Things That Make White People Uncomfortable | Dave Zirin, Michael Bennett

This is an excellent personal and raw biography from a man that wants nothing more than to be honest and authentic. He speaks about personal struggles and failures truthfully. He also gives a human face to the NFL protest and BLM. I think any College football fan or NFL fan should give it a listen.

This is an interesting story but ultimately fell flat. I don‘t see anyone outside of Texas would care. However if you took Texas history at all and want a story that Texans don‘t tell I would give this a shot.

I wasn‘t jazzed about starting this book. At first it was Star Wars political machinations and I can barely stand following senate hearings in the real world I don‘t need it in my entertainment. However the author has the presence of mind and skill to make it interesting. Leia has always been a bit of a Mary Sue. Yet in this version she has a deep inner life and has motivations and agency. I would encourage any Star Wars fan to pick it up.

Jerame2999 The Han Solo voice actor is REALLY bad, but luckily this is Leia‘s story and he is barely in it. 6y

My first audiobook from the library. It was a quick and interesting listen. This book would be a great intro for people who find the spiritual aspects of mindfulness to hokey. I did got some insights but this book isn‘t really my thing.

A very interesting look at the idea of mindfulness. #intricate #sterile #science This isn‘t really how I think of mindfulness but it is a great way to see another side to a guiding principle. This is my palette cleanser after finishing #campnanowrimo 👍👍 feeling really good about that. I realize the work has just started as far as getting to a finished product. I went for novella length instead.

Just had a breakthrough while writing for #campnanowrimo I actually know where the story is going! It just hit me. I haven‘t felt that kind of rush since being on stage in college. It feels really good. 😀😃😁

I am attempting #campnanowrimo and I just had my most productive day so far 1667 words. Makes me feel good. I‘m not sure if the story is coherent or not, but that is what editing is for right? Just wanted to share. My reading has definitely taken a back seat this month. I will pick it back up after I finish. 😁🐻👻🍕This is what I have been reading in between.

I picked this up because it was the first EVENT in comics I remember. I was too young for secret wars or anything like that. I wanted to get the full story and this was on sell at the library for a dollar. If it had been any more I bet I would not have bought it. I am enjoying a deeper look into the Superman character. With the novel version you get more commentary from a character we all know VERY well. I am only 70 pages in but I am enjoying it.

It‘s funny, I guess my favorite books are always finished at 4 am. This book is amazing. Yes, it is an 80s throw back and a twist on the traditional possession story, but the emotional resonance of the characters is what makes this novel stand out. Not since IT have I enjoyed getting to know characters this much. It is one of those few novels that when you finish you just feel comfortable in your pain and joy. After all you tried.

knittedgnome I loved this book!! So fun! 7y
Jerame2999 Yeah this is the first book in about 2 years that I was savoring the ending instead of looking forward to the next book I was going to read. 7y

Instituting a new rule. No more buying OR checking out books from the library, until I am done with the ones I am reading. I have 60 pgs left in MBFE and for the first time in a long time I am excited to see how it ends and not just looking for the next book I am going to read. 😃

It started out well & interesting yet soon became a slog of one murder after another after another. I understand that was the whole point. I also understand that life does not follow a strict narrative. However since this book was billed as a social science study of inner city murder & what can be done there were no solutions raised. It was simply touristic murder after a while without any point. Maybe I am asking for an answer that isn‘t there.

Alias Grace: A Novel | Margaret Atwood
Pickpick

This review is actually for the Netflix mini series but since Atwood is a supervising producer on it it feels justified being here. My wife and I watched the entire 6 episode series in one night. It was a beautiful and heartbreaking story. There were many times that I forgot it was an Atwood story and other times when her humor was front and center. The first chilling show I have seen in a while. A must watch for an Atwood fan. Amazing.

Ok I loved Oryx and Crake. I relished the world that was built in The Year of The Flood. I couldn‘t get into this book. The survivalist hippies just didn‘t speak to me. Which considering my political and socialist beliefs is astounding. Maybe I should try again? Am I the only one?

