Survivor
Survivor: A Novel | Chuck Palahniuk
From the author of the cult sensation Fight Club (now a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter) comes Survivor."A turbo-charged, deliciously manic satire of contemporary American life." --Newsday"The only difference between suicide and martyrdom is press coverage," according to the "been there, done that" wisdom of Tender Branson, last surviving member of the Creedish Death Cult. At the opening of Chuck Palahniuk's hilariously unnerving second novel, Tender is cruising on autopilot, 39,000 feet up, dictating the whole of his life story into Flight 2039's "black box" in the final moments before crashing into the vast Australian outback. Not since Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night has there been as dark and telling a satire on the wages of fame and the bedrock lunacy of the modern world. Wickedly incisive and mesmerizing, Survivor is Chuck Palahniuk at his deadpan peak.

I liked this even more than Fight Club. I love the way Palahniuk's mind works. I'm excited to read more of his books.

LiterRohde I haven‘t thought about it in exactly these words, but on almost a daily basis I work super hard so people don‘t notice how much I am physically, mentally, and spiritually hurting; what a fraud and fake I am; how I have almost none of my shit together; that I am disappointed by who I am. It is exhausting being me. 6y
VioletBramble I think most people feel this way. I also think that most people have no idea what other people are going through in their lives. Or what they have gone through. 6y
LiterRohde @VioletBramble I mentally understand this. I guess that‘s one reason I share stuff like this. But it certainly does not make it much easier. The basic concept might be the same but the details are so damn specific that it leaves you still feeling the odd one out. And some people are better at bouncing back and not internalizing everything. 6y

LauraJ I‘m sorry you‘re going through this and I have zero advice since I‘m going through it too. Do you have a support network of any kind? Can we help you find resources to build one? 6y
LiterRohde @LauraJ Thanks for the kind thoughts and concern. At this point, this way of thinking has become a way of life. It is who I am. I overthink everything. I write it out every once in awhile to help myself and others take a step back and breathe. None of us really has the answers. We do our best with what we got. But if there is ever anything I can do to help you, let me know. 6y

Called off work and spent my Chinese New Year weekend doing some local traveling. Chuck Palahniuk is one of my favorite audiobook staples and I eagerly downloaded this one for the drive. Survivor is probably now one of the top 2 of his books for me, alongside Haunted. Enjoyed this read.

Loved it. Very true to Palahniuk‘s style and such a biting story. There are strong characters with a bit of a creepy past and a strange way of coming together and then a mysterious lead up to the end. Very good writing as usual.

Sci fi, fantasy, afrofuturism, Batman, gothic, horror, noir; this would be such an epic nerd-out session!

2. I would say Chuck Palahniuk really pulled me out of my comfort zone and got me to seek out books that challenged me. He was one of the first authors whose new release I couldn't wait to get ahold of

I loved this dark comedy about a suicide cult survivor turned Mickey Mouse messiah. It's a grim satire of consumer culture and religion. Don't get frustrated with the beginning. It gets weird and wonderful. Although the protagonist could be frustratingly passive, this commentary on the cult of celebrity has aged well. It's still relevant, twisted, and funny 20 years later. Damn good social commentary.

If you like bizarre and crazy, this novel is for you. While Survivor isn‘t a fast-paced novel in the beginning, it morphs into a wild ride and spirals out of control in the end. I enjoyed it. Overall rating: 4.46 stars.

Celebrity is such an easy target for satire that it can be more difficult to pull off without being too obvious. Palahniuk is up to the task though as he weaves the twisted tale of Tender Branson, former cult member turned celebrity, who provides his story to the flight recorder of a crashing airplane. #fame #septembowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen

#bestcharactername I've always loved the name Tender Branson. We meet him as he records his own suicide note to the black box of a plane he has hijacked (and emptied). He was raised in a cult and, like all but the first-born sons, at 17 he left for the Outside World where he was hired out a servant or tender. The girls were each named Biddy. #booktober

Meh. Thats how this book felt. It literally feels like a prequel to Fight Club. And i've never read fight club, only watched the movie. Which is a testament to how strong Palahnuk's voice and writing style is, really.

But this book felt long, and slow, and like I'd basically already seen it in Fight Club, though the details were slightly different. Or like this was just one long, drawn out backstory.
⭐️⭐️1/2

Driftglass The cynic in me says it was constructed from a lot of leftover Fight Club material. 8y
AlexandraGriffin @Driftglass that honestly wouldn't surprise me. It's too similar. I'll try another palahnuk book again someday, but this one was just too wannabe-fight club that I wasn't impressed. 8y

Morning commute thoughts.

BooksTeasAndBookishThings My Husband doesn't read, but anytime we have watched a Nicholas Sparks movie, he already knows: "Who is going to die?" Haha 8y
AlexandraGriffin @BooksTeasAndBookishThings hahaha they're all basically the same plot, just with slightly different details. I read two or three in a row and now can't remember which details go with which book, and I feel like that is likely a similar thing with palahnuk's books. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Yep. I vaguely remember reading that one of the very first ones, if not THE first one, (maybe A Walk To Rmember) was loosely based on his sister? And it was such a huge success it seems like he can't get away from the death for love R&J kind of formula. 8y
AlexandraGriffin @BooksTeasAndBookishThings definitely. And I mean if I read one a year it'd be ok, but you know it's going to be "boy meets girl" then filler, then "rain storm romantic get together" then drama, then the death/resolution ending. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Exactly. While sweet, so predictable. Annually is probably the right way to go lol 8y

I can't believe how annoyed I am at this book. Maybe I just don't get it? It's feeling like one of those movies that is overly confusing and weird but everyone calls it deep and genius instead. What if Palahniuk is just full of shit?

Jerame2999 That is a definite possibility. 8y
Liza I read a bunch of palahniuk in high school and right after, and eventually I decided he was full of shit and just wrote the same book over and over again with slightly different characters and scenarios. 8y
StephTKO I've only ever read one of his books, Damned. And even though the main character was a young girl, I thought the whole thing was pretty ridiculous, self-indulgent male masturbatory bs. The whole experience was one huge eye roll. Frustrating because back when he was popular I bought several of his book to add to TBR where they remain to this day, a decade later. 8y
Arbol I loved Invisible Monsters and liked Fight Club but haven't enjoyed anything since and stopped reading altogether after Choke. They just got tedious. 8y
MagpieBricolage You aren't alone in those feelings! I'm on the "he's full of shit" bandwagon for sure. Pygmy is what did me in permanently on his stuff. 8y
