HELP! I‘m a teacher in Manitoba. Currently trying to figure out a legal way to continue my read out load with my students during a 3 week school cancelation. Is this possible?

Tamra If parents have access to internet, how about video/audio recordings via a tool like Zoomroom? 5y
CarlyQuinn Is it legal though? I don‘t want to get into trouble 5y
Indydancingbookworm I‘d think that since it‘s for educational purposes, it would fall under fair use, but you should check with a lawyer or contact the publisher to be sure. 5y
thebacklistbook You could read it to them over Skype rather than recording it. Definitely discuss with the publisher though. 5y

I‘m especially excited about this one as it was written by a former student‘s mother whom I like immensely. This is Dari‘s first book. She and her husband also wrote a book together about traveling with their then two young kids around the world for a year. It‘s called “Don‘t Try This At Home.” So fun and interesting to actually know the people in the book!

It took me a few months of on and off reading for several factors. For one, it‘s a very tough subject and what was once a fascination as a kid with little experience and understanding of the world around me, it is now much harder for me to digest all at once the depravity that can so often exist in mankind. I have heard that some parts of this novel have been adjusted for its readability. Otherwise, this is a really good read. Get a tissue.

Book 2 of Alex and Catherine‘s story. The rebellion has begun and Alex finds himself in high demand within the Prince‘s army. As the book starts off, he and Catherine have not seen each other in months, both desperate to know of the other‘s safety. Catherine has returned to her family‘s home in England and is struggling to fit back into her former life as a self-absorbed lady of the ton.

Great book! I can appreciate a strong female character.

Catherine starts out as an overindulged, rude English lady who finds herself married to a Scottish rebel disguised as a merchant. Her scheming ways have finally caught up with her. She and her new, albeit reluctant husband Alex make their way to the highlands in order for him to return home after years in hiding. They will surprise not only each other with their feeling but also themselves.

Linear As pick up lines go, this one may result in weird looks or backing away slowly before running full out away from you. Haha 7y
CarlyQuinn @Linear it would indeed. Context: milk and honey is a series of poems in 4 parts. The second part (where this was pulled from) is called “love”. It is the telling of an at times tumultuous, disheartening and even uneven relationship. 7y

Bailedbailed

As much as I would typically enjoy anything written by Anne Rice, I think this work was really frustrating and long-winded to read. I kept trying to pick it back up for years, but her damn symbolisms and symbolisms of symbolisms and is he a ghost or a rockstar or a figment of the main character‘s imagination or am I now going insane?!? It wasn‘t to my taste, so I bailed. ☹️

wanderlustforwords I've still to read Anne Rice. 7y

Andrea4 Ha, this has been on my shelf for years! Now I know not to bother- The last ones of hers I read were Taltos (made me disgusted) and Pandora (I enjoyed for like a light read). I used to be really into her but I think I just grew out of her, if that's possible. 7y
DGRachel I haven‘t read anything of hers in decades. Cry to Heaven is my favorite of her novels, though. I‘m sure I read Violin, but I can‘t remember a darn thing about it. 😮 7y
OrangeMooseReads I didn‘t love this one. 7y
Velvetfur Hmmm, I used to be obsessed with her work but the last few of hers that I read didn't grab me like the earlier ones did. I think I've read Violin but I can't remember! Funny, I was thinking about her just the other day and wondering how many books of hers I might have missed in the years since I've read anything by her! 7y
CarlyQuinn @Velvetfur she has had a lot of ups and downs. She was at one time a born again Christian. Not sure if she still is and if it had to do with the writing of this, but when this was happening, she denounced her vampire series, which was very disappointing to me. 7y
Velvetfur @CarlyQuinn Oh wow, I didn't know about that! I must do some research at some point, thanks for the update! 7y

For any #FRENCHTEACHERS out there looking for those hard to find French resources, #PosterPals does some great stuff. It‘s a bit $$ but it comes laminated and in full colour. They have a regular word wall and a math word wall. Just got mine a and I‘m spending a bit of time cutting it up tonight. They also have some great sound card bundles with CDs.

Le petit prince is a bit dark. Don‘t know why people insist on showing it to young kids FYI...

