Where the Sidewalk Ends is one of my favorite P anthologies of all time. As a child I would spend hours reading over each of his fun poems. This could be a useful book to use for RT or AS. The poems in this book will bring a smile to children of all ages.

Make Way for Ducklings is the 1942 recipient of the Caldecott Medal and is TL. In this timeless piece, we get to watch the life of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard as they make a life and family in Boston. Follow the Mallard family as they try to make their journey to the Public Garden is this adorable story. This is a great book to use in your classroom for S. Students in lower elementary as well as upper elementary levels will enjoy this fun book.

The Giver | Lois Lowry

The Giver is a SF and is the recipient of the 1994 Newbery award. This novel follows a young boy named Jonas as he grows in a society that has taken away emotional depth in all of it's people. Given the job of the Receiver of Memory, Jonas grapples with emotions and concepts he never knew before. The first of three novels, we follow Jonas as he is forced to make decisions for the better or the Community. This book is a great choice for PR.

Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle

A Wrinkle in Time is a Newbery Honor recipient and is a SF novel. This novel follows Meg, her brother Charles, and friend Calvin as they search for her missing father. Together these three children and three supernatural women who take them on a journey to bring back Alexander. Students will learn the power of unconditional love and how it can overpower darkness and hate. This is a great book to use in a classroom in LC.

El Deafo is NF Newbery Award Recipient. In this sweet graphic novel, we follow Cece as she journeys through life and school with the assistance of her hearing aid. Cece begins to use her deafness as her “super-power,“ sometimes she can hear things she isn't supposed to hear and this is her power! Through this book, Cece grows more confident and finds a true friend who later turns into her sidekick. This is a fun book to use in class for IR.

On My Honor | Marion Dane Bauer

On My Honor is a Newbery honor recipient. In this heartbreaking tale, Joel struggles with his need to please his father and wanting to impress his best friend. He soon discovers there are consequences to his actions, and sometimes rules are there for a reason. In this short but impactful text, your students will be holding on to the edge of their seat until the end. This is a great text to use as a RA or in a LC.

Smile by Raina Telgemeier is a NF graphic novel about a middle school girl who has to work through a personal crisis. After Girl Scout camp, Raina suffers a freak accident where she severely damages her two front teeth. This graphic novel follows Raina all through middle school to tenth grade as she struggles with friends, boys, and surgery. This is a great book to introduce as a IR to students about to enter middle school.

gabbymartin @apeacock12 I've never seen that award before! Nor have I heard of the book! It looks and sounds like something that would be perfect for a 5th grade independent read or even a literature circle, to promote discussion about personal crises which can really benefit the classroom at that age. Can't wait to check out this book! 5y

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a NF book that follows Auggie and his journey through middle school. He has a medical condition which makes his face appear different than other students. This book follows his journey as well as the lives of those he is closest to. Students will learn the importance of compassion and empathy, and how being a good friend can go a long way. This is a great book to use in your classroom as a RA.

While this lesson plan is centered around Georgia standards, this is a great lesson plan to use as inspiration in your classroom. This satisfies ESOL strategy 5 and and UDL 7.2. This is an amazing book to use in your classroom to educate your students that sometimes your outlook on life determines your happiness, not your circumstances.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is a timeless TL book that follows Dorothy and Toto as they meet new friends and overcome obstacles on their way to the city of Oz. Each character in this story represents different fears and hopes. This is a great book to introduce to your classroom as it shows the battle of good and evil, and sometimes being who you truly are is the best person to be. This is a great book to use in a classroom for RA

Looking for Alaska by John Green is the 2006 Michael L. Printz award winner, it is RF. This book follows Miles, Alaska, and their friends as they navigate their ways through high school. In this heartbreaking story, Miles learns about love, loss, and forgiveness. This would be a great book to use in a classroom as a IR or PR selection.

Last Stop on Market Street is a RF by Matt De La Peña illustrated by Christian Robinson. It is a Newberry Medal winner, Caldecott Honor Book, and a Coretta Scott King Award honoree. This is a story that follows CJ and his grandma on their Sunday bus ride across town. As CJ questions why certain things in his life are the way they are, the people on the bus and his grandmother help him see the good around him. This is a great book to use for RA.

They get to meet the President, and have to help save the nation. This is a great book to read the week of Abraham Lincolns birthday (February 12). This is a great book to use as a IR.

They must help the child before they all die from the sinking of the Titanic. This is a great read for students or help see how the Titanic may have been like for the people on it. This is a great book choice for IR.

The Popcorn Astronauts is a P written by Deborah Ruddell and illustrated by Joan Rankin. This is a collection of different poems and rhymes that can be fun to use in your classroom. Students can have fun reading this silly poems through shared readings or RT. Some fun activity ideas are having students pick poems to act out and recite to the class.

This books tells the amazing life of Harvey Milk and the work he did for the LGBTQ+ community. It tells of his work along with the I legacy he left behind. This is a great book to use during Pride Month for your students, especially in October if you live in Orlando when Orlando Pride is celebrated.

This is a creepy story that follows Jasper Rabbit who is being chased by creepy carrots! Students will love this creepy tale and will have fun trying to figure out what‘s going to happen next. The story follows a silverback gorilla named Ivan who is living in a cage at the mall. He lives together with two elephants and a dog who also lives in the mall. This is a heartwarming story of his journey to find a better life for him and his friends. This is a great choice for RA.
