Out in the Open | Jesϊs Carrasco
20 posts | 12 read | 22 to read
An electrifying debut from a major new Spanish writer that has become an international bestseller. Out in the Open is a dark and gripping story about a young boy who flees his home village after a violent attack by his father and a local Constable and finds himself in a harsh landscape he is not prepared for. In beautifully powerful and visceral prose, Jesϊs Carrasco tells a heartbreaking story of love and survival that marks the launch of a major new international voice in fiction.

Grim, savage, and mesmerizing in the way you don‘t want to put it down. This is a page turnerβ€”consistently grippingβ€”with prose that is clear but never simple, and somehow feels shot with truth all through it. The Cormac McCarthy comparisons are common here, but with the violence, dust, and even vendettas, it gave me a mood of Tarantino as well.

This was a brutal story. A boy flees abuse into a landscape of hunger and thirst. It was amazing.

Carrasco‘s content and style feels like Cormac McCarthy. Out in the Open is a mix of The Road and Blood Meridian.

This is Carrasco's debut novel translated from Spanishβ€”a great read about a boy who is fleeing from an evil man chasing him. Kind of similar to The Road and Signs Preceding the End of the World. It's a bit dystopian and a bit western at the same time. I could really picture this boy's struggles throughout. It's set in an unknown landscape in an unknown timeframe, painting a stark portrait of survival, fear, loneliness, and trust in society. 🏞

Yeah_I_Read I really enjoyed this one! 7y

Evening plans. Reading outside tonight since it's so gorgeous today! I'm not sure what to think of this book yet but I'm intrigued. It's about a boy trying to cross the plains in a dystopian world when he's being sought out. Interesting premise! #booksnbucks

Somehow I read 23 books this month 😡 I finished up The Falling Kingdoms series except for the last one that isn't out yet. I read 2 graphic novels and listened to 2 audiobooks.
These were my favorites this month. I am so glad that I got to read Artemis before it comes out. I'll definitely buy a copy and read it again it was so fun.
I liked When The English Fell but the ending was kind of meh - I felt like it built up a lot and nothing happened

Beachesnbooks How did you like the falling kingdoms series? I've had the first book for awhile but haven't gotten to it yet. 7y
Yeah_I_Read @Beachesnbooks it was good for YA a bit repetitive and at times sappy but I enjoyed it. Just a warning tho, the last book isn't out until February 2018 and #5 ends on a wicked cliffhanger 7y

Compelling story, well written. If you enjoyed The Road by Cormac McCarthy I would recommend this; if not steer clear.

Yeah_I_Read @SaraBeagle did you like Out in the Open? 7y
SaraBeagle @Yeah_I_Read Yes. I loved the ambiguity 7y
Yeah_I_Read @SaraBeagle yeah totally. The writing was really good too! The Road scared the shit out of me lol so I have to say that I liked this one better 7y
SaraBeagle @Yeah_I_Read Haha, yeah, The Road gave me nightmares. It's a great book, but I'll probably never read it again 😱 7y

October was not a great month for me. For a whole month I've been struggling with reading slump so I look forward to November and that I will find the book which going to completely turn and swept me away into the unknown.😁

readinginthedark I understand. Even finishing books I was enjoying felt difficult. I think for me it's that we're nearing the end of the year, and I'm just trying to finish everything I started. πŸ˜• Not really excited about it. 8y
kspenmoll Your reading will turn around- I am a slow reader anyway, but the last week or two life has demanded I pay attention. I know the feeling of trying something, putting it down, just doesn't feel right- there is a book out there when you are ready! 8y
LittleCloud93 Don't be so hard with yourself! 10 books in a month is great! If you continue like that in a year you will read at least 120 books and that's incredible! 😘 8y

Dark tale about a young boy on the run, struggling to survive in a harsh environment. It's atmospheric, violent and emotional story with very detailed, realistic and rich language.

Simona @Maike Did you managed to read for 24 hours? I don't know if I can do this, I need my beauty sleep 😴 8y
Maike @Simona no, I had about 5 or 6 hours of sleep. Due to my time zone I started on midday, it's even harder then I guess πŸ˜„ for my it's most important to have a day just for reading, it doesn't have to be the full 24 hours to make it awesome 😁 8y
Simona @Maike I agree with that, to have a day just for reading is delightful. My start is at 14.00 pm. 8y
rockpools That looks like a fantastic stack of books there - I'll be cheering you on by adding them as you read! 8y
