Family Roundabout | Richmal Crompton

Pickpick

what a winner! Alongside highwages, to bed with grand music, the homemaker & someone from a distance this is in my favourite Persephone reads, actually I think it is my favourite. Iv tried to tag everyone in the group onto this and it wouldn‘t let me post came up with an error code … anyway the way the author captures the complexities of families , the different personalities the clashes the matriarchs of each clan -Mrs fowler & Mrs Willoughby 👇

Bookbuyingaddict Is just wonderful writing ✍️ anyone who loves family dynamics and drama will love this, not one of them has a truly happy marriage and no particular style of parenting is correct. Belle has become one of my most hated fictional characters she is awful 😣 she‘s totally unhinged & poor Gillian! As a mother in modern day she‘d be reported to child services! It‘s also a snapshot of life between the wars in a British town, a way of life which …. 3d
Bookbuyingaddict No longer exists. I looked up on Wikipedia the list of the authors published works , I enjoyed this so much I‘d love to read her others & I agree with @andrew61 😀very similar to my beloved cazalet chronicles - if you haven‘t read those YOU MUST they kept me going through lockdown , what a treasure trove to discover when we couldn‘t go out! Any recommendations for other similar works I‘d be very grateful ☺️ 3d
Tamra @Bookbuyingaddict Cazalet Chronicles have been on my TBR so long! 3d
Cathythoughts I loved the book too. I also love your photo.. pink and grey 🩷 3d

LeahBergen That Belle! I enjoyed this one so much I bought a couple of her others when I found them. I should read one soon! 😆 2d
CarolynM Glad you enjoyed it so much😊 I read some of the Just William books in childhood, I didn‘t know she had written books for adults until I saw this one in the Persephone catalogue. I‘m looking out for others now too. 2d

But omg;this man is so so cruel “you try with your idiotic kindness to please everyone & succeed in pleasing nobody,me least of all” & she accepts this other woman into their lives who is in love with her husband, they bothlove this cruel depressive awful man.Is he so cruel tohis wife because he‘s also inlove with Margaret? Was he really that goodlooking & interesting ?I find itmost bizarre butyet addictive

jlhammar Yes, that part was especially cruel. So hard to read. 2y
quietjenn He is a lot, for sure! But your set-up looks wonderful! 2y
LeahBergen Ooph! Yes, that “me least of all”. So cruel. He‘s a difficult one to like after a while, isn‘t he? 2y
CarolynM I didn‘t see the attraction either😒 2y

World Without End | Helen Thomas

#persephonebookclub @LeahBergen @CarolynM what makes me sad reading this is the vivid descriptions of the countryside, the animals birds and insects, plants flowers and trees she sees on their walks which we now don‘t , so much has gone and changed. I live in a rural village and walk my fur kids over fields in woods etc and don‘t see half of what she‘s describing it‘s incredible sad & abit worrying isn‘t it ? He is also mentally ill isn‘t he ?

LeahBergen I was wondering how much the UK flora and fauna had changed since the time she‘s writing about here and especially the areas around where they lived in London (I live in Canada). And yeah … he is mentally ill (which you read more about in the second half 😬). 2y
CarolynM I‘m always enthralled when I read about people picking and eating wild strawberries and blackberries in 20th century English books. To the best of my knowledge there have never been wild strawberries in Australia and we spray the (introduced) wild blackberry bushes with poison because they strangle the native vegetation. @LeahBergen 2y
Bookbuyingaddict @LeahBergen I thought you were in the uk 😆after I saw your photo outside the persephone bookshop in bath . Iv never been to Canada , my husband has & loves it. Wer only tiny in comparison land mass wise so many of our landscape has changed even from the 70s/80s when I was a child. Do you have amazing bookshops ? Do you have to order the persephones in ? 🙂 2y
See All 7 Comments
LeahBergen @CarolynM We have different types of wild berries here in Canada but you have to make sure you‘re not stealing from a bear‘s patch if you‘re in the mountains. 😆 2y
LeahBergen @Karons1 Oh! 😄 That Persephone store photo was actually taken in front of the London shop before they moved to Bath. I‘ve been able to buy a few Persephone books here but I usually just order them from their shop. And we have lots of good bookshops here but nothing like the UK. 😍 2y
CarolynM @LeahBergen Yet people worry about the snakes and spiders in Australia…🤣 2y

Started this wonderful book on the way to the north Norfolkcoast with mollie and her brother who we have rescued and called Teddy he‘s now in his forever home & this is his first ever trip to the beach. I‘d never heard of Helen Thomas. Had to read the synopsis and Google her(good old Google)her writing is full of romance & wonder of early days love & nature & all the simple delights of life

Bookbuyingaddict @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads @Aimeesue @jlhammar @quietjenn @sisilia @CarolynM @Oryx @elkeOriginal @BookNAround @Eyelit @Gissy @Tamra @andrew61 @HeatherBlue @Cathythoughts @rsteve388 @Kristin_Reads @willaful @mom_of_4 Has anyone else started the April pick yet ? If so what‘s your thoughts ? In a modern world of consumerism it‘s refreshing & wonderful to read of how people lived without the possessions we have today & to think nothing of it. 2y
jlhammar Such sweet puppies! Glad you‘re enjoying it so far. Great point about the contrast to our modern day ideals and consumerism. I appreciated that as well (even if it did sound stressful at times to not have a steady/traditional income). She was so good at improvising and making the best of things. 2y
Tamra Yes, I agree there is a marked difference! We can definitely do with less. (Aside from books, which even they made an exception for!) 2y
LeahBergen Omg! Look at those two sweet babies! ❤️❤️ I really enjoyed this read. Good point about consumerism and how little they actually needed to survive. 2y
BookNAround Mollie and Teddy are lovely. 2y
