet another shooting or unnecessary death, I also kept going back to it & felt encouraged remembering where this movement really began, how important it is, & why some seem determined to re-label groups like Black Lives Matter as “terrorist” groups or football players taking the knee as “anti-American” for their own partisan reasons while ignoring the real reason 7y

My first month of my new (coloring book) Book Journal with multiple read alongs I was keeping track of...and it‘s finished! And even more exciting for me, all on track except 1, I have to carry over Rest in Power (again). I‘ll try to put a push on that one and finish it out yet this month (I have a few days left) and I really need to stop dragging my feet with that sad, but necessary, read. Plus look for pens that don‘t bleed through the pages.😂

Gezemice This is so beautiful! So cool. I did not know there was a Blind Assassin buddy read, but I read it earlier this year and it totally floored me. I think I need to read it again. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Yes! I was a total fail at bullet journaling and craftiness, but I can color in the pre-printed pictures. Hopefully I‘ll keep up with this better too. 😉😂 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have a bullet-journal of sorts, although it is merely an adoption of some of the organization on a messy notebook (like page numbers and an index). I write in it occasionally... I would not say it was a resounding success. I hope you will keep yours up, I love the colors and patterns! 7y

We really are a disturbed people. 🙄

EchoLogical I want to read this but I don't know if I can handle this. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EchoLogical Most of it, after the initial shooting, is actually pretty uplifting...it‘s a lot about the fight for an arrest, but the upswellng of support from unexpected places that they received. What I like is that there is very little polish or spin, it‘s written by the mother and father and their recollections of what happened and what was said as they progressed through their fight for information and justice. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EchoLogical But even saying all that, I‘ve drug my feet reading it anyway. I‘ll read a few chapters and then put it down for a week, or for the next mass shooting, or senseless death that is just a little to close to this story (which sadly is often lately) and then after awhile goes by I have to remind myself to pick it back up again. 7y
See All 6 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EchoLogical Can you tell I instinctually wanted to do my best ‘read this book‘ pep talk, here‘s the silver lining of this horrible situation... but couldn‘t even manage that, it‘s still just so sad, there‘s no silver lining, because I know even after they finally get him arrested how it all turns out in the end.😞 7y
EchoLogical @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I understand. On one hand, I feel obligated to read this because their story should be known. It's like the least I can do is read about it after they're forced to live through it everyday but I feel sick when I think about the death of a child. I don't want to use the word "triggered" but I feel some kind of way. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EchoLogical that‘s it, I think you put your finger on it exactly. I feel obligated to read it, to finish their story, even though I know the whole story & how it all ends, I still feel like if they had to live through it, the least I can do is listen to their POV on all of it. I guess it‘s really the best any of us can do, whether we read the book or not, to remember. Because it is “triggering”, heart-wrenching, the reasoning behind it pointless 7y

This case and this book is still surreal on so many levels to me....

It's sad that this has to be a job, that there have to be media relations firms to help ordinary people get the help, attention, or justice that should have automatically been done.

And that to get things done, again that should have automatically occurred, you have to be willing to open yourself up to be publicly raked across the coals to get people to do their jobs.

😢 This from the lawyer they called who originally turned down the case, because he was positive it wasn't a case....that they didn't need a lawyer to find out what happened that night or to get justice for their son. Little did he realize. They were already fighting just to get to see their son's body, identify it, and get it released to them...such bizarre and basic things they had to fight for.

Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin are two of the strongest people I have ever read about. Ever. And my heart hurts for them with every page I read, especially knowing how loved Trayvon was, and his hopes and dreams. All taken away by someone who decided to shoot because a black kid in a hoodie was scary. Shatters me. Every single damn time.

ptkpepe98 I remember the documentary, which I saw while vacationing in Orlando 3 mos after Zimmerman was acquitted. On the way there, we stopped in Sanford for gas. None of the other 8 adults recognized the name of the town. I was amazed by that, especially since three of them, like me, are educators and considered themselves well-informed and liberal. I am still angry Z. was acquitted, and have the highest respect for Trayvon Martin's parents. 7y

I don't have the proper words to express how important and effective this book is. Trayvon and everything he now stands for is someone who changed my life, truly, and I'm so happy his parents have done so much to push for change. This book is infuriating, motivational, and absolutely necessary. "We will define his legacy."

"How can I show you the hole in my heart? How do I write about the death of my son?"-Sybrina Fulton. No mother should ever have to but she and Tracy Martin do just in this book by telling us about the days following their son Trayvon's death and the trial of his killer. This is a heart wrenching read made worse by knowing the outcome of their fight for justice.
