That's right kids, be comfortable with your personal preferences and don't let the world dictate what you should be, or else the (body) HORRORS will be visited upon thee! 🤦🏼‍♂️ Camilla's transformation was unsettling but entertaining, but the way this author/illustrator paints people in general does not work for me. Do not think I'll be investigating his other work.

Cuilin As a 25+ years preschool/K teacher, can‘t say I like his books either. 3mo
Robotswithpersonality @Cuilin Vindication! 😃 Hey, who knows, maybe there's one little kid who became a successful horror writer after being spookily inspired so early. 😅 3mo
Cuilin @Robotswithpersonality you always hope that the right book finds its way to the right person. He was just not for me or my classroom. 🫶 3mo

I appreciate the levels of creativity evident in such a surreal concoction, but was no one afraid they might traumatize the demographic that typically reads picture books?! 😬

This is about a young girl who is very ill. The type of illness she has is very odd, because it continues to change her skin into different colors and patterns. She is very upset about this change that is happening to her. She doesn't want to be seen anywhere. However, she learns to love the skin that she is in eventually. This is a story that teaches confidence and self-worth. It is a great read and has a great lesson.

This is a classic story that I remember from when I was young. Camilla loved Lima beans but never ate them because her friends didn‘t. Camilla becomes covered in rainbow stripes and misses the first day of school. Her stripes turned into many different colors and patterns. They tried every doctor and every cure, but the only thing that got rid of the stripes were Lima beans.

Published in 1998, this fiction story follows a young girl who wakes up very sick. He skin continues to change to different patterns. The young girl is very insecure of her skin being different patterns, but eventually she learns to be happy in her identity. I would read this story to my students because it has a deep meaning, but it is taught through humor to keep the students engaged. This won the 3 apples book award.

We managed to stay healthy for so long! But…my husband is a wedding photographer and his job is to be in large groups. It was bound to happen.

So, we‘ve been quarantining. Fortunately, aside from the first bout of fever, I‘m feeling okay. Not great, mind you…but okay. Thankful for vaccines — & for timing! Our quarantine period will be over just in time for our vacation (during which time we‘ll be extra, doubly-masked in public). Oof.

Camilla Cream loves lima beans! Her friends, however, do not. When she starts to receive judgement about liking them, she decides to no longer eat them. Suddenly, she wakes up with thick colorful stripes on her body! What could possibly cure this?!? This book is great to teach kids about inclusion and acceptance. It also highlights that being different is okay because that‘s what makes you, you! #UCFLAE3414SP20

This childrens F book;”A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon, is about a girl who is so scared of her first day of school and just wants to fit in, but something strange occurs to her. This would be a perfect book to read on the first day of school.

http://www.thebestclass.org/uploads/5/6/2/4/56249715/badcaseofstripes.pdf
This would also be perfect as a readers theater and there are 18 characters so the whole class could be involved.

Brennap The readers theater resource supports the UDL Principle(5.3)”Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance”. So the book could be read aloud first so the students know the book and then practice doing a readers theater. This supports the ESOL Strategy 50.” For content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities...etc.” It helps students get on their feet and be involved in the story. 5y
Tabitha_H I remember reading this in elementary school. I loved this book it was a great read. I would love to refresh my memory and read it again. Great pick !! (edited) 5y
DrSpalding I can see you really like readers theater! I can promise you that your future students will as well. Use these to build fluency and of course change up the teaching strategy beyond just read aloud. However this book is a great one to read aloud as well. 5y

I think this book is perfect to read in a bullying lesson. The other kids make fun of Camillia for her skin. After reading the book you could talk about how hurt Camillia was from the teasing, and how teasing affects others.

“A Bad Case of Stripes“ by David Shannon, 2004. Picture book. I love this book! It's all about the pressures of fitting in, which is something very relevant to elementary age children, especially the older ones. The illustrations are a vital piece to the story. Camilla has a case of “stripes“ which makes her skin all different types of colors, like rainbow. In the illustrations she really stands out from all the other kids.

This book does a great job of showing the development of the story through the pictures, the content is also age-appropriate. It shows the kids that it is okay to be different and that the most important thing is to be yourself.

This book was about a young girl who did not want to show who she really was because she was afraid of being bullied, and her learning to embrace herself. It is a picture book because the content is appropriate for the age level. Young students can relate to wanting to fit in. Also, the pictures are accurate and consistent with the plot of the text.

“Camilla was always very worried about what other people thought of her”. This quote will probably connect with a lot of children, as many of them are insecure and this could be an easy way to bond with this book.

Review: This book is about a girl named Camilla and she loves lima beans. Camilla becomes so worried about what other children will think of her if they find out she likes lima beans that she breaks out into a bad case of stripes. This book chronicles Camilla as she learns that not everyone likes or dislikes the same things and gradually results in her not caring if the other children know she likes lima beans.

This is one of many tales of someone afraid of what others will think of them; Camilla has a love for lima beans and is worried what people might think. This story sets a good theme for readers to learn early on to be yourself and love who you are. It is a good lengthy story with lots of dialogue and expression.

I would use this modern fantasy picture book in my classroom as a read aloud. Camilla Cream, a closeted lover or Lima beans, and a worrier about others‘ opinions of her, wakes up on the first day of school completely covered in stripes. If the stripes weren‘t bad enough, her skin begins to develop everything people suggest she has. The story raises the question of whether or not it is important to care about what people think of you. #lae3414sp19

SofiaRoselli The website I found gives great discussion questions as well as guidelines for discussion. With the various discussing questions, I can guide information processing, UDL strategy 3.3, in students. ESOL strategy 1, teach questioning for clarification, would also come out of the discussion questions.

It's important for students to be provided discussion questions so they confirm their understanding of the text. Anyway, great post! This book is so colorful and entertaining! 6y
