Really ??? This was shortlisted for the women‘s prize ? I bought it after listening to a book tuber comparing the authors writing to Sarah waters. Sorry no ! First half is just boring , admittedly it does pick up and has a great twist at the end but sadly not worthy of more stars from me !

what a winner! Alongside highwages, to bed with grand music, the homemaker & someone from a distance this is in my favourite Persephone reads, actually I think it is my favourite. Iv tried to tag everyone in the group onto this and it wouldn‘t let me post came up with an error code … anyway the way the author captures the complexities of families , the different personalities the clashes the matriarchs of each clan -Mrs fowler & Mrs Willoughby 👇

Bookbuyingaddict Is just wonderful writing ✍️ anyone who loves family dynamics and drama will love this, not one of them has a truly happy marriage and no particular style of parenting is correct. Belle has become one of my most hated fictional characters she is awful 😣 she‘s totally unhinged & poor Gillian! As a mother in modern day she‘d be reported to child services! It‘s also a snapshot of life between the wars in a British town, a way of life which …. 3d
Bookbuyingaddict No longer exists. I looked up on Wikipedia the list of the authors published works , I enjoyed this so much I‘d love to read her others & I agree with @andrew61 😀very similar to my beloved cazalet chronicles - if you haven‘t read those YOU MUST they kept me going through lockdown , what a treasure trove to discover when we couldn‘t go out! Relaxing in the hairdressers half way into this little treat , poor poor juno. I‘m really surprised this book has such low ratings on all the main apps, perhaps 🤔 too many trigger warnings for modern sensibilities? Personally I think the writing is excellent : Mary Wesley reminds me of Elizabeth Jane Howard. Our young protagonist, juno is a victim of spoilt rich male cousins, frowned upon by their cruel mothers & ignored by her own, but is

A very very slow paced story compared to the wonderful small pleasures which was one of my favourite books of the year when it was published. Sadly this one is lacking , I found the plot slow and boring the main protagonist as dull as dish water Helen not William . The author based the story on a real life event from the 50s which is terribly sad , at least this man got a happy ending but overall found it lacking #readinginthebath

Cathythoughts Oh dear ! I‘ve just started and I‘m already agreeing with you. I loved Small Pleasures too. I‘ll give this one up to page 100 …. And then decide. 3w

Well that was a strange one , brilliantly translated, gothic horror , haunted house, thriller and possibly the closest thing Iv read that compares to an early Stephen king. Again alittle over long over descriptive in places but a unique different story to any other horror / gothic / thriller Iv read.

Just had to share this hilarious 🤣 text from one of my dear true soul sister buddies BFFs , she does make me laugh 🤭 but my goodness it is scary isn‘t it ? We have real life lex Luther‘s 😨😱😱😱😱

Jari-chan Really, really scary. But the text made me laugh, which is nice 😊 1mo
wanderinglynn That‘s so scarily true. 1mo
Suet624 I think it was John Stewart or Stephen Colbert who showed a parade of billionaires at the inauguration with bald heads. Totally looked like Lex Luther. And I've been saying for a while that this reality feels so dark & menacing, like Superwoman, Batman or Superman movies, and where the heck are the heroes? I guess it's just not dark enough for them to appear yet, but the Bishop of the Washington National Cathedral certainly came close yesterday. 1mo

Chelsea.Poole The thing that is the scariest is that so many people are tricked into thinking that those *are* the heroes. 🤯 Downright terrifying. I‘ve had some good threads going as well with my close family and soul sisters which have also made me chuckle at his expense. Necessary. 1mo

Reading is such a personal thing some people hate this some like it wouldn‘t say anyone loves it , after watching a lot of Shakespeare recently at the RSC in Stratford upon Avon I bought this book there intrigued to find out more about Shakespeares dark lady Emilia bassano,100 odd pages in & chapters in Emilia‘s timeline I‘m so far enjoying but why the modern twist with Melina in manhattan?why didn‘t picoults editor tell her to ditch these parts?

Bookbuyingaddict At 13 Emilia‘s basically being groomed to become a courtesan to Lord Hudson who is 43 years older 🤮🤮yes this makes me want to throw up ! It‘s so sad 😢 I wish I could say that over 500 years later things have changed , but they haven‘t , the world over girls & women are still abused and sexually exploited & innocent and freedom forcibly taken - no wonder these days we want to read something lighter no wonder fantasy is doing so well ! Mollie moonbeam (that is her actual kennel name 😆) and I have been lucky enough to receive an ARC of broken country & WOW 😮 a debut!it is fantastic.A love triangle, a reflection on grief, the age old question of can you be in love with 2 people at once? And a thriller/crime to boot, 76%into & it will be one of my favourite books of ‘25 already.not published here until March il be buying copies for myself & my friends. Compared to paper palace …..

