Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir
Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir | Padma Lakshmi
A vivid memoir of food and family, survival and triumph, Love, Loss, and What We Atetraces Padma Lakshmi s unlikely path from an immigrant childhood to a complicated life in front of the camera a tantalizing blend of Ruth Reichl s Tender at the Bone and Nora Ephron s HeartburnLong before Padma Lakshmi ever stepped onto a television set, she learned that how we eat is an extension of how we love, how we comfort, how we forge a sense of home and how we taste the world as we navigate our way through it. Shuttling between continents as a child, never quite at home in the world, she lived a life of dislocation that would become habit as an adult. And yet, through all her travels, her favorite food remained the simple rice she first ate sitting on the cool floor of her grandmother s kitchen in South India.Poignant and surprising, Love, Loss, and What We Ate is Lakshmi s extraordinary account of her journey from that humble kitchen, ruled by ferocious and unforgettable women, to the Top ChefJudges Table and beyond. It chronicles the fierce devotion of the remarkable people who shaped her along the way, from her headstrong mother who flouted conservative Indian convention to make a life in New York, to her Brahmin grandfather a brilliant engineer with an irrepressible sweet tooth to the man who was seemingly wrong for her in every way but proved to be her truest ally.A memoir rich with sensual prose and punctuated with evocative recipes, it is alive with the scents, tastes, and textures of a life that spans complex geographies both internal and external.Love, Loss, and What We Ateis an intimate and unexpected story of food and family both the ones we are born to and the ones we create and their enduring legacies.Praise for Love, Loss, and What We Ate Love, Loss, and What We Ate is the Padma we didn t know a frank, introspective look at a fascinating and unusual life. Surprisingly revealing and disarmingly bittersweet. Anthony Bourdain This vivid, generous, finely written memoir reveals the smart, vulnerable, and resourceful person behind the beautifully dressed judge telling the chefs to pack their knives and go home. And the recipes are great! Francine Prose Beautifully written and moving, this book is also a feast for the senses that will leave you hungry for more. It paints an evocative picture on every page, and offers a wonderfully crafted landscape of the culinary textures and cultural touchstones that have shaped both the woman and her palate.Padma has given us something layered and lyrical an immigrant s journey, as well as a young woman s struggle to come into her own. In telling her own story with such grace and artistry, she has created something culturally important for us all. Susan Sarandon"

This is a really interesting story. Padma Lakshmi is brutally honest about the difficulties she's had in her relationships. Her description of how long it took for her to be diagnosed with endometriosis, and the lack of understanding from both doctors and her husband, will be all too familiar to a lot of women.

arlenefinnigan I have to admit, being 5ft 1 with the body shape and metabolism of a Moomin, my gut reaction to her rich evocative descriptions of food was "how does she get to eat like this and still be a model it's not FAIR". An enjoyable read about relationships, family, heritage and the joy and importance of food. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really liked this one too. 3y
CarolynM I know what you mean, those people who eat everything but stay slim are infuriating! On the other hand, I'll take my plus size body over the endometriosis. 3y

It was just the right time for me to listen to this book. Padma openly reflects on her journey from childhood to motherhood with honesty, clarity, beauty and integrity. I really felt like she was prepared to bare her soul and she did. I found her story both heartbreaking and heartwarming. The bonus recipes were an added gift. I especially enjoyed hearing Padma narrate her memoir.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I liked this one too! 4y

Part memoir, part musings, part cookbook, I enjoyed the slow journey to learning more about Padma.
The book has a back and forth narrative as she jumps back and forth from childhood to adulthood and all of the in-between, creating a more personal narrative. Almost like she's having a conversation with the reader.

Definitely recommend this one in audio 🎧

A surprising, heartfelt, intimate memoir. In a non-linear manner, Lakshmi explores her identity as an Indian-American woman, a model who loves food, a devoted reader yearning to exercise her mind more. She opens with her meeting and marriage to Salman Rushdie, then dips back into her childhood. Asides bloom into episodes of luminous musings before returning to the more mundane '...and then this happened...' narrative.

I've never seen Top Chef so went into this read knowing nothing about her.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve watched Top Chef off & on for several seasons, but have never been a massive Padma fan, admittedly because I knew nothing about her. Growing up, she had one foot in America, the other in India, not feeling as though she fit in either place. There‘s depth to her story. She‘s more than a pretty face & a ropy scar. Here, Padma lays her life bare discussing her health & relationships with candor. There isn‘t much sugar-coating, if any.

