Acqua Alta | Donna Leon

In Leon's fifth Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery, the beating of renowned art historian Dotoressa Brett Lynch draws the contemporary Venetian police detective out of his warm and loving home and into the yearly onslaught of acqua alta, the torrential winter rains. Brett, an American who spearheaded a recent exhibition of Chinese pottery in Venice, lives with her lover, Flavia Petrelli, the reigning diva of La Scala. With his open mind and good sense, Brunetti finds himself more fazed by Flavia's breathtaking talent than by the nontraditional relationship between the two women. Brunetti's deliberate and humane investigation to uncover a motive for Brett's beating takes him to dark, wet corners of Venice and into a sinister web of art theft, fakery and base human desires. Every fan s first-pick Brunetti novel. "The New Yorker" Music and art mingle delightfully with murder and mayhem in the course of this very engaging story. "Pittsburgh Post-Gazette" A subtle study of emotion and character A sophisticated mystery. "Library Journal""

A very good entry in this series. Brett, an American specialist in ancient ceramics, is beaten by two men to dissuade from discussing her discovery of fakes with a museum director. From there a tale of the underground world of art dealing and antiques unravels. I always appreciate the ambiguity of justice in this series and the way it explores corruption.

Brunetti is involved with murder and violence, while Venice goes through its Acqua Alta season. My appreciation for this series is growing - Leon‘s writing style can be flippant and satirical but also measured and very precise. Brunetti continues to work through “justice,” which does not always mean legal actions. #19822022 #1996

Lynnsoprano This was one of my favorites. I need to get back to this series. 2y
Librarybelle @Lynnsoprano I‘ve talked with other readers who have said this one is also one of their favorites! I could just envision all of the dampness and cold described from the Acqua Alta…so atmospheric! 2y

I so enjoy this series. In addition to the mystery, every book so far has taken on an important topic. This one is centered around art theft and the market for stolen art. The mystery was a little easier to solve this time, but how it was going to resolve stayed at issue until the end. The title refers to the high water that floods Venice; I thought a rainy day picture might be in order.

I decided to read a couple books from this series back to back, something I never do. And for the first time, I‘m participating in #24B4Monday #readathon. Usually my weekends are too busy to get much reading done, but things have changed 😊 My goal is to finish this, but even if I don‘t, or don‘t come close in time, it‘s fun to be able to get involved.

Andrew65 Great to have you with us, good luck with the Readathon. 😊👍 5y
Tera0707 Good luck! It‘s my first time too, and I know I won‘t be able to hit 24 hours, but like you said, it‘s just fun to be involved. And it‘s the excuse I tell my family when I want to sit and read: It‘s Readathon weekend! (I‘ve only ever done 24in48 Readathon) 5y
Clwojick Woohoo! I rarely read series back to back, but sometimes I just can‘t wait to find out what happens next. 5y

Straddling the line between wanting to be a minimalist but also being a bookworm who loves old “friends” is hard. Today I faced up to the fact that I‘ll probably never reread all my Donna Leons again though, even though I adore Commissario Guido Brunetti. I kept the first 4, just in case I ever do reread, and then got rid of all these pocketbooks + the 8 hardbacks I owned. Sniffle. 📚💜

PatienceFortitude Remember, that‘s what libraries are for! You can reread your favorites 6y

The water rises in Venice as winter rains pound the city, and Guido Brunetti pounds the pavement to solve a case of art theft turned deadly. This classic Donna Leon mystery makes perfect reading during rainstorms here in our City by the Bay.
