True Grit
True Grit | Charlie Portis
17 posts | 34 read | 30 to read

I just love the tone of Mattie's narration... I have seen the Coen Brothers movie (not the John Wayne) and delighted in the speech, so thought I should give the book a shot.

Donna Tartt as the narrator for this is 💯! I‘m so excited by this surprise

Wife I totally agree. Maybe my favorite audiobook of all time!❤️ 7y
prowlix @Wife I‘m also really excited to get to the essay she wrote at the end! I‘m just surprised she is doing the accents so well 7y

A great story, perhaps not ideal as an audiobook because of all the “he/she said”, but enjoyable nonetheless. Mattie is a kickass character!

britt_brooke I enjoyed the audio version but that is a valid point. When there was a lot of back and forth, it was a bit awkward. 7y
Wife I actually really liked this unique writing style in audiobook. One of my all time favorites. 7y
AlaMich This is on my list for #readharder2018 for the western. I really think I have never read even one western. I tried Lonesome Dove a loooonnng time ago but couldn‘t get into it and so DNFed it. 7y
Cinfhen Glad you gave it a try! 7y

Is sewing lingerie while listening to this weird? I‘m not sure I like Tartt as a narrator, she makes such weird pauses...

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Cute! And not weird at all, a bunch of people here seem to like audiobooks while doing crafty things. For me it‘s audiobooks and coloring. 7y
SandyW Hubby and I are bingeing "Orange is the New Black." So of course my mind has you in prison! (This won't make any sense of you haven't watched the series.) 7y
UrsulaMonarch @SandyW I was thinking the same! ☺️ 7y

tricours @SandyW I‘ve only seen a couple of episodes, I couldn‘t stand the main character! 7y
GypsyKat @SandyW Haha! 😂 7y
SandyW @UrsulaMonarch @GypsyKat at least I'm not the only one! 😳 7y
SandyW @tricours I don't like her much either, and she's becoming even less sympathetic as the story continues. We're in season 4 and I could be done honestly, but I make hubby watch my stuff... 7y
UrsulaMonarch @SandyW @tricours - I agree but I like how the main character becomes progressively less central & the show becomes more about the supporting characters (to be at least). 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Im just impressed that you sew!! 7y

I forgot to do this for ages ...

'People do not give it credence that a fourteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father's blood but it did not seem so strange then, although I will say it did not happen every day.' And then the murders began.

Quick and enjoyable read! I loved Mattie and how matter of fact and bold she was. I saw the newer remake movie not too long ago, but I'll need to watch the original now.

This has been laying around my house for ages (not sure where it came from). I finally read I because it fit a reading challenge and, surprisingly I enjoyed it. Mattie is a wonderful character.

A galaxy of stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 100% worth every single minute. There has been a hole in my literary heart and his name is Charles Portis. And there has been a voice missing from my head and her name is Mattie Ross. Going to go buy everything this man has written.

BookDude Read Tom Franklin as well! 8y
Kristio Umm yes! The Tilted World = ❤️❤️ 8y
LauraBeth @BookDude and @Kristio - I'll definitely check out Tom Franklin - thanks 😀 8y
AlaMich I had never heard of him either until I read someone's comment (can't remember where) about the audio version of Norwood and how great it was. I haven't gotten around to it yet but it sounds awesome. 8y

Hear @Liberty on @DrunkBooksellers say one of the best living writers is Charles Portis ✅
Ponder why I've never read Portis ✅
Ponder why I don't recall the 2010 movie remake of True Grit and realize I was working 60 hr/week, coaching and marathon training - valid reasons for missing it ✅
Google Portis and rethink the Donna Tartt books I've read ✅http://mobile.nytimes.com/2010/12/20/books/20portis.html
Go to library - check out Portis ✅

rubyslippersreads I still have the copy of this I got for Christmas as a kid. Might be time for a reread. 8y
awishman The old version with John Wayne is one of my guilty pleasure movies. 8y
LauraBeth @rubyslippersreads looks like it's slim enough to read in an evening 😀 8y

LauraBeth @awishman I'm going to read it and then watch the John Wayne version 😀 8y
rubyslippersreads @LauraBeth I think it would be. I know I read it quite a few times. 8y
rubyslippersreads @awishman I love that movie too. I haven't watched the new version. 8y
B.Reader I haven't read the book either, even though I see it frequently on my shelf and have the best of intentions! 8y
awishman @rubyslippersreads @LauraBeth The John Wayne version is on Netflix at the moment 😉 8y
LeahBergen I loved the book (and prefer the newer movie 😬) 8y
LauraBeth Awesome @awishman! I think I'll watch both the original and the remake @LeahBergen after reading the book 😀 8y
vivastory I totally agree with @Liberty Portis deserves to be as widely known as Vonnegut IMHO 8y
mllemay Great book! And agree with @LeahBergen the new movie is really good. It's one of the best adaptations I've ever seen. 8y
LauraBrook An excellent idea - Liberty always reminds me of the hundreds of awesome books I'm missing! Kisses to Bitsy! 😘 8y
quietjenn I just "discovered" Portis this year, too and am walking the fine line between wanting to devour them all and draw them out, as there are so few of them. 8y
Larkken I'm curious - does it make you pro or con Donna Tartt? 8y
LauraBeth @Larkken I love Donna Tartt - and now that I'm aware of the Portis influence on her - I'd like to definitely re-read through a new prism (after I've read all of Portis 😀) 8y
LauraBeth @quietjenn sometimes I'm in awe of how little I know about great literature 😀 and I studied a LOT of it in college... 8y
LauraBeth @LauraBrook I know, right? Awww - Bitsy loves kisses 🐶💕 8y
LauraBeth @mllemay I can't wait to see it now 😀 8y
LauraBeth @vivastory I always appreciate when someone shares a writer they love so that I can go off and discover them as well 😀 (edited) 8y
Blueberry Love this book. I like both movies but the newest one best. 8y
Sydsavvy The best. Better with each re-read. 8y
Cinfhen I just read this book for my #birthdayChallenge 🤓It was excellent! I LOVED the deadpan delivery of young Mattie, the 14 year old narrator 😍She was all sorts of awesomeness 👒👢🦄 8y
