Green Mile: The Complete Serial Novel
Green Mile: The Complete Serial Novel | Stephen King
The #1 New York Times bestselling dramatic serial novel and inspiration for the Oscar-nominated film of the same name starring Tom Hanks, the literary event (Entertainment Weekly) of The Green Mile is now available in its entirety. When The Green Mile first appeared, serialized as one volume per month, Stephen King s The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times bestseller list simultaneously and delighted millions of fans the world over. Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with Old Sparky, Cold Mountain s electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he s never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours."

Audiobook. I‘ve seen the movie end multiple times - never whole thing. Just like the movie, I cried a few times. The written story here went off on different tandems that made it drag on a lot, to me. surprised a few times, hand over mouth freeze, moments. This book reminds that life isn‘t fair, even those whom done no bad and those who do good. That stinks, but that is life some times. I knew the ending and still wanted a different end.

This is probably one of my favorites by Stephen King. Some of the scenes in this book will stick in my head for the rest of my life and haunt me. This was such an excellent book and so underrated. I remember watching the movie when it came out and reading the book years ago but I am glad I revisited and read it again to remind myself of the story. Definitely one of my top favorites by him.

TieDyeDude This may have been the first King book I read. My mom had the original 6 volumes (which I stole when I moved out and still have), which made it a little less intimidating. 8mo
Victoriahoperose @TieDyeDude absolutely!! I completely agree. 8mo
ElizaMarie One of my favorites! How was the audio? I had read it in the original monthly novellas. But.. this is one I want to revisit. 8mo

Victoriahoperose @ElizaMarie absolutely 💯💯💯 recommend the audio. I felt like I was totally in it again. It was excellent. Highly recommend. 8mo
RaeLovesToRead Haven't read the book, but there is a scene in the film that was so powerfully upsetting that I can't watch it again 8mo
Victoriahoperose @RaeLovesToRead yes. That was hard and it‘s crazy because I was reading it and forgot about that part and then when it happened I felt so uneasy and upset by it, not gonna lie. It definitely got to me. Super disturbing. I didn‘t realize how much I forgot about until I was rereading it!! (edited) 8mo

I did a Stephen King per month last year (although I got delayed and finished up in January).
Favourite: The Green Mile. Probably followed by Different Seasons.
Least favourite: If it Bleeds. I didn't dislike it, but it was the weakest and least memorable of the bunch.

BarkingMadRead Green Mile is so so good! 10mo
Leniverse @BarkingMadRead Definitely! I'm not putting together a Best of 2023 list, but if I did Green Mile would be on it. 10mo
BarkingMadRead I originally read it when it was coming out serial style. So obnoxious having to wait to read each installment 🤣 10mo
See All 7 Comments
Leniverse @BarkingMadRead I actually paced myself, to get the serial experience 😂 I waited, not a full week because I was only supposed to spend a month on it, but a few days between each section. 10mo
BarkingMadRead That‘s amazing! 10mo
Leniverse @BarkingMadRead To be fair, I have seen the movie, years ago, so I pretty much knew what was coming. Otherwise I don't think I'd have managed to wait. 10mo

Hi Daria @dariazeoli ! I'm looking forward to going through your list for #auldlangspine (we'd only doubled up on The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo), so I'm excited to get started with these 5, which I already own.

I'm a bit wary of the tagged, however, as I don't read horror/King in general. Is there body/medical/hospital gore in it (or, in particular, eye surgery)? It's the one part of my body that I'm squeamish about & would rather not read.

dariazeoli It‘s so weird: I cannot watch gore but I can read it! I think I have to steer you away from The Green Mile based on the fact that it takes place on death row and with an electric chair. While there isn‘t eye surgery, there is some eye gore that probably wouldn‘t be fun for you! (Not that it can be called “fun,” but you know what I mean 😬). I‘ve already started stalking Libby to see what I can borrow in 2024 from your list! Will post soon. 11mo

dariazeoli @Chelsea.Poole I read this one early on 2023 but I was impressed with Evanna Lynch‘s writing. I‘m glad she‘s recovered from her ED as it is a difficult illness to live with, as I understand 11mo
jenniferw88 @dariazeoli thank you, I'll remove that then! Because of my medical history, it's the one part I'm squeamish about (it doesn't help that I'm needle phobic!) 11mo
jenniferw88 @dariazeoli I'll give you a warning - I found The Real Global Warming Disaster in a charity shop, so it may be a bit difficult to get hold of! 11mo

I've never watched the film all the way through but this book captivated me, I could barely put it down.

John Coffey, like the drink but spelt differently, you may be fictional but to me, you are a legend.

I cried reading this, as always King reels both you mind and heart into his stories.

MonicaLoves2Read Loved the movie, but never read the book. 1y

There's not much new to say about this book. It's incredible; everyone knows it. What I always reflect on when I read it is how hard the world is. We take the beautiful, special things we find - like John Coffey - and we grind them up in the sharp, cruel teeth of the world's ugliness and hate and spit them out. I will never not feel a deep sadness when finishing this book, nor a stronger urge to go out and preserve some goodness in the world. 5/5

Wow.
I have put off reading this book for years. I worried it would ruin the film for me, it is my all time favourite movie. I can honestly say that Frank Darabont does the most beautiful Stephen King adaptations (Shawshank Redemption)
There are few fictional characters that touch your heart and stay with you quite like John Coffey.
I challenge anyone to read this and not cry. The film too, Michael Clarke Duncan not receiving an Oscar is criminal.

Stephen King dà il meglio di sé in questo romanzo, che combina l'abituale crudezza con una certa delicatezza nel parlare di esseri umani. Il tema principale è la malvagità umana, coniugata nei modi più inaspettati. Recensione: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj2S3Awsrga/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

This book is dated and problematic. But it's also emotionally powerful and so compelling. It kept me up reading way past my bedtime on several nights, and that does not happen for me very often. One of King's best, I think.

I know he's probably not going to read them unless the power goes out. I know it's because he liked the movie and he has a massive collection fetish but he's 17 and reading has always been a struggle for him so I'm calling this a win!! Plus....it's King.

I completed my 2021 Goodreads goal of 45 books so I am happy with that 🙌 I read 34 physical books and 11 ebooks and I enjoyed all of them! My first read of 2021 was a reread of The Green Mile and my last read for the year was The Troop by Nick Cutter. My 2022 goals are to aim for 45 books again, go on a book buying ban for a few months and continue to read all the unread books on my shelves.

An absolutely fantastic book which I loved! It is definitely not for the faint hearted, and is sure to bring you to tears and make you smile at times. I liked the descriptions (even if some made me feel a bit ill at times) and the characters. I loved the writing style as it's being told as an actual story. I loved how this book makes you question right and wrong, good and evil, and does not back down when it comes to perspectives.

This is the story of Paul Edgecombe, superintendent in a state penitentiary at Cold Mountain populated with inmates sentenced to death in an electric chair (Old Sparky). This is about what happened in 1932 during the execution of John Coffey.
Great book! Novel with some supernatural elements expected in Mr. King‘s novels, it describes correctional operations, institutionalized staff behavior, injustice and social issues. 4.3⭐️
