Mirrette on the High Wire is a RF Caldecott winning PB written and Illustrated by Emily Arnold McCully. This is one of the books I read 100x as a child. It‘s a captivating book about an apprentice tight right rope walker named Mirrette. This book is great for PR. You can use this text to enhance fluency and compression skills. My favorite childhood Fairytale: The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Anderson and Illustrated by Jana Christy. This fantasy fairytale TL is a story about a prince trying to find his true princess by seeing if she felt a pea through 20 mattresses! It‘s a fun story for a RA. I would utilize ESL strategy #1 and UDL 8.3 you can cross concept this story with math too. Linked is a lesson plan that has awesome suggestions.

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, Illustrated by Oliver Jeffers is a magical little low fantasy fiction PB that talks about just what the title says: Crayons Quitting! It‘s simply adorable and entertaining and would be great for a DR in a primary classroom. I would have students write from Duncan‘s perspective and then act it out. The Snowy Day written and Illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats is a RF Caldecott winning PB known for its beautiful illustrations. It tells the story of a little boy on enjoying his snow day. This book is great for young readers who need to learn visualizing and vocabulary. It‘s a great text for a read aloud. Life In Motion by Misty Copeland with Brandy Cobert is YA Autobiographical Novel that tells the story of the life of American Ballet Theatres first ever African American principal dancer. The novel takes you through the unlikely success story of one of my biggest female role models. I originally got this book to start a book club at the dance studio I work at. It was a big success! So I recommend a lit circle for this text.

Ella Enchanted is a Fantasy Fiction TL and Newbery award winner by Gail Carlson. It‘s a wonderful story about a girl who is enchanted to do whatever she is told no matter what, the journey lands her in a predicament with her true love but all in all is a happy ending. It would be great for a SR in upper elementary to middle school grades. I would utilize ESL strategy #16 and UDL strategy 2.1 linked below is a great resource for this text.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See by Bill Martin Jr and Illustrated by Eric Carl is a children Fictional PB designed to help primary grade students learn about rhyming and associating colors. This book is perfect for a CR. A Big Mooncake for Little Star written and Illustrated by Grace Lin is a heart warming Fantasy Fiction PB that tells about her cheeky daughter eating the mooncake into the phases of the moon. It‘s a wonderful story that cross concepts with science: perfect for a primary grade RA. I would utilize ESL strategy #24 and UDL 8.2. Here is a resource to go with the text that helps students understand the moon phases.

Island of Blue Dolphins by Scot O Dell... I read this book in 3rd grade and it always stuck out in the forefront of my mind as one of the best books I‘ve ever read. It‘s about a Indian girl who befriends and nurses back to health a wild dog that killed her brother. Their bond lasts a lifetime. Such a memorable story. I would recommend an Author study after reading this book. I would utilize UDL strategy 5.2 and ESL strategy 48

Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena and Illustrated by Christian Robinson is a colorful RF PB that tells a moral tale of CJ and his mother making their way to serve at the soup kitchen. It‘s won many awards including: the Newbery, Caldecott and Coretta Scott king. This book is wonderful for a RA in primary grades. One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams Garcia is a HF Novel that takes you on a 1969 summer vacation of three “colored” girls during the time of the black lives matter civil rights movement. They are placed with their estranged mother who has a secret story all her own. The Author won the Newbery, Coretta Scott King, and Scott O‘Dell awards. This book is wonderful for 5th grade literature circles and cross concepts well with social studies.

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander (Newbery and Coretta Scott King Award winner) is a classic RF novel about two teenage twin boys growing up and trying to find their way though the sport of basketball. This book is great for poetry based compression skills. I would have my student IR this book and review compression skills related to the text within a lesson. The strategies I would use are UDL 3.3 and ESL #9. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen and Illustrated by Dan Hanna is an adorable MF PB that tells the tale of a fish who thinks he‘s destined to be glum. I think if you are sorry enough this book is great for an interactive Story Telling. It‘s also wonderful to teaching about the growth mindset. Grumpy Monkey by: Suzanne Lang and Illustrated by Max Lang is a comical Animal Fantasy book about Mr Grumpy himself: Jim Panzee. This book is awesome for teaching children about handling emotions. Falling up is a page turning poetry book by Shel Silverstein. His illustrations make his witty work come to life! Perfect for young students. This book is great for utilizing PR strategies. The Girl Who Drank the Moon by: Kelly Barnhill is a NY times best seller and Newberry Award winner rightfully so. This MF book takes you through a magical and complicated voyage of how a little girls powers from the moon begin to grow. This book is great for older students to utilize LC‘s. UDL 6.3 goes along with the lesson attached below that encompasses small group story mapping! 🧝🏼‍♀️

Vampirina Ballerina is a MF PB by: Anna Marie Page and Illustrated by: LeUYen Pham. This book explains the struggles of a little vampire girl who wants nothing other than to be a ballerina. Her struggles to fit in come with heartache, but she perseveres. This book is great for a LC lesson. ESL 3 and 2 are great ways for students to turn and talk in small groups about their own personal struggles and growth just like Vampirina! 🧛🏻‍♀️

Josephine (Robert Sibert award + Coretta Scott King award) by: Patricia H Powell and Illustrated by: Christian Robinson is a NF biography that will have you hanging on every word! The book tells the tale of Josephine Bakers uneasy rise to flapper dance stardom. Reading it was an enriching experience. It‘s a great book for vocabulary instruction and cross concepts with social studies. I would do a RA with this book for sure.

Whoever You Are By: Mem Fox and Illustrated by Leslie Staub is a colorful NF picture book that takes you through a journey of diversity. It‘s a wonderful book for teaching young students that although everyone may not look the same, we are all the same on the inside! Pig the Pug is a Fictional book by Aaron Blabey. It tells the tale of a quirky, yet selfish pug who learns the hard way how to share. With a strong message of kindness, this book is perfect for teaching all students CSEFEL otherwise known as social-emotional development strategies. Also great for a RA.
