When Mr. Schwalbe and his beautiful, hardworking mother found out she had a treatable, yet incurable pancreatic cancer, they started a book club. The books they chose to share were old favorites, hopeful books on death, and anything else that struck their fancy.

I fell in love with Mary Ann. She worked tirelessly on a mobile library in Afghanistan and her refugee work while she was slowly losing her energy. She became one of my heroes.

Wild horses are the same as young men - wild, stubborn, and independent. I didn't appreciate this novel the first time I read, but now it may be one of my favorites. I love John Grady Cole, Rawlins, an Blevins. So many sad moments, but without those sad moments in life, are young men and wild horses ever truly trained?

#PopSugar20 western

I hope The Crossing is just as well written.

I'd checked out two graphic memoirs and came close returning this one without opening. I'm glad I read. Only days before her #summerwedding, Marisa finds out she has breast cancer. You witness her disbelief, her tears, her breakdowns, her acceptance, and her humor in this amazing book.

This book has so much...
*A neurodiverse character who identifies as a genderqueer
*A doctor who identifies as transgender
*A generational ship that is divided by race and each race has certain jobs/shifts
*Dictator who plays god - leads topdeckers into dehumanizing and degrading the bottom deckers
*A rebellion

And it was BRILLIANT!

"All she wished for was perfunctory respect paid to the fact that she was, indeed, alive."

Yippee!! I'm done. I have been reading since January 1.

+ Fictional account of Joseph the abnoxious shepherd to repentant slave to top statesman of Egypt.
+ Dramatization of intense scenes
+ Was written by Mann in Germany about the origin of the Hebrew faith during the rise of Nazis. So brave of him. Mann never returned.

- Very dense. Read in places like an essay.
- Repetitive explanations.

Roary47 I‘ve had books like that. I‘m so happy you were able to finish it! 💛 4y
arubabookwoman Congratulations! More difficult to read than Buddenbrooks I'm sure. My copy is awaiting me in a storage unit with all our stuff in Florida. 4y

I finished this behemoth. It is not a book for everyone. If you appreciate avant garde art, you would enjoy Murikami's brilliant writing. It's a smash-up of different genres that works. It took 4 months and I am so glad I am done.

Butterfinger @ElizaMarie @zezeki I thought the ending was rushed. I understand that Tengo and Aomame are in a third dimension, but I still don't understand why the Little People came out of Ushikawe's mouth. What chrysalis were they making? The last time they came out of a mouth, a dog exploded. And, what about the NHK collector? I get that it was Tengo's so called Dad, but did it end when he died? It has really gone over my head. 5y
ElizaMarie @Butterfinger I had been confused about the NHK collector as well. Like why? But yeah I get your review, it is definitely not a book for everyone. I enjoyed it despite the confusions with it. :) 5y
zezeki It's been two years since I've read it so I don't remember the details, but I do remember that I've found the ending underwhelming. 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job on completing multiple prompts! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Great work finishing this one! I started it in March but decided it wasn't for me, at least not right now! 5y
Butterfinger @TheAromaofBooks believe me, I would have bailed if not for a discussion group. 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser It took me a year to read 2/3's and then I read the last 1/3 a year after that. The audiobook helped me along. It was my first Murakami and yes, its very avant garde. It's not my favorite style of storyline but I'm still up for more by him, just for curiosity's sake 😉 5y

Bk2 of May is done! I listened to the audiobook on Scribd(which I‘m loving btw, I‘ll link to join in the comments👇)The Book is very different to the movie, was it just me or was anyone else hoping a Dino would eat that annoying granddaughter?😂Other than her it was a really good read. #LitsyAtoZ2020 #LetterJ #PopSugar20 #InACountryBeginningWithC #AudiobookBingo #NoPersonOnTheCover #MayBookBingo #Audiobook #PageAThon #448pgs #StartOnYourShelfAThon

Bk6 of April & Bk3 of my #EasterExtravaganza #readathon is done🙌 It‘s 3 of the 4 in my goals, 968pges of 2,000 & 3 off my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom. I think the only goal I won‘t reach is the 2,000 pages! This book was a great read, set in Norway, it‘s about Viking folklore, Yggdrasil & a girl descended from Odin & a weaver. Loved it♥️ #PopSugar20 #MCWithAVisionImpairment #ReadHarder2020 #MCWithADisability #ReadingEurope2020 #Norway #JennyIs30

Bk5 of April & Bk2 of my #EasterExtravaganza #readathon is done. That‘s now 723 of 2,000pgs,1 SciFi plus 1 Dystopian off my goal of 4 books in 4 genres & 2 books off my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom. Loved this novel about a world obliterated through Climate Change & a new Dinè(Navajo)Nation that‘s risen up, filled with monsters & gods. Maggie Hoskie is a monster slayer, one wounded in spirit, trying to overcome the past. #PopSugar20 #FaunaInTheirName
