Darkest Fear
Darkest Fear: A Myron Bolitar Novel | Harlan Coben
7 posts | 24 read | 9 to read
Edgar Award-winner Harlan Coben brings us his most astonishingand deeply personalnovel yet. And it all begins when Myron Bolitar's ex tells him he's a father ... of a dying thirteen-year-old boy. Myron never saw it coming. A surprise visit from an ex-girlfriend is unsettling enough. But Emily Downing's news brings him to his knees. Her son Jeremy is dying and needs a bone-marrow transplantfrom a donor who has vanished without a trace. Then comes the real shocker: The boy is Myron's son, conceived the night before her wedding to another man. Staggered by the news, Myron plunges into a search for the missing donor. But finding him means cracking open a dark mystery that involves a broken family, a brutal kidnapping spree, and the FBI. Somewhere in the sordid mess is the donor who disappeared. And as doubts emerge about Jeremy's true paternity, a child vanishes, igniting a chain reaction of heartbreaking truth and chilling revelation. From the Paperback edition.

I thought this was the most straightforward Coben thriller, until the last 25% and then I got whiplash with all the twists.
Good to be back with Myron, Win and Esperanza 😁

I will be so glad when this word disappears from every day conversation in books (and anywhere else!).

Lindy I just finished reading a book that has me thinking about ableist language: 3y
squirrelbrain 😡 That‘s the word that Lizzo had to change isn‘t it? 3y
TrishB @Lindy that sounds interesting- I‘ll keep an eye out for your review. 3y

TrishB @squirrelbrain yes- aside from the fact that she used it, I thought she handled it really well and immediately addressed the backlash. But in 2022 why are people still using it? This book was published 2000, but the Lizzo example shows we haven‘t made a lot of progress yet. 3y
AmyG That‘s from childhood. People still use it? 3y
BarbaraBB It‘s a horrible word indeed. 3y
julesG 🤬 I'm pretty sure the German equivalent is still in use, mainly by the older generations, too. 3y
BookBr 😒 3y
Cathythoughts Hate that word 👍🏻 3y
squirrelbrain I agree, she immediately held her hands up and apologised, and it did sound like a genuine heartfelt apology. 3y
TrishB @AmyG I always think that- but it‘s still out there. 3y

I discovered Harlan Coben after a reviewer on GR commented on another book that that book wasn't as good as the Myron Bolitar series. The library just happened to have the first 7 books in one Kindle download, which fed my reading addiction super well.

The first one was good and they got better with each one. The 7th, Darkest Fear, was quite good and had me hooked until the very end.

This was an easy prompt for me. I was lucky enough to meet Harlan Coben in the mid 90's. He liked my name, and later used it in a couple of his books, Darkest Fear and Live Wire. I am still amazed when I open one up and see my name! #characterwhosharesyourname #riotgrams

At least 20 of my friends are at Bouchercon in NOLA this week. Wish I had the extra $ to go, but I love all their posts. (I picked this book because I'm a character in it LOL)

[DELETED] 2232195534 I wish I was there too. Should have gone. Next year in Toronto? 8y
Suzze @kaysreadinglife don't know why I just saw your reply. I don't think I'll make Toronto. Last time it was in Toronto I went and it cost me way too much. Maybe the year after in St. Petersburg and tie it into a visit to my sister who lives just north of Tampa. 8y
