The Doorbell Rang | Pat Hutchins
post image
Pickpick

The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins is a cool RF read that will keep you guessing as to who will show up at the door next. It also contains a good message about sharing. I would use this book as a RA. I would use ESOL strategy 15 by reinforcing the key ideas. I would use UDL 2.5 and illustrate through multiple media.

jmartucci This website has some cute resources that would be nice for a young class.

Bshelton27 I LOVE this story. I really like the activity you attached as well. I think it is a great math lesson for the younger grades. I think visuals are important so I like how kids can transfer each cookie to the plate. 5y
DrSpalding This is an excellent book to incorporate into a math lesson. Helpful resource and appropriate strategies. 5y

The Crossover | Kwame Alexander
post image
Pickpick

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is a RF story, and John Newberry Medal winner about twin brothers that want to play basketball. The unique way of writing could be a good way to incorporate it into a poetry lesson. This would also be a great LC book for the students to discuss; many would probably be able to relate to the story. I would use ESOL strategy 2 and promote cooperation in small groups.

jmartucci I would use UDL 3.1 and activate their background knowledge. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=38077. I would use this website which has some nice resources available. #ucflae3414su19 5y
Stephanie5 I loved reading this book! Especially during the death in a family. (edited) 5y
DrSpalding English learner strategy number two is perfect for literature circles! I am glad you enjoyed this and would consider using it in a future classroom. Do it!🏀 5y

Allies, by Alan Gratz is a HF story about where different people were during D-Day. It is a good book for older students to read that can tie in with a history lesson. I would use this book as a LC for the
students to get together and discuss.
https://www.nationalww2museum.org/students-teachers/educator-resources/classroom.... This website contains some valuable resources to be used in conjunction with the book.

jmartucci I would use ESOL strategy 6 and continually
monitor the student‘s comprehension. I would use UDL 7.1 and optimize individual choice so the students could pick something they are interested in. #ucflae3414su19

DrSpalding Your resource is fantastic! You are correct that this would be for intermediate if not middle school readers. This particular author has several titles that are getting a lot of attention! 5y

René Has Two Last Names, by René Colato Laínez is a smart RF bilingual book for children. It depicts the issues the other went through by having two last names. On the pages, it is written in English and Spanish. It has won a few awards. It is partially based on the author‘s life. I would use the RA strategy. I would use this website because it has some cool resources.

jmartucci https://sites.google.com/site/renecolatolainez/rene-has-two-last-names--for-teac.... I would use ESOL strategy 24 and incorporate the language of second

Me…Jane, by Patrick McDonnell is a wonderful B read. This book is a winner of a Caldecott Honor award. The pictures in this book are simple and sweet. DrSpalding Of course you could include this as an independent reading option in your classroom library however you will need to teach about historical figures and knowing that she has ties to the science community, you could share information about her through great books during a science unit! 5y

Hare and Tortoise | Alison Murray
post image
Pickpick

Hare and Tortoise by Alison Murray is a great TL story that would be a nice lesson for the classroom. Of course, it tells how slow and steady can still win the race and you don‘t have to be the fastest. I would use the strategy of RA, so the students can all listen and discuss when the story is done.
http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/60046. The UDL I would use is 3.3, guide information processing and visualization.

jmartucci I would use ESOL strategy 10 and have them use think, pair, share to discuss the story. #ucflae3414su19 5y
Estradan The resource you provided is great for 1st graders to learn about fables and learn about characters. The ESOL strategy you aligned it with fits perfectly with this resource because it‘ll give students to discuss what they thought the message of the story was. 5y
alexialovesmith This book would make a perfect read aloud. I used to love this story as a child, so giving students the opportunity to listen and then discuss it with one another is awesome! 5y
DrSpalding Going straight to our department of education website is a smart move Jaclyn. I‘m adding this version to my stack. Quality traditional literature and current variants are excellent read aloud‘s in the primary classroom. 5y

Zathura: A Space Adventure | Chris Van Allsburg

Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg is a cool SF book. It is about brothers who play a game that take them to space. The drawings are amazing. I would present this book as a PR, and two people can take turns reading as the brothers. This website is a teacher‘s guide to reading this book in class, which would be very useful. http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/thepolarexpress/tg/zathura.shtml

jmartucci I would use the ESOL strategy 2 to encourage cooperation and small groups. I would use UDL 3.1 and activate their background knowledge about having siblings or friends that they interact with. #ucflae3414su19 5y

My Teacher Is a Monster! (No, I Am Not.), by Peter Brown, is a wonderful MF story for the classroom. It is about how a student sees their teacher as a monster, but slowly starts to see them differently when he runs into her outside of school. This video would be a nice contribution for the story to be RA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m74FqMU7qBs

jmartucci I would use ESOL strategy 10, to think, pair and share strategies to help them discuss the book. I would use UDL 2.1 to clarify vocabulary and symbols for the students. A fun activity for them might be to make paper airplanes like in the book. #ucflae3414su19 5y
LibrarianRyan I love this book. 5y
MeganKlein @jmartucci, I‘ve been wanting to read this book ever since I read the Q&A article about Peter Brown! Looking forward to reading this text and possibly owning it in my own classroom library one day! 5y

Last Stop on Market Street, by Matt De La Peña, was a very sweet RF read that would be good as a RA. It was about a boy realizing the beauty around him with the help of his grandma. It won multiple awards, such as the Caldecott Honor, John Newberry Medal, and the Coretta Scott King award. This website had some nice lesson plans to
use.

jmartucci I would use ESOL strategy 1, teach questioning for clarification, and encourage the students to ask questions about what is happening. UDL 9.3, develop self-assessment and reflection, and allow the students to think about a time when they‘ve helped others. #ucflae3414su19 5y

Mr Tiger Goes Wild | Peter Brown
post image
Pickpick

Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, by Peter Brown, is such a beautiful MF book. The pictures were amazing and it won the Golden Kite Award. It is about a tiger who lives with all the other animals in the city and one day decides that he wants to live in the woods. This book would be fun as a DR, allowing the students to act it out and enjoy themselves.

jmartucci You can activate background knowledge (UDL 3.1) by asking the students if they‘ve ever seen these animals anywhere, like the zoo. ESOL strategy 4, link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge, allows the students to recognize they already have some understanding. This website has some fun activities for this book.