TheBookAddict 🙌🏽Not a French teacher, but I took French for 4 yrs in HS and 2 yrs. in college so I plan to teach my future kids (lol) some French. I also need to touch up on it a bit myself as well, so I‘ll be looking into it. And for some reason it seems like a lot of French kids stories are a bit dark, well at least the ones I was introduced to were. (edited) 7y
CarlyQuinn @TheBookAddict French Immersion is a wonderful option if you have it in your area. I forgot to mention that these are also great because they always include the determinants. You can get some good resources on teachers pay teachers but they often leave out the determinants or are riddled with mistakes 7y
TheBookAddict @CarlyQuinn yeah, I don‘t come across many people who speak French here, most people are amazed that i even know it. So I‘ve decided to start listening to French audiobooks. I‘ve kept on listening to French music and stuff like that, but I need to practice speaking it. Mostly because I would love to go to France and Montreal sometime. Thanks, I‘ll be looking into it. 7y

TheBookAddict @CarlyQuinn 😂 I should! Now I have to convince my husband. 😂 he‘ll feel left out since he only knows a couple of phrases. 7y
AlaMich That's so cool that you teach French immersion! I live in the US, where dual-language Spanish immersion is becoming a lot more common. If I had kids I would want them in that program, also because I have been studying Spanish for a thousand years myself now 😊. 7y
CarlyQuinn @AlaMich It‘s really a lovely opportunity for kids to get to learn additional languages, especially if they want to travel or even live abroad. There are also more opportunities for advancement in workplaces, and they get to experience more cultural diversity. I‘m glad to hear that immersion settings are becoming more popular in the USA now! @TheBookAddict just don‘t move to Quebec in that case. St. Boniface in Winnipeg is a good compromise! 7y

Three tragedies by Lorca. These are Spanish plays set in the 1930s, during a time and in a place where women were very oppressed. I was lucky enough to be involved in a production of “The House of Bernarda Alba” several years ago (pictured bottom right) and selected an excerpt (top right) that perfectly describes the judgements women heap upon each other not only in these works and in the times these were set in, but also today.

Andrea4 😯😢 7y

Not a big fan of “abuse for the sake of interest” stories and I didn‘t really feel that the author had a firm grasp of how a victim of abuse might react to the physical act of intimacy. Some good parts of this book, but I think this is an example of how we tend to glorify rape culture. I know that some might think that I‘m expecting too much from a romance novel. I personally think that is not the case and we need to be more careful of this issue.

RaimeyGallant Interesting. How did she react? 7y
CarlyQuinn @RaimeyGallant As though it was a black/white situation. It was fine and then wasn‘t as in she had no real reaction to intimacies with a man until he did one thing that was too similar to her abuser. Maybe this is the case for some women, but many that I know who have had painful experiences do not experience it this way. 7y
RaimeyGallant Many do experience it this way though. I can understand if the author simplified it, but there are many different ways of experiencing life after assault. 7y
See All 13 Comments
CarlyQuinn @RaimeyGallant but it seemed disingenuous, especially as I can understand someone feeling this way after years have separated them from the experience, but this would be within a matter of days/weeks. 7y
RaimeyGallant Wow. That's a short amount of time. 7y
CarlyQuinn @RaimeyGallant yes, so you can see why I wasn‘t very happy with the plot. 7y
RaimeyGallant I do. 7y
Andrea4 And this is why I tend to stay away from romance...the majority of it keeps putting women "back where they belong" ugh. 7y
CarlyQuinn @Andrea4 I fully agree with you. I have a few authors that I really enjoy who just don‘t sit with that. You‘d be pretty safe reading their books because their female characters are generally very strong: Nora Roberts, Diana Gabaldon, Marsha Canham and Hannah Howell. If I think of more, I‘m let you know. I‘ll be sure to post specific books too that I find have strong female characters. 7y
Andrea4 Awesome! 7y
readinginthedark It‘s interesting that you recommend Diana Gabaldon, though. I‘ve specifically avoided the Outlander series because a friend told me that the characters excuse rape as part of life, especially the main character with her love interest. 7y
Updrifting I write romantic suspense, and I agree with you about being careful with those issues. Especially when intimacy is the point, a reader with that background will be vulnerable. 7y
CarlyQuinn @Updrifting thank you for your thoughts. It really is so important to, especially for this topic, write about either a) what you know (your own experiences) or b) do your research. 7y

This was an easy read. It‘s meant for high school aged girls but if you‘re looking for something fluffy with some surprising depth, it‘s a good choice. This is a trilogy and all three books are well thought out and written.

A young girl and her brother and mother go to the lake house of her mother‘s friend, the same as every other summer. She has had a long standing crush on the older son for years, but this summer, things are going to change.

RadicalReader @CarlyQuinn is your username in reference to the amazing and incredible Harley Quinn from the Suicide Squad?! 7y
CarlyQuinn @RadicalReader yes(ish) as my interest in that character is from comic book and tv show appearances, way before the movie. She was one of my first cosplays as it happens. I plan to do a second cosplay in the future though I like some of the alternative cartoons most especially as/when she breaks away from her fairly abusive relationship with the joker. I‘m all about strong female characters! 7y

A young woman living in the 21st century has unusual visions of a woman who escapes her colony after her witch trial ends in a guilty verdict. She falls in love with and marries a young aboriginal man and thus her life completely changes.

These visions lead the woman through years of struggles, fights with European settlers and heartbreak.
