Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming: A Christmas Story
Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming: A Christmas Story | Lemony Snicket
13 posts | 18 read | 11 to read
Latkes are potato pancakes served at Hanukkah, and Lemony Snicket is an alleged children s author. For the first time in literary history, these two elements are combined in one book. A particularly irate latke is the star of The Latke Who Couldn t Stop Screaming, but many other holiday icons appear and even speak: flashing colored lights, cane-shaped candy, a pine tree. Santa Claus is briefly discussed as well. The ending is happy, at least for some. People who are interested in any or all of these things will find this book so enjoyable it will feel as though Hanukkah were being celebrated for several years, rather than eight nights."

Humorous story about an exasperated latke, written in a way only Snicket can 😄

CogsOfEncouragement It is a very fun book. I borrowed it from the library a few Decembers in a row when my kids were young. 2y

This is the perfect book for anyone of any age who is exhausted from having to explain that Hanukkah is an entirely separate tradition from Christmas and isn't just "Jewish Christmas." Genuinely funny, especially if you enjoy the Lemony Snicket brand of humour. Also educational for those coming from a place of limited familiarity with Hanukkah origins and traditions. A fun read all around, and one I would recommend.

Home from the big family Hannukah party, read this irreverent book to my nieces and now it's time for bed! 🕎

Funny and clever. Cracked me and my kids up with the poor latke being mistaken for hash browns and having to explain that Santa has nothing to do with Hanukkah.

My favorite of all our #christmassyreads is actually a Hanukkah book. In our household, audience participation (i.e., screaming with the latke) is a big part of the fun of this book. (On a totally different note, my real tree looks so fake in this picture that I am now reconsidering my longstanding opposition to artificial Christmas trees.)

saresmoore Don't reconsider! The smell and feel of a real tree makes it so worth it. 8y

I read this one every year. It's great fun and it's not often one sees a story revolving around a latke. As soon as I read it I start looking forward to Chanukah and the huge pile of latkes I'll be consuming.
