On Warne | Gideon Haigh
post image

I would pay for Haigh‘s writing out of the phone book. He brings intelligence & accessibility at the same time, and makes reading about Shane Warne feel fresh when it should be anything but.

This was brilliant & I can‘t wait to get my hands on his latest book next month.

This was a fun, light-hearted read. I love the shambolic nature of Brazil that Smyth paints.

Kaiser channels Costanza at times: it‘s not a lie if YOU believe it.

What a fantastic book, one of the first to go first-hand onto the playing field & show us the humans underneath the helmets.

Superbly written, I feel like I know each of the players personally.

I usually enjoy Michael Calvin‘s work, but this felt like a connection of interviews joined together rather than a narrative.

It‘s a fascinating subject so I was slightly disappointed that this wasn‘t a bit better.

Season on the Brink | John Feinstein

Bob Knight is either one of the least or most understood coaches in the modern era.

This book is billed as a modern classic, I hope it lives up to its acclaim.

Not quite as good as the previous book about Grand Admiral Thrawn but still an enjoyable read.

The MacGuffin isn‘t compelling & the past / present structure doesn‘t quite work but Thrawn is such a good character it overcomes these criticisms.

Authority: A Novel | Jeff VanderMeer

I really enjoyed “Annihilation” & the world that the author created. Nothing is spoon-fed to the reader & certain events are left ambiguous & open to interpretation.

I‘m interested in seeing where the story goes from here. I‘m not expecting answers.

BenSearle Sad to say, I didn‘t enjoy this at all. A real let-down after the first book. Poorly paced & lacked the tension & character of its predecessor. 6y

A Season with Richmond | Konrad Marshall
post image

I really enjoy works that show the “behind the scenes” effort that goes into elite performance, whether it‘s sport, music, film or anything else.

Richmond are such a fascinating club, too. What they‘ve achieved is outstanding.

I‘m even beginning to appreciate Aussie Rules football 😜

I found Annihilation in the library just as I was about to start the film on Netflix - serendipity!

I‘ve always loved “what if” & alternative history, so I‘m not sure why it‘s taken me so long to pick this book up.

Dick is such an influential voice in the world of science fiction & dystopian fiction, I‘m really looking forward to this.

Detours | Tim Rogers
post image

As the leader of You Am I, Tim Rogers wrote many of the songs that defined my adolescence & young adulthood.

On top of being a gifted musician, his wit & empathy come across strongly in his lyrics. The album “Hourly, Daily” is a masterpiece in the way it captures a certain part of Australian life with honesty & clarity.

I cannot wait to get stuck into this.

I‘ve enjoyed John Safran‘s work through this whole career: from TV, to radio, to literature, and have been looking forward to starting this book for a while.

It‘s a lazy term but he‘s made a career out of “gonzo” journalism & clearly has an affinity with true crime as well as social issues.

Time to get stuck into a side of Australia few outsiders see.

Dice Man | Luke Rhinehart
post image

Now that the World Cup is over, and I‘m taking a short break from science fiction & fantasy, I thought I‘d grab The Dice Man out of the extensive “to be read” pile.

I picked this up from the hotel book exchange when I was on honeymoon in 2014, it‘s been a while.

I‘m looking forward to getting stuck into it.

I never read any Harry Potter when they came out, nor have I seen any of the films.

Reading my way through the series has been a fun experience & a nice change from heavier, more serious reading.

The stories are entertaining & Rowling writes skilfully to her audience. I can see why these are kids favourites.

No shame being a 40 year old man reading this on the bus to work!