USA 🇺🇸 and UK 🇬🇧 will have different jackets/covers I think 🤔 publishers have got this cover with the bird on completely wrong 😑 it doesn‘t do the book justice - I do prefer the cover with the farm house on but still alittle lacking for such a wonderful debut. Well I‘m not working as I‘m poorly 🤒 winter ❄️ bugs here In UK 🇬🇧 plus I mixed a lot in December ! Anyway that means time to be cosy with my fur babies/ twins and binge read book 3 the brilliant 🤩 fire.Equally as disturbing but so well written don‘t be put off ! How characters are linked from each novella to the next is masterful im just sad about poor old Evan‘s outcome. Anyway now we have to wait until May for book 4 Aaron‘s story……..

Bookbuyingaddict ….. I‘m just hoping that out of all the characters Aaron turns out to be the good guy of the bunch . Writing about the dark side of human nature and just had plan evil humans can be is not easy and we see these crimes all around us which breaks my heart, but John Boyne has a way of writing that makes it gripping and necessary in explaining these traits.how do we find out about human nature and different life‘s if we don‘t read ? DogMomIrene I‘ve only gotten 3 hours of sleep. Trying to force myself to turn off Morning Joe and bury myself in my book. I share all of your concerns plus the Supreme Court is lost. 4mo

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Women deserve better. My nieces deserve better. My friends of color deserve better. Vance thinks us childless dog ladies have nothing to live for. I do, and I'll go down swinging as the shit hits the fan. 4mo

Omg poor Ukraine , poor world he‘s such a wild card iritic politics Wer all screwed.heart broken for America 🇺🇸 for us all 😭😭

Bookbuyingaddict Over here they‘re saying Americans have voted for him because he‘s promised cheaper fuel cheaper groceries and no immigration 🤯 Wer all paying more all economy‘s are fragile the world over. Its a sad sad day , I won‘t be coming to the USA next year then 😢 4mo
MysticFaerie I'm so sorry. 4mo
Suet624 I am devastated and in complete disbelief. Been crying for a good hour. There is not one section of America that will not suffer as a result. I just had no idea there were so many people who prefer hate. I think Russia‘s invasion of the US is complete. (edited) 4mo

Eggbeater I feel that. 4mo
Chelsea.Poole @Bookbuyingaddict yes that‘s correct, where I live 80% voted for him. The people I know personally believe he will lower the prices at the grocery store. It‘s horrible — this is the outcome I was dreading and expecting. 4mo
OriginalCyn620 I can‘t believe it. Me and my husband went to Ireland in June, and we‘ve been semi joking about retiring there when the time comes. I‘d love to bump that plan up and just move now! 4mo
Bookbuyingaddict If we get Nigel farage in I‘m moving to a pacific island , oh American 🇺🇸 my heart weeps for you .Russia and North Korea are delighted , poor Ukraine 🇺🇦 😭. I cannot believe that people cannot see he has clear autocratic sympathies 😭😭😭😭 4mo

Cuilin @CBee @Suet624 I need to convince my daughters and their boyfriends. 4mo
AmyG @Chelsea.Poole I truly believe most people only see themselves. And with that said, they voted for him on the hopes it will help the economy for them…forget everything he says and all the hate. People thought it would be women and choice. It was the economy. 4mo
Chelsea.Poole @AmyG whatever it takes for the almighty dollar 4mo

7books read in October, at the bottom of the list and a real drag was iron flame best readsof the month 2 outstanding books highly recommended:Strange sally diamond & The world that we knew both unlike anything Iv read before which is a true achievement as nothing is r truly original anymore , imagine reading Jekyll & Hyde , Frankenstein or Dracula for the first time and not knowing the story. Southern bookclub guide to vampireslaying was great

By far the best Grady Hendrix in my opinion, so far I tried my best friends exorcism and how to sell a haunted house which I dnf‘ed. SBCGTVS romps along it‘s a fast pasted horror but not to scary or disturbing and not really gruesome until the end , a perfect 👌 Halloween 🎃 read & I thoroughly enjoyed it. More spooky 👻 reads please