Boats Float! by George Ella Lyon is a quick NF read about boats. It talks about all the different kinds of boats that exist. This book would be best RA so the students can see all the pictures. This website can be used for students to try their hand at making their own boats that float. file:///C:/Users/Administrator/Downloads/K-Float%20the%20Boat(6).pdf

jmartucci UDL 5.2, use tools for construction, would involve the students getting to build some boats. They could work together which would promote cooperation (ESOL 2). #ucflae3414su19 5y
DrSpalding Your resource is not hyperlinked however this book would be an excellent book prior to a sink or float science lesson. Good books can be used to teach so many things! Use them! 5y

At the Crossroads | Rachel Isadora
post image
Pickpick

At The Crossroads, by Rachel Isadora, is a sweet RF story to be read in class. It is about a South African village waiting for their fathers to come home from the mines. There is a part where the children are making music, so I would use ESOL strategy 17, using audio and body language for support, and let the students also make music. I would use this website that shows us how to make instruments
in the classroom.

jmartucci https://feltmagnet.com/crafts/Music-Instruments-for-Kids-to-Make. UDL 3.1, activate background knowledge, would be implemented by asking students if they remember a time when they were waiting for a parent or guardian to come home from somewhere. I would use RT to get the students involved and use their homemade instruments. #ucflae3414su19 5y
DrSpalding I love the idea of having students make their own instruments! This author has a current book titled Islandborn that is on my to be purchased list! What a wonderful way to incorporate the arts while using quality literature. 5y

It depicts her hunt for her new friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzMZMYdfrFQ is a cute video that can be played in the classroom. I would use ESOL strategy 20, and list some important words on the board for the students.

jmartucci I would use UDL 7.3, to minimize distractions and keep the students focused on the book. I would have the students do PR, so they could take turns reading to each other. #ucflae3414su19 5y
LibrarianRyan love this book 5y
DrSpalding Pre-teaching vocab you Larry, as you know is very important. Again your author study resource could be an excellent addition to this post. Knowing that you have followers outside of our class, it could be a helpful tool for in-service teachers. 5y

The Popcorn Shop | Alice Low, Patricia Hammel

The Popcorn Shop, by Alice Low, is a cute poetry story about having too much popcorn. This website has some nice ideas on how to incorporate a lesson plan alongside this short book.
https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/popcorn-shop-d...
I would use the storytelling strategy so the students could hear the rhyming out loud, plus I think it would be fun to also include popcorn snacks for the students.

jmartucci UDL 3.2, highlight patterns and big ideas, is reinforced with the rhyming pattern and ESOL 17, provides support through body language and facial expressions that can be used. #ucflae3414su19 5y

Arthur, Clean Your Room, by Marc Brown, is a silly and short RF read for young students. It tells the story of Arthur, who decides to have a garage sale but ends up trading everything and ending with the same amount of stuff in his room. The UDL is provide options for physical action (4) by letting the students perform this as a Readers Theatre, which would be fun for the students.

jmartucci ESOL strategy 18, using directions that involve student actions as in Total Physical Response,
would work in regards to acting out the story. This website has a variety of math problems involving Arthur and his friends if we wanted to involve math. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/161707442851289850/
#ucflae3414su19

Kendylleonard I‘m not sure if kids today still watch Arthur, but if they knew this character, it would be even more of a reason to have this book in our classroom library. They could make the connection between this at-home character, and seeing him in school! I also love that your resource encompasses math! 5y
DrSpalding Hmmmmm... not RF. Look at the front cover. If you only heard the story and did not see the images, you would think it was realistic fiction however animals don‘t wear clothes and talk… What genre is it? 5y

Creepy Carrots, by Aaron Reynolds, a MF story and winner of a Caldecott honor, was a great story! This is a story about a young rabbit named Jasper who loves carrots and eats them all the time- until the day the carrots start following him. Students will love getting to see the beautiful drawings as it is RA to them.

jmartucci ESOL strategy 20 could be used, listing some important words on the board since there may be a few tricky ones for students to understand. A UDL strategy used could be to guide information processing and visualization (3.3). This captivating reading of Creepy Carrots would be very fun to play in the classroom! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JHtihBb34 #ucflae3414su19 5y

This MF story, winner of a Caldecott honor, by Mo Willems is such a fun read! This is a silly story about a pigeon being very eager to drive the bus while the driver is away. He really wants to do it and he asks the students reading if he can! This book would be best RA while using ESOL strategy 16, integrating reading and writing activities, pulled from Mo Willems website http://pigeonpresents.com/get-busy/.

jmartucci UDL 2.1, clarify vocab and symbols can help students by looking at the pictures and the teachers pointing out vocab. #ucflae3414su19 5y
Macker11 I have yet to read a pigeon book, but it seems with the interaction to the reader that it is a good read for students! I think finding a clever and appropriate book for students to read is a great asset to the classroom library. I like how your resource already had teacher guides to use for this book! 5y
