Thank you so much @Jari-chan for my #HauntedHollowSwap gifts, the everything is perfect 🎃 I can‘t wait to start the books. 👻 Happy Halloween to you.
It‘s been snowy here all day and I‘ve decided to break in my new mug from @Book_Fiend_Melissa with a nice hot chocolate (and ghost stories!).
👻👻
As much as I enjoyed the title story, with its Victorian atmosphere and Holmsian feel, the contemporary stories "Alice Baker" and "The Front Room" best conjured the ghostly sense of unease for which I read supernatural fiction. "Boy Number Twenty-One", the remaining tale is a well written story, but didn't give me goose bumps. Overall, 4?, but "Alice Baker" is 4.5?
Although my October morning was bright, rather than dank, I'm always a little thrilled when the story I'm reading is set at the time of year in which I'm reading it 😊
I loved the title story, blending aspects of the ghostly tale, a Holmsian psychic detective, and Gilmanesque psychological horror. If there's such a thing as cosy horror, this may be it. I'm hoping the other stories, different as they appear to be in tone, are as enjoyable.
Hill's stories are in the tradition of M. R. James & E. F. Benson, creepy, supernatural and paranormal, rather than outright horror. Starting this collection of 4 short stories, I'm pleased to find the first one using the Psychic Detective format, mainly because it allows me to mention the Thomas Carnacki stories of William Hope Hodgson and the John Silence stories of Algernon Blackwood, because who doesn't love an egregious literary reference?
Bk3 is done! She writes very old fashioned ghost stories, much like the old Victorian ones that you get in those bound books of short stories. Or even like Edgar Allen Poe. They all have very ambivalent endings, almost leaving on a question which most paranormal tales don‘t do these days. My favourite was the last one, The Front Room, evil old ladies are terrifying!👵🏻 #HSreadathon #24B4Monday #SummersEndReadathon
Bk3 of my #readathons is a small book, this time it‘s horror short stories. In the title story, a paranormal detective recounts his most memorable case, in Boy Twenty One a lonely boy makes a friend, Alice Baker tells the story of an office worker who always smells like decay & The Front Room, a devout mother tries to protect her children from their evil grandmother. Sounds like a good nights reading! #HSreadathon #24B4Monday #SummersEndReadathon
Classic horror. When reading Susan Hill you can count on good stories. Nice summer read. 😊👻
On to the next horror story for this readathon! 🤓👻 It's still relatively bearable weather outside. Have to make use of it before it becomes too hot and read on the balcony. Today will be the hotest day of the weekend. Tomorrow it will be cooler. 😊 #24B4Monday
Morning reading. Almost 15 hours done. 😁 #24B4Monday
First horror story finished from this one just as I hit the 10h mark on my #24B4Monday challenge. Just perfectly freezing horror for such a hot sunny summer day! ☀️😁
Had to move my reading nook back to inside because it became way too hot for reading on the balcony. I usually read horror during summer and this I started today and it just feels perfect! Traditional horror stories. ❤ #24B4Monday
#BookMail Pt2 This is the 3rd in these editions of Susan Hills work I‘ve managed to acquire. I‘ve already read Printers Devil Court & have The Woman In Black on my #TBRcart ready to go. I‘d never heard of this small volume of Hills work, can‘t wait to dive in on a stormy night, when the house creaks & it sounds like the wind is moaning.⛈🌬
Probably between a pick and a so-so; I did enjoy these stories but I didn‘t find them particularly creepy or scary and I could sort of predict some of them? But they were an enjoyable and quick Halloween read 🎃💀👻
New books today! 😂🤦🏼♀️
Getting myself ready for October by buying some scary books 🎃
I loved The Woman in Black and have always wanted to try another Susan Hill so when I saw this gorgeous book I had to buy it! 👻
Looking forward to next month 💀
#riotgrams freebies, I won this at a special night at the library. There was a quiz on ghosts and apparently I have read more ghost and horror books then I thought and got the most answers 😀 who knew that I knew bram stocker was Irish? Amazing what you remember when a new book is the motivation
Love Susan Hill and horror-thriller fiction and this is a great little collection of stories. Easy read - perfect for a long bus trip (incidentally, where I read my copy!) Perhaps not the most complex and involving thing ever but enjoyable nonetheless.
Personal highlight - 'Alice Baker'. Really creepy and stuck with me for a while.
I mostly read horror only during summer time and since it's such a beautiful day I've decided to beging with one of these. Just can't decide which one. 🤔
Short book of spooky ghost stories. I found the last one to be spookiest of all.
Found this and just had to get it! I didn't even know this existed! Perfect addition to my Susan Hill collection.
Hey guys, I'm hosting the Poetry genre for #TravellingBook started by @Whatannareads ! Signups for the first 6 months (September to February) are now open, the first 6 people to comment with their chosen month will get it :)

Nice quick reads. The Front Room was especially spooky.
As always, Hill does not disappoint with her ghost stories. These are more of the creepy kind than outright scary but I still loved them. And how can you possibly resist this stunning cover? 😍
My #SecretSantaBookSwap gift is up next. Looking forward to curling up with this tonight. 🤓🛋📚
That was so, so good. Particularly liked the Alice Baker, so creepy
It's already the 24th here so I just opened my #SecretSantaBookSwap package. Thank you so much, @qumrah I love the book and the journal and that chocolate is not going to last long. 😊 Merry Xmas!!!!
I love seeing these all over Litsy. I always first look at the least populair book, so many interesting titles there! I don't use goodreads so much so my list is very incomplete but I still wanted to share my book year 😊
Not the most productive book month but I am very happy about this as I have been working a lot and been on a holiday. Also, I really enjoyed all these books except for Don Quixote which was mandatory but I would have bailed on otherwise.
Wednesday is #reccomandsday ! This beautiful book contains four short ghostly stories. They are not very scary but after reading them all (in one evening! ) I was left feeling a bit spooked anyway. Not all stories are equally great. Boy Twenty-One was my favourite! A little creepy but more about the strength of friendship. Alice Baker was the creepiest one for me. I'll definately come back to these stories, great for cold months and tea!🌟🌟🌟🌟
#bookmail just in time for Halloween this beautiful book of ghost stories arrived! I already has quite a scary day with a tough classical lit. exam 👻. And tomorrow I have an even scarrier classical latin end ethics exam. So now it's time do relax with my #halloweenread and a halloween cookie! Happy Halloween Littens! #booktober
@RealLifeReading
My first trial of Susan Hill and I am a fan. A collection of creepy short stories, this book has made an impression that will not fade quickly. I enjoyed the mysterious mood that was quickly established quickly for each story and the lack of fleshing out the details forced my mind down the tortured paths with her. An excellent choice for my Halloween horror!
My TBR for #AllHallowsRead. I am usually not one for scary stories but after reading HEX I am really getting into it. Can't wait for my copy of The Travelling Bag to arrive, it is so beautiful😍. And jumping on the Miss Peregine wagon a bit late but never the less excited, the movie was great! @litsy
A book of spooky, short stories. Perfect for October and Halloween! Can't wait to read it.
Susan Hill's books have the best covers. 😍
Went shopping in Arnhem today with my book bestie @Noonnie ! Stopped by this great bookstore with new and secondhand books, this is my haul 😱😍 so happy! And plenty of material for #Scaretober ! Also this adorable bookbag to set the mood 😍😍😍😍
