I happily devoured this fifth in the Midsomer Murders series on audio. The character studies in each of these novels is remarkable, and this addition is no exception. Barnaby and Troy come off as cantankerous and crass, respectively, and the mystery and murder are so twisted. Great listen! #192025 #1996 #52BookClub23 #RelatedToTheWordMurder

Bluebird I‘ve been eyeing this series for awhile. I really must get to it soon! 2y

Acqua Alta | Donna Leon

Brunetti is involved with murder and violence, while Venice goes through its Acqua Alta season. My appreciation for this series is growing - Leon‘s writing style can be flippant and satirical but also measured and very precise. Brunetti continues to work through “justice,” which does not always mean legal actions. #19822022 #1996

Lynnsoprano This was one of my favorites. I need to get back to this series. 2y
Librarybelle @Lynnsoprano I‘ve talked with other readers who have said this one is also one of their favorites! I could just envision all of the dampness and cold described from the Acqua Alta…so atmospheric! 2y

The only reason this isn't 5 stars is that it's basically taken me a month to read it... it's so slow!

Librarybelle I‘ve yet to read anything by Fraser! 2y
ravenlee I‘m reading The Year of Lear, and have been surprised by how much of the book is about the Gunpowder Plot. I knew almost nothing about it (standard two sentences in kiddo‘s history book, basically) and it‘s fascinating. This one appeals because of that, but I wonder if it would feel redundant. Of course, it could be years before I get to it, and by then it would all be new to me! 😆 2y
jenniferw88 @ravenlee tbh, I'm not surprised that the Year of Lear features the Gunpowder Plot heavily - it was the year immediately after it, and all the trials/executions took place then. 2y

jenniferw88 @ravenlee I don't think it would feel redundant - it focuses on the lead up and aftermath as well as the main plot. 2y
ravenlee Good to know - I‘ll add it to my list! I was surprised because I expected Year of Lear to be about Shakespeare, and it‘s much more about James and his reign. Which makes sense, as it‘s Shakespeare‘s world and what influenced him, it just wasn‘t what I thought. And it‘s very good, even for someone who just dabbles in the bard‘s works. 2y
jenniferw88 @ravenlee if you want, email me (irene_gulliver@yahoo.co.uk) your address and I'll send the book on, as I had it second-hand and I'm not likely to read it again. 2y

Is this my favorite Grisham? No. Is it the most realistic? No. Was it a fun page-turner? Yes. I had fun reading this story of a high stakes tobacco trial where the defense wants a guaranteed verdict and is willing to go to extraordinary lengths to get it. Lots of good twists and turns, a juror with a secret, and fun dynamics among the jurors. #40thbdaychallenge #1996

Andrew65 This was an enjoyable read. 5y
Blaire @Andrew65 yes, I was looking for a page-turner and this fit the bill. 5y

I just finished reading this one this morning. I haven't watched the show, so I really didn't know what to expect. It's taken me awhile to read it, but I really liked it. I don't always like books that have so many different characters and so many different things going on at once, but I felt like this was so well written that I could easily follow along. #ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #1996

cherinium The complexity of the writing and characters is what makes it so great. 5y
