In his characteristic heartwarming style, Patrick McDonnell tells the story of the young Jane Goodall and her special childhood toy chimpanzee named Jubilee. As the young Jane observes the natural world around her with wonder, she dreams of "a life living with and helping all animals," until one day she finds that her dream has come true. One of the world's most inspiring women, Dr. Jane Goodall is a renowned humanitarian, conservationist, animal activist, environmentalist, and United Nations Messenger of Peace. In 1977 she founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), a global nonprofit organization that empowers people to make a difference for all living things. With anecdotes taken directly from Jane Goodall's autobiography, McDonnell makes this very true story accessible for the very young--and young at heart.

Me…Jane tells the semi-true story of Jane, a young girl with a passion for animals and wildlife. The book tells of the wonders of curiosity and following one‘s passion and dreams.
This book would be perfect for launching a unit about jungle animals and nature, leading to a discussion to see what students are interested in.

“Me...Jane“ is a great book to use with any aged children as it gives a beginning insight into who Jane Goodall is. This can be used when talking about her and her amazing work with chimpanzees, but it also just has a great theme about following your dreams will eventually get you exactly where you want to be.

I can think of two ways this book would be good to use in a classroom, first I would use it on a unit for science about exploration and inquiry, this book shows who Jane has questions and she explores to find the answers. I would also use this book as a lesson on following your dreams and working towards your goals, the book shows Jane dreaming of working with chimpanzees as a young girl then accomplishing this dream at the end of the story.

Me...Jane is a B picture book written and illustrated by Patrick McDonnell. I think it would be best used as a RA in a classroom grades K-3. It won the Caldecott Medal in 2012 and the Charlotte Zolotow Award in 2012. This book follows the childhood of Jane Goodall and her toy chimpanzee, Jubilee. It shows how she came to be the conservationist everyone knows her to be. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin The EL strategy I would use for this book is 20, list the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard. This is important so the students can reference these whenever you mention them in the book or during the lesson. They have the visual there with the information they need in order to maximize their comprehension. 5y
katiehamlin The UDL principle I would use for this book is 7.2, optimize relevance, value, and authenticity. You can show students how relevant Jane Goodall‘s life is to theirs by explaining the impact she has had on the environmental and conservational world. This will help students realize how important she was, how important the work she did was, and how it is relevant to their life. This will cause them to pay attention more and increase comprehension. 5y
katiehamlin The resource I would use for this book is https://www.ducksters.com/biography/scientists/jane_goodall.php . It‘s a cute little page that has more information on Jane Goodall‘s life, and even includes a short ten question quiz students can take at the end to see how much they‘ve learned! 5y

This 2012 Caldecott winner, B book follows a little girl named Jane who loves learning about nature and wildlife. She loved the story of Tarzan and Jane and is fascinated by Africa. She dreams of going to Africa, and then does when she grows up, because she‘s Jane Goodall! This book would be great for CR and PR. #UCFLAE3414F19

JennaMichelleCohn UDL 3.1, “activate or supply background knowledge” would work here since Jane Goodall is a really great person to learn about. ESOL strategy 4, “link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge,” would work as well, along with 28, “provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries,” because Jane Goodall was originally from London. 5y
