Book of Mirrors | E O Chirovici

An elegant, page-turning thriller in the vein of Night Film and Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, this tautly crafted novel is about stories: the ones we tell, the ones we keep hidden, and the ones that we ll do anything to ensure they stay buried. When literary agent Peter Katz receives a partial book submission entitled The Book of Mirrors, he is intrigued by its promise and original voice. The author, Richard Flynn, has written a memoir about his time as an English student at Princeton in the late 1980s, documenting his relationship with the protegee of the famous Professor Joseph Wieder. One night just before Christmas 1987, Wieder was brutally murdered in his home. The case was never solved. Now, twenty-five years later, Katz suspects that Richard Flynn is either using his book to confess to the murder, or to finally reveal who committed the violent crime. But the manuscript ends abruptly and its author is dying in the hospital with the missing pages nowhere to be found. Hell-bent on getting to the bottom of the story, Katz hires investigative journalist John Keller to research the murder and reconstruct the events for a true crime version of the memoir. Keller tracks down several of the mysterious key players, including retired police detective Roy Freeman, one of the original investigators assigned to the murder case, but he has just been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer s. Inspired by John Keller s investigation, he decides to try and solve the case once and for all, before he starts losing control of his mind. A trip to the Potosi Correctional Centre in Missouri, several interviews, and some ingenious police work finally lead him to a truth that has been buried for over two decades...or has it? Stylishly plotted, elegantly written, and packed with thrilling suspense until the final page, The Book of Mirrors is a book within a book like you ve never read before."

A literary agent receives the first few chapters of a book claiming to have the solution to a 27-year-old murder but the author dies before completing the manuscript. Peter Katz investigates. As various people are interviewed about the murder of Joseph Weider different stories are told but whose memories are the truth?

Twisty enough to cast doubts as to whether the solution is correct or another case of a false memory of the events.

An interesting book with multiple timelines that explores a cold case murder that took place 3 days before Christmas in NYC in the 80s. One of the timelines is a novel excerpt from one of the other characters who is a suspect. Definitely wasn't what I expected, hence the so-so. Had I been in the right mood for a postmodern thoughtful mystery, it would have been great. #WinterGames #HolidayRead #SlayBells @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick

Listened to the audiobook. I was pleasantly surprised by this, love how the author structured this, developed the characters, and played with the concept of the unreliable narrator(s); really well done.

Can't do it. Avoid the audiobook, there is something off about the pacing and the sentences when it's read aloud.

MyNamesParadise I have the physical book out from the library so hopefully that is better!! 8y

Just did another book drop. I'm getting better at the 'being stealthy' thing. 😂 www.ibelieveinbookfairies.com

Cinfhen How awesome you have a whole campus to use!!! 8y
scripturient @Cinfhen That's actually the city centre of Duisburg, the town where I live. The building in the back is the opera house. :) (edited) 8y
Cinfhen It's beautiful 💗all I saw was gorgeous lawn and lovely looking buildings 😊I admire your book fairy skills 🦋🦄🦋 8y

DrJAdMerricksson I must go check out this book fairy thing. Sounds fun! Ok, but, so....What is in the grass? Birds? 8y
scripturient @DrJAdMerricksson You should. It's so much fun. There are some big fat lazy pigeons sitting in the grass. 🐦😊 8y
drokka I didn't get a chance to see this when I was in Germany. I was ill my first tour day, so my mates did something else whilst I slept. (They live in Budberg). They had a festival when I was there (end of June) by the Schnapps building and had a yummy pastry/doughnut type thing but I don't remember what it's called. Anyway, lovely part of Germany Duisburg and environs. 8y
scripturient @drokka Wow, such a small world! We have family living in Budberg and a colleague is moving there this year. 😃 8y
DrJAdMerricksson @scripturient they look huge! And i went to the site. Bookmarked it. Plan to corral the family into it. We are all bibliophiles, and my sister and niece throw themselves into this kind of thing. I leave books at my inn occasionally, for travellers to snag. Has a note to 8y
DrJAdMerricksson Ugh.....Has a note to pass along (and please to leave a review, since most are indie/hybrid authors books I've gotten as a reviewer) 8y

🌟🌟 This book was just...meh. It had it's moments, but overall it was rather boring. Even when my audiobook-voice crush, Sebastian York (using one of his different nom-de-plums) unexpectedly showed up for the final act of the book...it couldn't save this fomulaic story for me.

It was better then i expected. Didn't not see that ending coming. But still i got many questions left at the end. And i am just thankful that the psychological parts that where mentioned was right for the most part.

I've read a book about mistery at an university and i truelly hated. Obedience was horrible especially if you are a psychology student. But i heard so many great things about book of mirrors that i'm willing to give it a try.

Next one, please! I've heard good things about this. 😃 P.S. (about twenty minutes later): I'm not sure I can deal with the horrible writing style. 😵

Robothugs Oh no 🙈maybe the story will distract you? 8y
MyNamesParadise Oh no don't tell me the writing is horrible!! If you haven't read it, read Night Film by Mariana Pessl. 8y
scripturient @MyNamesParadise Maybe it's just me. The frame narrative is ok but the manuscript that makes the main story sounds like what I'd expect from a beginning writer with lots of tedious, insignificant descriptions of details that bored me to tears. And don't get me started on the dialogues. It was like someone told the author that you can only present a character's past through their own telling people about it. So you have them going into elaborate .. 8y
scripturient ... talks in the way of 'and then I went to college and immediately knew I would make friends there. And then... And then...' I could feel sudden narcolepsy coming on. Sorry, that sounds mean and others may like this book, but I was annoyed very early on and simply couldn't continue. 8y

#currentread Goldsboro book of the month. Just started. Let's see.

My_novel_obsession This sounds super interesting 8y
ScorpioBookDreams Are you a Goldsboro book of the month club member too?! 8y
Oryx @ScorpioBookDreams Yes 😁 Although temporarily pausing my account, as I'm not massively into thriller/crime/fantasy and the seems to be a lot of those recently. I'll probably jump back in again in a few months though. In the meantime, plenty of temptation elsewhere on their website. Bad for my bank balance though! 8y

Oryx @DeborahSmall Just caved on Lincoln in the Bardo today! There were just too many good Litsy reviews to resist. Waking Gods is tempting too... 8y
