mcctrish I‘m so angry and upset! This chapter 🤯 and the restraint I had to show to not throw my kindle! ‘He‘ can‘t believe she is an esteemed governess after he doomed her to a life in the gutter, he keeps trying to talk to her knowing it will put Ruth into further trouble with Bradshaw and then his final outburst! Ruthiella So I listened to a pretty erudite book tuber about this book and he said the point of the novel is the age old question in Christian theology of why do humans suffer if there is a benevolent god looking out for us. So the plot is maybe all subservient to this idea and therefore occasionally whackadoodle. Also, FD had a son named Aleksey who died as a child, which was a huge blow. Generally FD‘s life was one of hardship, illness and grief. 10mo