TheBookHippie One of my favorite discoveries was this memoir. 6y
britt_brooke @TheBookHippie It really kind of blew me away. It was much more than I was expecting. 💚 6y

I've had this on my Kindle for years, and I think I thought she'd be shallow or full of herself so I didn't crack it open. Instead I found Padma Lakshmi to be refreshingly open, honest, and direct about her relationships, health issues, career, and her love for food. She starts in 2007 when she moves out of the home she shared with Salman Rushdie, then goes back in time before catching us up to the almost present.

britt_brooke I just finished this today. I had put off reading it for the same reason, but was also pleasantly surprised. 6y

▶️🎧 Really enjoying Padma‘s memoir so far. I started listening to it in honor of the Top Chef Kentucky finale tomorrow night. My good friend Chef Sara Bradley is a finalist!! 👩🏻‍🍳🍽👏🏻 I‘m so proud of her. Freight House, her restaurant in our hometown Paducah Ky, is the first farm-to-table in the area plus it‘s an impressive bourbon bar. 🥃 Great things are happening for Sara!! It‘s been a blast watching her on TV!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve been routing for her! It‘s been such a great season. 6y
Beachesnbooks I hope your friend wins, she‘s my favorite! 6y
britt_brooke @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Beachesnbooks Yay! Thanks for cheering her on. She‘s such a fun person as you can tell from the show. In the last 4 years, she‘s opened her restaurant, met and married her husband, and is now pregnant with a baby girl due in just a few weeks. 💕 Winning Top Chef would be the icing on the cake! WhatWouldJaneDo So excited for the finale tomorrow. Sara is my pick to win, she's been killing it lately! I read Padma's book a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it as well, I thought she was really open and vulnerable. It went beyond the fun anecdote style in a lot of celeb memoirs. 6y
britt_brooke @WhatWouldJaneDo 🙌🏻🙌🏻 She‘s been on fire since the waffle incident. She currently has a dish called “chicken and not-boxed waffles” on her restaurant menu. 😆 Padma‘s book is far exceeding my expectations. 6y
litenthusiast I've really enjoyed this season. I've been cheering for Sarah from the beginning. I really hope she wins. Plus, it makes me want to visit KY. 6y
WhatWouldJaneDo Hahaha I may need to make a pilgrimage to Kentucky just to eat that! She's been one of my faves the whole time but I'm loving seeing all her long term prep the last few weeks, like having taken care of her garden and trying to learn some Chinese before they left for Macau. 6y
britt_brooke @litenthusiast Thanks for cheering her on! She‘s a great person. 💕 I love that they‘ve highlighted my home state this season. 💚 I left 17 years ago, but it‘s home. It‘s where all my family is. 6y
Prairiegirl_reading Sara is totally my favourite this season too. I have really enjoyed how this season has purely been about the food and very little drama between the chefs. 6y
britt_brooke @WhatWouldJaneDo 💚 Her garden was amazing. When she made the matzo balls for her mom, Bebe (who makes all the deserts at Sara‘s restaurant), that was so special. I‘ve heard that‘s also currently on her restaurant‘s menu. I really need to make a trip “home” just to eat there while this stuff is available! 6y
britt_brooke @Prairiegirl_reading It really has been a low-key season full of awesome, likable chefs. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Prairiegirl_reading Yes—we have appreciated that any drama just got edited out. But honestly, all the chefs were so lovely. Maybe there wasn‘t drama! 🤷🏼‍♀️🤓 6y
LeahBergen Ohhhh! I‘ve been watching (most) of this season and love her!! 6y

The title of this book is aptly named! It really was all about love, loss and what was eaten. I love Padma on Top Chef so I was eager to read this and really enjoyed it. There were moments where I think she was trying to hard to prove how smart she was with her words, but it was great getting to know her more through this audio book. She has the most soothing voice ever so if you need something calming, read this. #femaleauthor #food #love

I have to do a few #Recommendsday posts today, last one I promise! I picked this one up for a challenge two years ago, and was pleasantly surprised. I have never followed her career and knew almost nothing about her going in, and although some have bashed this book because of info on her former, famous husband (again I had no idea going in), I found the book honest, and with a lot of female empowerment as she found her own way and her own voice...

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...through her divorce, health issues, and some very interesting cultural divides between her life here and family in India....all of which has lead her to be the open advocate she is for endometriosis, healthcare, and other woman‘s issues today. 7y

Sooo... I think I thought this book was something else when I impulsively checked out the audiobook from my library. Having read "Joseph Anton" when it came out, I had serious reservations about this book, as Rushdie had nothing good to say about his 4th wife. I knew very little about her other than her being married to Salman Rushdie and Top Chef which I've never seen but this was a $1.99 ebook purchase #becauseofLitsy. Found the India culture and foodie parts interesting but her personal life left a bad taste in my mouth. Not trying to judge, but her saying that men do this all the time when she was two-timing (and oops, got pregnant w/o being sure which was the father) made me 😬. Almost a pan!

I've always had mixed feelings about Lakshmi as a tv host. She's beautiful and mysterious, but I've often found her a bit cold. This book has changed my mind about that totally. She's lived a very interesting life, and I enjoyed reading this. I also loved hearing about her family and the close relationship she has with them. Oh. And the food. Great book too, by the way!

I really enjoyed listening to this - Lakshmi has a lovely voice and as someone who also has endometriosis it meant a lot to listen to her speak so eloquently and honestly about her experience with it. The best bits were obviously the food tho 🥗🍔🌭🍕🍤🧀🥒🥕🌽🍆🌶🍯🍿🍩🍪🍭
