A Dublin Fairytale | Nicola Colton

A Dublin Fairytale by Nicola Colton is a TL book that is based off of our “Little Red Riding Hood.” This book has the same type of storyline, but uses many landmarks in downtown Dublin throughout the story. I would use this as a RA and I would have students compare this book to our version. #UCFLAE3414SU19 Fun Fact: I got this book and one other while I was in Dublin this summer!

Estradan I like hearing about different TL from other countries. They all have the same twist and meaning but it‘s fun to hear the differences! Your resource would be a fun activity to do in a class! 5y
DrSpalding Fun fact… That‘s awesome that you purchased some international traditional literature on your trip. There are so many versions of the stories around the world that children could be exposed to! Make sure you elaborate on your universal design principles and English learner strategies. 5y

Students that love animals would enjoy reading this fact filled book about them! Ride, Fly Guy, Ride! By Ted Arnold is a MF about a fly that takes a trip to many different places after flying out of the car window. This is one of the books in the New York Times Bestselling Series! Students will love this funny character. I would use it as an IR. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a RF tear-jerker that won the #1 New York Times Bestseller. The story is about a young girl named Hazel that has a terminal brain tumor. She soon meets a man named Augustus, her world flips upside down. I would use this as an IR or PR, depending on the student. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Giver by Lois Lowry is a SF book that won the 1994 Newberry Medal. I would use this book as a LC so students could share what they think as they read. This book is about a utopian society that doesn‘t turn out to be the way it seems. Jonah has been selected to receive special training. What will he do with this power? #UCFLAE3414SU19

Kendylleonard The resource I found is from Scholastic. The lesson involves students learning about the plot of the story and its specific parts. What I also like about the lesson plan is that it has a writing element to it where students created another “final chapter” of the book! Also, this book has been made into a movie. So I would definitely show that so they can make the comparison between the book and the movie. 5y
DrSpalding Creating an alternative final chapter is an excellent idea for this particular novel. Lowry received a hate mail for how she ended this book which inevitably lead to her writing three more in this quartet. 5y

A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein is a P based book that provides poems of all different sorts. This book was the New York Times Bestseller in 1981. This would be great to use when introducing students to all different types of poetry as either a RA or IR! #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo is a RF book that I would use as an IR or LC. It was the National Book Award Finalist in 2001. The story is about a boy named Rob that finds a tiger locked in a cage in the middle of the woods. He meets a girl named Sistine, and they must learn how to work together and trust each other. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a MF story about a girl named Luna. She was raised by a witch after accidentally being fed moonlight. The witch is now dying, and Luna needs to figure out how to work her magic, quickly. This book won the 2017 Newberry Medal! I would use it for a LC or IR, depending on the age of your students. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is a RF book that has won the 2015 Newberry Medal and Coretta Scott King. This coming of age poetic novel is about two twin boys that are having some trouble as one brother starts to like a girl at school. These tiffs start to effect how the boys play basketball and their home life. I would use this book as an IR or a RA, depending on the reading level and age of your students. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a MF that I would use as an AS or S. It won the New York Times Outstanding Book Award in 1974. The book is about a young boy that loves to play with the trees and constantly takes the things he needs from it as he is growing up, until the tree can‘t give anymore. The resource I found is the authors website. It gives many lessons and activities for students to participate in. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Giraffes Can‘t Dance by Giles Andreae is a MF that I would use as RA in the classroom, especially if I was having any bullying issues. The story is about a giraffe that can‘t dance, and all of the other animals make fun of him, until he figures out that he can dance! The resource I found is a lesson plan from the publisher, Scholastic. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The Peace Tree from Hiroshima is a HF book about a tree that survived the bombing of Hiroshima. The family is learning new secrets about the bombing and how it affected them throughout the story. I would use this book as RA to discuss the historical events of what happens throughout the book. The resource I found is an easy breakdown of what took place in WWII so students will have some background information on what happened. #UCFLAE3414SU19

The UDL I would use is 1.3 I would pull up a map and show students where the war took place. I would also use ESOL strategy #42 so students can see how and when the war was happening. (edited) 5y
DrSpalding I am guessing you found this in the CMC, correct? I have added this to my stack. I have mentioned Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes… These two books would make for excellent text to text connections. YES... to pulling up a world map and sharing geographical information with your students. Whenever you can embed these skills as they apply, do it! 5y

Three Little Cajun Pigs by Mike Artell is a TL spin off of the original tale of Three Little Pigs. This story uses a southern-creole spin to the story. The funniest part of all? The big bad wolf is a, GATOR! Students will enjoy reading this classic tale while learning about other cultures. I would use this in the classroom as a S. The resource I found was a comparison of the actual tale of the Three Little Pigs to this version. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Peaceful Protest: The Life of Nelson Mandela by Yona Zeldis McDonough, is a B that can be used for a RT for older students or a RA. This book includes all of the important facts and great achievements of Nelson Mandela. The resource I found is an interactive kids website to find more information about who Nelson Mandela is and how he is seen as a hero. I would use this resource for older students, as it is slightly text heavy. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Thank You, Mr. Falker is a RF book by Patricia Polacco that some students can really relate to. I would use it for an IR or PR. The book portrays a young girl that has dyslexia and can‘t figure out how to read. She deals with bullies and many other challenges in school, until she meets Mr. Falker. The resource I found gives fun printables and activities for students to use after reading the story. #UCFLAE3414SU19

I would use UDL 1.1 to change the display of information for some students. Leprechaun in Late Winter | Mary Pope Osborne

#43 of the Magic Tree House Series, Leprechaun in Late Winter by Mary Pope Osbourne would be a great book to use for an LC or even an IR. In this book, Jack and Annie travel to Ireland to help a young girl find her purpose, while running into a few issues along the way. Students love this series and would most likely love to take part in reading it. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Kendylleonard I would use UDL 6.2 for their LC as the students will develop a plan of how to keep track of reading. The ESOL strategy that would also align would be #10. When conducting an LC group, they will need to share thoughts and ideas of what has happened so far. The resource I found links this book to a math lesson for students. This would be great to implement because they could read this book with their LC‘s, and also see it cross-curriculum 5y

Hooway for Wodney Wat | Helen Lester, Lynn Munsinger

Hooway for Wodney Wat by Helen Lester would be great for a S if time is available, or even just for a RA. The MF story is about a rat named Rodney that has a speech impediment. It‘s a classic story based on bullying and it teaches a great lesson for young readers. This book has been given an award by the American Library Association for a Notable Children‘s Book. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Kendylleonard I would use UDL 8.3 to foster collaboration by having students complete a S scene. If You Give a Mouse a Brownie by Laura Numeroff would be a great book for an AS. The series has become a #1 New York Times Bestseller. The MF book is part of a series that uses a mouse to constantly ask requests from a young boy. Each book has the same storyline, but with a different animal. It would be great book to teach sequence of events and complete an in depth author study to compare what happens in each book. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a NF that has won the Booklist Editor‘s Choice Children‘s Book award. This fun and engaging book that teaches students many facts about all types animals big and small would be great for a RA. I found a link that provides us with ways to implement this story in every subject area. I thought it was a great resource to bring this book into each lesson. #UCFLAE3414SU19

I would satisfy the UDL 3.1 by activating students background knowledge while asking questions regarding their previous experiences with these animals. I would use ESOL strategy #22 by allowing students to stop and think about the questions I ask them throughout the story, and giving them enough time to come up with their own answers.
