Reading in the hairdressers, I‘m much better reading this in the day rather than in bed ? at night and getting angry ? at the horrid Nigel (does anyone know a nice Nigel ? Just wondering ? ?) and poor Rosy ?but hooray ?? here comes Betty - and perfect accompaniment is listening to Beyoncé‘s cowboy ? carter album ? thank you ? fellow #persephoneClub buddies for the encouragement ?happy Easter ?

Cathythoughts 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 and I do know a Nigel, and he‘s one of the nicest people you could meet. So there you are 😂 (edited) 4d
LeahBergen 😆😆 Happy Easter! 4d
Tamra I always think of Nigel from Frazier. 😆 4d

I maybe the odd one out here #persephoneClub . But I am so cross with this book 📕 I have had to put it down , perhaps reading it in bed isn‘t such a good idea .,.. oh poor Rosy leave him for godsake !!! I shall stick with it as I‘m sure once Betty gets going it‘ll be a rip roaring read - the photo is Blenheim palace , I was there last week with a friend & my pups 🐶 famously rescued by Consuelo Vanderbilts dowry also sadly a loveless marriage

Cupcake12 I love Blenheim Palace. Took my mum there last year. 5d
Tamra Betty! 💪🏾💪🏾 5d
CarolynM Hang in there, it‘s worth it🙂 5d

... he has lost his temper. He was really very fond of his temper, and rather enjoyed referring to it with tolerant regret as being a bad one and beyond his control -- with a manner which suggested that the attribute was the inevitable result of strength of character and masculine spirit. The luxury of giving way to it was a great one.

I think everyone has posted about the melodrama in this book. Certainly the characters couldn't be more extreme in traits with Nigel being a perfect villain + Betty his nemesis with a tension filled ending. I liked the political aspect with the emphasis on US progress while Britain is in decline

andrew61 It is very interesting to consider the societal aspects of the book, particularly in tandem with something like the secret garden where there is heavy moral message in the characterisations and plots even touching on empire. I know little about Frances Hodgson Burnett, so I was intrigued by her writing here and her themes. She is definitely an American who has strong views. I would however happily buy a typewriter from G Shelden 6d
Tamra @andrew61 George Sheldon was such a likable personable character! Despite the fact it‘s totally predictable he‘ll meet with success, it wasn‘t at all a distraction. 6d
Cathythoughts Great review Andrew. I‘d definitely buy a typewriter from G Sheldon too. 😁 6d
LeahBergen Great review! I also enjoyed comparing this to her children‘s novels as I was reading. And I think G Selden would do very well in sales with our group! 😆 6d
Bookbuyingaddict Iv just started it but v late in bed last night and must admit the beginning isn‘t as gripping 🧐 as other Persephones so fingers crossed 🤞 itll pick up as it‘s a bigger nearly 500 pages 📑……. 6d

Well, it seems that I agree with my fellow #PersephoneClub readers … this one was a melodramatic gem! Nasty Nigel is one of the vilest villains I‘ve come across in recent reading memory.

And I‘m very glad that a favourite author of my childhood has held up so well!

Tamra 👏🏾👏🏾 I got all the gothic vibes. It was a super fun read. 7d
LeahBergen @Tamra Totally! And it was. Especially the “rescued after lame horse/twisted ankle, take shelter in a remote crumbled cottage” part. 😆😆 So good! 👏👏 7d
LeahBergen @Tamra Have you read her other novel published by Persephone? It‘s also good fun! (edited) 7d

