Librarybelle It was almost hard to read—such a jerk! 3mo
Cuilin The audacity of this man!! WTF? He really thinks he can explain why he abandoned her. 3mo

Bookwormjillk When the thing we all knew would happen actually happens. Ugh. Why did he change his name though. Such a shady guy. 3mo
mcctrish I‘m so angry and upset! This chapter 🤯 and the restraint I had to show to not throw my kindle! ‘He‘ can‘t believe she is an esteemed governess after he doomed her to a life in the gutter, he keeps trying to talk to her knowing it will put Ruth into further trouble with Bradshaw and then his final outburst! The only good thing about Bellingshit is he makes Bradshaw look good 3mo
julieclair Donne/Bellingham is too awful to believe! What a selfish, supercilious cad. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly I was NOT expecting that! I‘m impressed with Ruth‘s strength and ability to stay cool in public. I am NOT impressed with any of the awful things Donne-Bellingham is up to 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡 He doesn‘t want to apologize. He doesn‘t even want anything to change. He just wants to force her to listen to him and he‘s going to take advantage of Leonard to do it. UGH!!!!! 3mo
currentlyreadinginCO Hard to read, I just wanted him to leave her alone !! 3mo
Ruthiella Oh, the double standard reflected in this chapter is particularly infuriating. 😡 3mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Bellingshit is a whole word. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin the akin to I assaulted you but you asked for it gaslighting troupe was a throw the book moment. 3mo
mcctrish @Ruthiella absolutely infuriating (edited) 3mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie I hated him before and now I‘m apoplectic 3mo
mcctrish @currentlyreadinginCO the whole time I‘m reading I‘m muttering “stop fucking talking to her” 3mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Seriously😡 3mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly he is so awful 3mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish apoplectic is THE word! 3mo
Cuilin @mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly @TheBookHippie @indoordame @currentlyreadinginCO it does beg the question Why did he change his name? 3mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin Indeed. WHY?! 3mo
currentlyreadinginCO I'm so curious! Did he give her a false name initially bc he had malintent w her?? Did mommy make him change his name so that Ruth couldn't find him?? @Cuilin 3mo
mcctrish @currentlyreadinginCO the innkeeper knew the family as Bellingshit, has he changed it to Donne to run for office ? Or does he have two names ? Family name and lordship entitled twat name ? 3mo
willaful It was murder waiting for this post, because all i wanted to do is reach into my book and yeet him into the sun! The only way he could redeem himself is to marry Ruth and then instantly die, leaving her a good reputation and lots of money. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Cuilin Yes!!! I‘m waiting for that reveal. Maybe he was adopted by a rich relative like one of Jane Austen‘s brothers? 3mo
dabbe @willaful I hope for the same outcome! 3mo

dabbe That photo says it all. #perfection 10mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk 😂😂😂 10mo
Graciouswarriorprincess I agree…wtf? This book is something else! 10mo
TheBookHippie I‘m pretending I‘m sitting at the bar listening to a drunk tell a very long story….. 10mo
Cuilin I do wonder why a chapter like this is added into a novel, as it never seems to move the plot forward. Is to highlight the suffering as that‘s a big theme of the book? Who knows? It‘s all rather fascinating though, if a little 🍌 👖. 10mo
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃 10mo
Ruthiella So I listened to a pretty erudite book tuber about this book and he said the point of the novel is the age old question in Christian theology of why do humans suffer if there is a benevolent god looking out for us. So the plot is maybe all subservient to this idea and therefore occasionally whackadoodle. Also, FD had a son named Aleksey who died as a child, which was a huge blow. Generally FD‘s life was one of hardship, illness and grief. 10mo
Ruthiella Here‘s the link- though it is a long video. https://youtu.be/zpqES5V6iAg?si=Mt9Bwh8JgLfDneMZ 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella thank you for sharing!!! 10mo
Cuilin @Ruthiella oh that is fascinating. Thanks for sharing. 10mo
Cuilin @TheBookHippie save a barstool for me. 🥃🥃 (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @Ruthiella my friend told me to pretend I‘m reading Job from the Old Testament in the Christian Bible so … must be so! 10mo
TheBookHippie @Ruthiella thx for the link! 10mo
mcctrish Was Aloysha not supposed to deliver something to this second-captain? Money? Or did I miss something in the last chapter‘s yelling ?Biggest take away from this chapter? The insult “you‘re a little pile, and you smell vile” absolutely SAVAGE 10mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish yeah, he was supposed to give him money! Ugh 10mo
mcctrish @BarkingMadRead something to look forward to tomorrow 🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ 10mo
Aimeesue @Ruthiella Thanks for the link! 10mo

Bookwormjillk The worst 13mo
currentlyreadinginCO Soooo sick of Angel and his excuses! He's mad that Tess isn't the pure simple soul of his agrarian career fantasies bc she's a d'Urberville and he's too worried about his his public perception to even see her as a person, when nothing about her past would have become public anyway 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ #everythingisangelsfault 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly I have nothing to add. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 Angel Clare. 13mo
Cuilin Purity culture 🤢 13mo
dabbe Angel's actions are 🤬. By asking Izz to go with him to Brazil, he is inviting her undoing and would make her a fallen woman—the same quality that caused him to cast off Tess! To unthinkingly invite Izz to ruin her life is contemptible, hypocritical in the extreme, and disturbingly indifferent to an innocent young woman's unrequited feelings. Then to rescind the invitation, a wise decision—is equally hurtful to Izz. And what he does to Tess ... 🤬 13mo
Bklover @dabbe Well said!🩷🩷💜 13mo
dabbe @Bklover 🤩😃🤗 13mo
quietjenn Seriously, this dude. 😡 13mo
KAO Unbelievable behavior by (He‘s no) Angel!! 13mo
Bluebird Grrrr! 😡🤬🤜 i wanted to reach into the book and throttle Angel. What a hypocrite! Can‘t believe I thought he was a decent guy…. 13mo