StephTKO I sort of felt that way about Oryx and Crake. I also feel like I need to reread it. 7y
Beachesnbooks I thought Oryx and Crake was the strongest of the 3 but I did still think Maddaddam was quite good. I think people usually have a clear favorite of the first or second but I don't think I've ever seen anyone prefer the third one 7y
Jerame2999 @StephTKO I enjoyed the first book immensely. The way Atwood wrote the scenes between Crake and Snowman were pitch perfect for me. That is my problem with the third book I am not connected to any character. I will try again though. Atwood is amazing and this maybe a book I wasn‘t ready to understand yet. 🤷‍♂️ 7y
Jerame2999 @Beachesnbooks That is actually encouraging to hear. I‘m glad I‘m not going the only one. I will try again. 7y

Eating Animals | Jonathan Safran Foer
Pickpick

This book is a very good introduction into the realities of the factory farm system and is important for anyone that is still eating meat and especially chicken. It is written as a journalist and does not take a moral side one way or the other. He simply states facts. That are disturbing but facts none the less. If you do eat meat I think this is a great book to start with to see what the real choice you are making at a restaurant or supermarket.

Forever Odd | Dean R. Koontz

This book was not offensive at any point just mediocre. The twist seemed silly and the noir feeling felt tacked on. Most of Koontz books feel forced. There seems to be no authenticity to his works instead they feel like cash grabs. Just my opinion.

Super Bowl ... of Pretzels! 🥨🥨🥨 the only bowl I care about. I am not really enjoying this book but I‘m already halfway so I will finish. Sometimes that‘s when it gets better. The back 50%

Reggie I gave up Koontz once his books started sounding like his other books. My favorite Koontz memory was when I was at Texas Tech Bandcamp in 96 and I read Twilight Eyes, which I think King piggybacks off of in one of his short stories about someone trying to quit smoking and seeing the monster/body snatchers that walk among us. Anyway TE has to do with a carnival in the 70‘s and it reads like one of those dark scary movies you watch from 1-3a.m. 7y
Jerame2999 @Reggie I read intensity and was off Koontz for good. Then I watched the Odd Thomas movie and enjoyed the main character. I figured hey I read intensity in high school maybe Koontz is better than I remember. NO. Like I said I will finish this and I‘m good. I was just looking for something else I guess. 7y

This was a fun read with well developed characters. They still felt a bit D&D meets Firefly but I enjoyed it. All the love triangles got a little annoying and Dad‘s appearance felt rushed but it is what it is. A solid story and I loved Steel and Nova. Riff is a Han Solo wannabe. The names are dumb in a campy sort of way. After reading through this review it sounds like I didn‘t like this book. If I didn‘t like it I would not have finished it.

In an effort to read more unknown authors. At least unknown to me. I am reading some kindle books this year. I am hoping this will get me a wider range of voices. Wish me luck. Also I think ebooks are fine but I miss the weight and feel of physical books. Wow look out for these hot takes!

Jerame2999 On a side note. 40 pages in and the female characters already have needs and wants. That is more than I can say for The Magicians. Gauh! I think that might be my most hated book now. Twilight was better. 7y

Anyone who has read this I need help. It feels like Quentin is the worst character in history. He plays a prank and then feels like a hero and his first reaction is to feel good that HE GETS TO LOOK AT ALICE. Not that she was ok but that his needs are met. I can‘t go through 400 post pubescent nerd boy jerk off hero fantasy. No wait I won‘t! #help #Quentinisterrible #Foff! I don‘t know if this is a spoiler. Nope 👎 decided I‘m done. Foff Coldwater

This is an example of why the show is better for representation than the book so far. The male characters are more understandable in the book, BUT the women in the book are hardly even characters much less deep and interesting ones. I don‘t know if I will keep reading. There are better books out there and I am tired of making excuses for writers.

Couldn‘t finish it. I had 100 pages left and just didn‘t care anymore. It is a mix of a lot of influences but not really it‘s own thing. Never got outside the realm of imitation. There were good scenes but they all seemed like scenes cut from other universes. I‘m good won‘t finish this book and definitely won‘t go on in the series.

So Sammy is a woman and so is Naomi. I was afraid first that it would be a BS love triangle and then it ended up being so much worse. This is why I wish I could find a female sci-fi author. Not to say it would be different but stuff like this coming from two men is infuriating. I love Atwood and have gotten into Connie Willis but after that I am tapped. #recommendations #womenscifiauthor #annoyed