Tamra @LeahBergen no, but I saw it on the flap and immediately put it on my TBR! 💕 7d
JenlovesJT47 Haven‘t read it yet but starting it soon! 7d
CarolynM It is a gem! The Making of a Marchioness was one of the first Persephones I bought because it‘s mentioned in one of the Nancy Mitfords (can‘t remember if it‘s Linda or Polly reading it) but I haven‘t read it yet. I will be doing so very soon! (edited) 7d
Cathythoughts Great review! ‘ A Melodramatic gem‘……I love it ! I really enjoyed it too. ❤️ yes, definitely getting Marchioness, Thankyou. (edited) 7d
Cathythoughts @CarolynM I‘ll have to get Marchioness. 👍🏻❤️ 7d
LeahBergen @JenlovesJT47 I hope you enjoy it, too! 7d
LeahBergen @Tamra @CarolynM @Cathythoughts I think you all will really enjoy Marchioness if you liked this one! (edited) 7d

What a wonderfully juicy bit of gothic fiction this is - it really has it all! Poor wilting Rosy, bravely battling Ughtred (that name😵‍💫), plucky, capable Betty, honourable Mount Dunston, all-American G Seldon & best of all the irredeemably villainous Sir Nigel - I envisioned him twirling his moustaches while he tormented his victims. Thoroughly enjoyable. Also, it‘s interesting that idioms we take for granted needed explanations #PersephoneClub

Cathythoughts Great review. I agree with all you say. Lovely picture, your material is beautiful and suits the Persephone 👍🏻❤️ 1w
Bookbuyingaddict Fantastic review can‘t wait to start it 😀 1w

Another #PersephoneClub pick gobbled up! This one is rather melancholy, but the characters are so well drawn I felt like a fly on the wall to the family gossip. None of them are perfect or cardboard cutouts, which made them relatable. Belle was a real piece of work!

At the end, knowing the war was inevitable, left me feeling sad for them.

dabbe 🖤🐾🖤 2w
Cathythoughts Great review! I remember I really enjoyed it. ❤️ 2w
LeahBergen Nice review! I really found myself invested in these families. 2w
Tamra @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I just noticed the blurb in Litsy is wrong, re: year of setting. It was published in 1948, but it‘s set between the wars. At first I thought I‘d read the whole novel wrong. 😆 1w
CarolynM Glad you enjoyed💕 1w

I really enjoyed this story and I loved all the drama.

“ And the Shuttle in the hand of Fate , through every hour of every day, and through the slow, deep breathing of all the silent nights, weaves to and fro - to and fro - drawing with it the threads of human life and thought which strengthen its web: and trace the figures of its yet vague and uncompleted design. “

LeahBergen I‘m thoroughly enjoying it, too! 2w
Tamra 😊 I really devoured it. It had a taste of Wharton & Hawthorne & E. Bronte. ❤️ 2w

Cathythoughts @Tamra Yes ! I agree 👍🏻❤️ 2w
andrew61 I have just finished it and was definitely pulled along by the plot with a feeling a dread as Nigel returned and an inevitable confrontation with Betty loomed. An interesting view on the development of American largesse and I will have to do some back reading on frances hodgson burnett but definitely another very enjoyable read in the persephone catalogue that I would never otherwise have picked up. 2w
Tamra By the way, envious of those beautiful flowers! 1w
Cathythoughts @andrew61 I felt that dread about Nigel returning too… I would never have picked it up either only for our PersehoneClub 👍🏻 1w
Cathythoughts @Tamra Thankyou ! Spring is happening here 😁🩷 1w

Oh, the delicious melodrama! (Insert fainting couch here.) I loved every minute of it! ❤️

It would make a stunning, visually beautiful film.

Tamra @Cathythoughts oh the perils of the modern reader. 😅😆 I “suffer” from buddy/club read syndrome too. 2w
TheLudicReader I have never heard of this, but The Secret Garden and A Little Princess are two of my favourite childhood reads. 2w
andrew61 Yes I am enjoying it so far. I am just at the chapter where Nigel has returned and he and Betty are conducting a walk round the grounds while avoiding disclosing any weakness. He may well be one of the great villains of all time ! 2w
LeahBergen I‘m about halfway through and keep thinking the same thing about it being a great film! 2w
CarolynM Lovely review. I‘m just getting started. 2w
Tamra @TheLudicReader you might give it a try. 😊 2w
