The first Moomin book that came out for the first time 80yrs ago. I think it‘s interesting that the original title doesn‘t mention Moomins, but calls them tiny trolls. Apparently the publisher wanted people to know what they was

In this first story Moomin and his mom are on a journey to find a place to live before the winter and looking for dad. In their way they meet several different creatures and has quite the adventure in a 50p book

The moomin display at B&N piqued my curiosity and I went ahead and grabbed some the Moomin series from the library. I read Moominland Midwinter to match the storm outside, but now I‘m following the order of the series. It‘s very charming, but the show Moominvalley (2019) really brought the characters to life for me. I enjoyed some of the 90s episodes too. I was really excited to learn Jansson was queer and that Moomin and Snufkin are queer-coded.

sarahbarnes I love Jansson‘s novels and have always wanted to read some of these books, too. 6d
RosePressedPages I did hear Jansson wrote other adult novels! I‘m excited to try her work outside of Moomin 6d

I either never read this one or forgot most of the story, or maybe it's shorter in the comic strip versions? It's been so long. The beginning and ending seemed familiar.

I really love Moominmamma just relentlessly adopting anyone who needs a mother.

Thanks to @Monalyisha talking about the Moomin books, I decided to go and read them! And turns out that though I only remembered for sure reading Moominland Midwinter, I'm pretty sure I had remembered this one. It doesn't entirely fit what I remember about the series; I think I saw someone else mentioning that it doesn't quite fit, so I guess we'll see. It's charming all the same.

I didn‘t count these in my midyear ratings because they feel incomparable. But I‘m deeply in love and so glad I finally checked them out! They‘ll be in the upper echelon of my 2025 favorites, for sure.

CBee What order did you read them in? I found an article that actually says reading them out of order is best. I can‘t seem to find The Great Flood though 🤷‍♀️😔 5mo
monalyisha @CBee I haven‘t read them all but I started with Midwinter! 5mo
monalyisha @CBee If, in my reading, I come to feel as though I‘ve made a grave misstep, I‘ll let you know. 😅 5mo

CBee @monalyisha sounds good! I started with Moominsummer Madness. Here‘s the article I mentioned: https://www.fatherly.com/entertainment/moomin-books-reading-order 5mo
willaful @CBee I've never seen that one either.

IIRC, the chronology is kind of odd. I started with Midwinter too and it was a great choice for me as a child

shanaqui I think I remember just reading Moominland Midwinter when I was a kid, you tempt me to get all of them and read them all! 5mo
CBee @willaful it‘s much harder to find than the others! 🤷‍♀️ 5mo
quietlycuriouskate I have so much love for these books! 🥰 5mo

Beautiful picture book that captures a wild, nature-filled, imaginative childhood, of Tove Jansson, iconic Swedish author of the Moomins comics. It's inspired by Jansson's writing about her youth, and includes a short bio at the back, which I'm happy to say mentions her longtime woman partner and how unusual it was for her to be out at that time.

Moominland Midwinter was my pick for February, given that I read and loved it first. But I can see Giving Up the Ghost potentially sweeping the whole board.

I‘ll tag each of the remaining books below (to make it easy for anyone who may be considering adding them to their TBR).

Melissamcnally How did you make that graphic? 9mo
monalyisha @Melissamcnally I somehow missed your comment. Sorry about that! I got the template from @Cseydel (who made it on Canva). I just saved her original to my Notes app (so I could use a high quality image) and then added my own books to it using PicCollage. 😊 9mo
