I have some very creative and artistic Kindergarten students this year!!

In this story, poor Gerald the Giraffe just can‘t dance! All the other jungle animals seem to have great moves. Why can‘t he dance like them?

Young readers learn you just need to find the music that‘s right for you! Very sweet, and I love reading this aloud and interacting with my class for this one.

ravenlee I always loved reading this with my daughter! 5y

Giraffes Can‘t Dance by Giles Andreae is a MF that I would use as RA in the classroom, especially if I was having any bullying issues. The story is about a giraffe that can‘t dance, and all of the other animals make fun of him, until he figures out that he can dance! The resource I found is a lesson plan from the publisher, Scholastic. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Kendylleonard https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/giraffes-cant-.... The UDL I would use is 1.2 because the lesson allows students to come up with their own rhymes. I would use ESOL strategy #20 as it will help students find the words they need to use in order to make their sentences rhyme. 5y
Macker11 I love this book and the resource that you chose to go along with it! It would be a good way to discuss being friendly as you stated, allowing kids to be kind to all that are around them no matter what they can or can‘t do. 5y
SarynaN Love that you related the book to a specific behavioral problem you might experience in the classroom! Also making it a read aloud makes sure that it is inclusive for all students. 5y
Kendylleonard @Macker11 @SarynaN I love this book because it teaches a great lesson! What‘s better than a book on kindness! 5y
DrSpalding This would be an excellent read aloud however I have seen it as a storytelling as well with music… Fabulous! 5y

Kayladvazquez The art activity you added is super cute and would go along great with this book. I love this book I read it to my four-year-old class all the time. It really teaches children to get up and keep trying and if they do so they will succeed. 6y
gergana08 This book is inspiring to young children since it teaches the kids to keep trying. It‘s great theme to help student understand that sometimes you have to try something many times before you accomplish your goal. 6y

This book has ways been my favorite book growing up. The rhythm of the words and vibrant pictures keep the audience engaged and excited to read. The message is absolutely beautiful and it represents the importance of individuality. This book would be wonderful to read to an early childhood classroom to talk about individuality and bullying in a safe, organic way.

This has quite an intricate plot for a board book and it kept Jace‘s attention the entire time (no easy feat right before nap time!). It also teaches a good lesson to just be yourself and do your thing. Love this, it‘s going on Jace‘s wishlist. 5⭐️

This NYT best seller and modern fantasy (F) by Giles Andrea is about a giraffe that thinks he cannot dance because he doesn‘t dance like the other animals. Gerald was a tall giraffe who‘s neck and legs were very long. The animals made fun of him but he didn‘t care. He leapt in the air! A sweet rhyming story about accepting our differences. #UCFLAE3414SP18

AndreaG This looks like a sweet book. In the age of teaching kids to “choose kind,” this book could be an early influence on kids to be kind tone another. 7y
JenniferMc @AndreaG I agree. So many great discussions could come from this book. Inclusion, “choose kind” and “ don‘t judge a book by it‘s cover”, to name a few. 7y

Giraffes Can‘t Dance is MF F about Gerald the giraffe that longs to dance, but his legs are too skinny, and his neck is too long. This book would be best utilized as a RA to your students followed by this activity http://readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/using-picture-books-e... after listening to the RA students will discuss stereotypes and the limitations people put on Gerald. Using UDL guidelines 3.2 & 8.1

Ryanne.H Students will discuss the main idea of the story and highlight how Gerald overcame his obstacles and accomplished his goals. For ESOL strategies 18 & 24 students can dance the cha cha when the chimps in story do activating their gross motor skills, and the examples of dancing in the book can relate to any Latin ESOL students in the classroom. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
LisaMart @Ryanne.H great post! I love a book that could incorporate dancing! Have to check this one out! 7y

Giraffes can‘t Dance is a children‘s fiction book written by Giles Andreae about a giraffe named Gerald who decides to go to the Jungle Dance, but once he steps on the dance floor, the other animals laugh at him. Gerald is comfortable to dance after talking to a cricket who believes in him. I like this children‘s book because it has a good moral to it but still entertaining. #UCFWaltersLit -fiction

We were chuckling at the giraffe leaning in for a drink at the zoo today - and all I can think of is Giraffes Can't Dance! They're such funny, ungainly creatures!

This cute fiction picture book by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Guy Parker Rees is a great addition to any elementary class room library. It is a great book to use for a growth mindset lesson. It teaches children the power of the word "yet". It can be used with the standards UDL 8.3 and ESOL 3. #UCFLAE3414F17 https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/giraffes-cant-...

DrSpalding Be sure to incorporate a resource along with how you would use this book in your classroom. Refer to the rubric. Keep going! 7y

Reading some of Kaysen's new books to her before bed, and I have to say I LOVE this quote! Although she did not like this as much as "Are you my Mother?", that is mostly because Mommy can do better sound effects with latter. I think she will really enjoy this one when she is a little bit older. Great book with wonderful lessons in it. ??

Another one of my favorite children's books. The story of Gerald the Giraffe who was mocked for not dancing like the rest of the animals. He goes on to find his own music and dance his own way. I tear up every time I read, "sometimes when you're different, you just need a different song". Rock on..
