Mehso-so

I like the setup of the novel and the way the events are presented. The chapters are on the shorter side and they follow multiple characters, creating a fast-paced novel that at times was hard to put down. The one thing I wasn‘t a fan of is the ending, which leaves many things unconcluded and unresolved, but I wouldn‘t necessarily define it as a cliffhanger; there were too many things left up in the air for my taste, even within a series.

Most of the book was slow, except for the very beginning and the very end, and the core of the book was just a lot of the same things happening in different ways. Nothing was that significant. All the action in the core of the book had little to do with Milton and most to do with Elijah. I think if the book was presented as being about what it was truly about, it would have been better or at least more understandable.

I found this a really valuable little book. It really increased both my understand and appreciation of Milton‘s Paradise Lost. Lewis explains things very well (with the exception of occasional use of Latin verses), and makes frequent reference to the works of Milton scholars/critics to guide further debate and reflection.
I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who has read Paradise Lost! 8.5/10

Mistermandolin I have and I loved it. I often read Lewis just for the beauty of the prose. A magnificent writer. 5y

“These expressions do not represent real connexions of thought, any more than the prologued syllables in Handel represent real pronunciation.” (p. 47)

I love this comparison between poetry and music. I never really thought about it before, but now I can see it!

John Milton is a great character who rather in Jack Reacher style wanders the planet rescuing people, even though those who he used to work for are searching the planet to kill him, they don‘t like his resignation from their employ! Not that well known a series but I really enjoying reading them, and now 15 in the series. #RescueMe #MOvember

gradcat @Cinfhen @Andrew65 @TrishB Sounds a lot like Jack Reacher, which is yet another series that I kind of stopped reading...for no good reason. Have you read these, @EadieB ? 5y
EadieB No I haven‘t yet! 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 You posted about a deal for these books and some of us got the books. I think it was a .99 special for the 3 books. Thanks for posting it as my library does not have his books. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB He is one of those authors who doesn‘t seem to have spread beyond Amazon and whose books I enjoy. In the UK L J Sellers is another one and I love her Wade Jackson series set in the US. My library has none of her books and only the first one of Mark Dawson. Have you been on his website as if you register your email address you get some books emailed to you. I have pushed both authors a number of times as well as Alex Lukeman. (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I just sent my email. Looks like he is mostly self published. I always forget what‘s in my kindle as I‘d rather read the physical books. But I have been reading more ebooks so I am getting used to reading them. (edited) 5y

Very excited to read this. I‘m told it‘s a good October read, so I‘m going to try to finish it this month. I‘ve really got to get my reading time figured out with my crazy work schedule.
