#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong #Chapter13 Mrs. Ellingham is leaving. All the sisters go to Osborne Castle for the pre-hunt breakfast. Mr. Tomlinson goes on a long boring chauvinistic tirade about women not being authors.

Everyone quickly retreats to the lounge, Emma tries very hard to get Mr. Howard. She only succeeds is getting pulled away to look at Lord Osborne‘s guns. When she returns, Mr. Howard is quiet cold to her. 👇

MicrobeMom She spend the night crying and fretting. Elizabeth does a good job of making light of it suggesting both Mr. Howard and Lord Osborne are excellent s matches. Emma is. It having it and only wants Mr. Howard. Pretty sure he stepping aside for Lord Osborne to please Lady Osborne. 2y

Ruthiella But why‘s he mad at Emma then? 2y
MicrobeMom @Ruthiella True, but I‘m not sure he is mad at her. I think she might be misinterpreting things. At least that is my hope. 2y
Ruthiella @MicrobeMom You‘re right. We only have her impressions… 2y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRun my sentiments exactly!!! 2y
TheBookHippie @Ruthiella I forget that too. 2y
julieclair We just knew that Lord Osborne would do something to mess up Emma and Mr. Howard‘s budding romance. It sure didn‘t take him long. 😒 2y

I grew up in a cult that didn't celebrate holidays. So my knowledge of Traditional Church dates comes from Books and PBS. And now Google. Here's the definitions of bits I didn't know in this Chapter. And dates in case you need to pencil in some tidying.

"Tidying was over now until next Easter or Whitsuntide." ?

TheBookHippie I grew up Jewish and Protestant my mom was born Catholic but adopted at 9 and made to be Protestant 😅😳. So parts of this book make me holler with laughter….. 2y
Ruthiella Growing up as a Methodist, we called this Pentecost, not Whitsun. 2y

AnneCecilie I must confess that I was a little confused by the Oxford Group movement reference. When I googled I got one thing for Oxford Group and an other for Oxford movement. I‘m not religious enough to know which one they are referring to here. (edited) 2y
rwmg When I was a child, WhitMonday was a public holiday, then the name got changed to May Bank Holiday, and then the date got changed to the last Monday in May. 2y
rubyslippersreads While Mildred was doing her Whitsun tidying, she should have thrown that photograph of Bernard into the trash. 😠 2y
Sparklemn @Ruthiella Also raised Methodist. I didn‘t realize Pentecost and Whitsun were the same. You learn something new every day! 😀 2y
Sparklemn @rwmg I never realized the Bank Holidays had any religious significance. I assumed they were similar to Labor Day in the US. Good to know! 2y
rwmg @Sparklemn Christmas Day and Good Friday have always been holidays and so Whitsun being by definition 50 days after Easter it was a good time to have a bank holiday. There were various events traditionally held on Whit Monday so a lot of people were given that day off anyway even before it became an official bank holiday. (edited) 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @rwmg interesting! 2y

#pemberlittens #chapter13 Margaret goes to visit Bessy. Bessy is miserably ill and dying. She is worried about her sister and there is talk of her becoming a maid for the Hales, but to no avail. Margaret tell her if the beauty of Helstone and Bessy tell her of how she is dying from breathing in cotton fibers. When Margaret returns home Mrs. Hale is clearly sick and in pain. Mr. Hale wants to hear nothing of it but let‘s her call the doctor.

CrowCAH I bet many people back in the time of the factories died of breathing in the cotton fibers. 3y
MicrobeMom @CrowCAH I do feel bad for Bessy. She has had it rough and I can imagine having to inhale cotton fibers everyday. Early factories were a death trap. 3y

#wanderingthroughwutheringheights #pemberlittens #chapter13 C is recovering from almost dying (brain fever). 2 months have past. H & Isabella return to WH married. She realizes her mistake and is miserable. H is a monster to her. No one is nice to her at WH and she doesn‘t want E to know. But she writes Nelly all about it. These are all the worst people. Not one likable character!

Crinoline_Laphroaig It just keeps getting worse! 3y

This was kind of a boring chapter. The Bertram brothers disagree on the prospect of setting up a little theater at the house to put on a play. I didn‘t get to much from this chapter honestly.

As has come to be expected, the Thorpes have no manners.

When the Thorpes and James unsuccessfully talk Catherine into blowing off Miss Tilney again, John goes behind her back and does it for her, because predictably, he‘s a nightmare person.

Catherine stands up for herself and refuses to go, running after the Tilneys to set things straight. She is pleased to learn Mr. and Mrs. Allen back her decisions.

eeclayton I'm so proud of Catherine for enduring all the emotional blackmail and sticking to her decision ☺️ 4y

I didn't have time to post yesterday but here's #chapter13 for #hochapteraday #hope! Thankfully, the trio didn't give up hope on finding out who Nicolas Flamel was and they finally triumphed when Neville gave Harry his chocolate frog card. Plus, Harry has hope that he's a good Quidditch player and that people will respect him for him rather than just his name. And Neville gets some hope from Harry that he can face down Malfoy and his bullies.
