For Real | Alexis Hall

I adore this story even more with the annotations. Jasper‘s chapter was wild and crazy. I just can‘t help loving Laurie and Toby even more, especially with the little glimpses at the writing, inspiration, and background stuff throughout from the annotations. Toby‘s LMP recipe was hilarious. This edition is an absolute celebration of Laurie and Toby. It also promises a second book for them. I would adore that so very much!

It‘s SO amusing that a book called “For Real” would have annotations that are just so… well… real. 🤷🏼‍♀️

CarolynM This is why I adore Alexis Hall🤣 5d

Okay. Seriously. How is this not perfection?
⭐️Also, ARH (anal retentive Hall) is now a whole mood and will be short hand for “I‘m being anal retentive… just like Alexis Hall, so at least we‘re having fun over here.”⭐️

So I‘ve been reading the bonus material in my all time favourite Alexis Hall book and my gods the snark is on point! 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻 So I went online trying to find a picture of this amazing human being, but all I found was not amazing snark and subversion brilliance on his/hers/their website! Still don‘t have a face to go with the brilliance, but I am in love.

CarolynM A few years ago I spent some time trying to work out who he really is following the few clues scattered through his blog. Complete waste of effort, of course, and I feel a bit bad about it because he‘s entitled to his privacy, but like you I would love to see his face. 5d
julesG @CarolynM right? Let's give him his privacy. This way he can write more books for us to enjoy. 😉 5d
CarolynM @julesG Yeah, I get the feeling being unmasked would inhibit his writing. 5d

GingerAntics @CarolynM @julesG that is a fair point. He need to be able to sit and write without people gathering at the window or getting excited in a coffee shop because she went out to get some fresh air. I do need more Alexis Hall books, so it‘s all good. I‘m adoring the fact that they call themselves “Hall” all the time. I can‘t help laughing. 4d
GingerAntics @CarolynM @julesG ALEXIS HALL IS A BLOODY PEN NAME!!! Oh my god!!! Alexis Hall could be ANYONE!!! 3d
julesG Yes. You didn't know? He makes it quite clear in his author biographies. He always writes it's because he likes his day job so much. 3d
GingerAntics @julesG now that I know, it seems so obvious.. but no, that didn‘t click for me. So any person just sitting in southeast England could secretly be Alexis Hall. Well, damn. Now, I want to just go to southeast England, go sit in a bunch of coffee and shops and stuff, and then look at everyone, imagining each of them as Alexis Hall. 🤣😂🤣 2d
CarolynM @julesG And check out the staff lists at all the schools looking for physics/maths teachers… Oh yeah, privacy 🥴 (edited) 2d
julesG @CarolynM we're not Sherlocking him out. I think I could narrow it down to a few possible candidates (yes, did my fair share of stalking too), but I'm sure discovery would change his writing. Let's leave him be. 😉 2d
GingerAntics @julesG @CarolynM I totally agree! I‘m just going to be looking at every British person with good writing skills thinking… are YOU Alexis Hall? lol 2d

#TwoForTuesday thanks for the tag @Nessavamusic 💕 I had to think hard because I read a few great books this month @sprainedbrain but I really think the tagged book was the MOST UNIQUE book I‘ve read in awhile. The premise was so wild and it‘s totally unrealistic BUT I loved it!! A young woman recovering from a terrible trauma chooses to immerse herself in the world of 70‘s tv sitcom Three‘s Company. #ForReal #ISwear

Nessavamusic @Cinfhen that sounds really weird and interesting! 3y

I read a lot of non-fiction (for me) this Spring for a book prize committee that I was part of. Today, I was listening to the most recent All the Books and Liberty‘s co-host this week is a host for Book Riot‘s non-fiction podcast, For Real. This week‘s episode is a recap of the best non-fiction of 2019 so far and Liberty Hardy was a guest host in a quid pro quo. I am excited to find some other titles to add to my nonfiction TBR! #bookriot #forreal

This novel is an exquisite meditation on grief and mental illness. It is dark and sometimes difficult to read as a result, but so beautifully written. I highly recommend it, but don‘t read it if you‘re pregnant—wait until later. Her publishers need to get her some foreign distribution rights post-haste!

Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen It‘s good! Heavy indeed, but beautifully written. I hope you can track it down! 7y
Cinfhen Thanks so much for letting me know...I‘m checking BookDepository right now, even though I‘m on a #bookbuyingban #forreal 7y
Cinfhen It comes up as unavailable on BookDepository ~ I‘ll check back in a few weeks & on Amazon too😀 7y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen You‘re welcome! And good luck with that ban—I can never make them stick. 😬 7y
TheSloanRanger So glad you liked it (if like is even the right word IDK it's so tortuously beautiful!) She's just released a new one called The Gulf. Highly recommended 👌 (and picked up this copy from Booktopia, though they might be Aussie only @Cinfhen!) 7y

Ok, don't hate me, but these movies were horrible. The books are so specific and beautiful, and the characters are so memorable. The movies didn't do the complexity of the books justice. In the Heart of the Sea was such an amazing piece of non-fiction. The movie was lacking so much. Ugh. ☹️️📚#octphotochallenge #ruinedbythemovie

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I didn't like Alice much either (haven't seen the other one) 8y
Leelee08 @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I'm glad I'm not alone! 8y

Shortstack In the Heart of the sea was the worst movie! My boyfriend and I loved the book so much so were doubly disappointed! 8y
Leelee08 @Shortstack I agree 100%!! 8y
KarenUK 👍 8y
mcctrish It's sad but sometimes I think while reading a book "OMG I can just see this as a movie" and then they make the movie and I think " OMG I can't go and see that movie it will be wrecked" 8y
Leelee08 @mcctrish I'm the same way! It's like I want to see it as a movie, but I really don't want them to screw up something that I love sooooo much.... 8y
LibrarianRyan I agree on Alice. Not seen heart of the sea yet. 8y
Zelma Agreed! I liked certain aspects of the Alice movie, but it was not my thing at all. Too many changes, too much focus on the wrong characters. It was visually gorgeous but was pretty terrible. 8y
Leelee08 @Zelma Definitely! 8y
ValerieAndBooks This may seem like a dumb question but what about the Disney Alice? Believe it or not I have never read Alice or seen any of the movie adaptations. But I did recently buy the book so I can remedy that! 8y
Faibka Looooved In the Heart of the Sea, so well researched. Didn't see the movie, how disappointing that it wasn't good :( 8y
