Tove describes the cities she visits like it's a work of art. She conveys the essence of the cities and it's people so eloquently throughout her letters. Even though she adds tiny illustrations in her letters, I feel she already paints a magnificent picture through her words.

so-soI don't read political works. My initial apprehensions aside (due to the title), I was pleasantly surprised that the content didn't deal with political action. It focusses on artists, their individuality and the ideal environment to nurture true art. It zeros in on an artist's soul and deconstructs the inadvertent obstructions set by the society in the journey to self fulfillment. He gives abstract solutions to the crisis.

The work explains so eloquently the need to see a person for who he is rather than to measure one by what he has. It was interesting to see how this dominance of possession and assets over personality is shown to be entrenching deeper roots in the society than we first perceive.

Witty, heartwarming and surprising. The title appeared sort of grim but the story is no where so. It's not a masterpiece but a good weekend read, especially after a hectic work week.

pick'Beloved' is a work of art. It transcends genres. It's a disturbing historic account of the evils inflicted on a community, it's a psychological analysis of the turmoils of a simple woman caught in extremely harsh situations and somehow the supernatural element complements the story. The usage of dialogues and memories as a medium of narration establishes a link between the reader and characters.

pickA chronicle of events from the daily life of the author, yet the goat plays a major role. True to the nature of the author, the light hearted narration, the seemingly simple conversations and observations which shroud deeper meanings stand out. It was interesting to get introduced to a wide array of characters with their diverse quirks, aspirations and expectations. The book portrays the down to earth strands of life. Excellent read.

pickThe authour is an adept storyteller. The colours discussed in the book attain an anthropomorphic quality as we read about them. It is not merely a chronicling of facts. It is a narration of history, facts, symbolisms, perceptions and science brought threaded together with a poetic language.
The book came to a close as beautifully as it began. It began and ended with two colours that we humans perceive as divine and beautiful and yet terrifying.
It was Shakespeare who cemented the relationship between green and envy. With The Merchant of Venice, written in the late 1590s, he gave us “green-eyed jealousy”; in Othello (1603), he has Iago mention “the green-ey‘d monster, which doth mock / The meat it feeds on.” - Kassia St.Clair

It was an almost inconsequential sentence in the book but it made me wonder about what makes a place unpromising. Also we have a tendency to associate colours with a notion of positivity, so it seemed intriguing if taken in a literal sense...
As with most myths, this one contains a nub of truth overlaid with a great deal of embellishment.
In an article on baby clothes in the New York Times in 1893 the rule stated was that you should “always give pink to a boy and blue to a girl.” Neither the author nor the woman in the shop whom she was interviewing were quite sure why, but the author hazarded a tongue-in-cheek guess. “[T]he boy‘s outlook is so much more roseate than the girl‘s,” she wrote, “that it is enough to make a girl baby blue to think of living a woman‘s life in the world.”
The author's take on Orange's personality is very intriguing...
