The Stand | Stephen King

Welcome to the #LosersClub open discussion for #theStand
Please be mindful of spoilers. We have new readers to King who haven‘t read all of his books. When referencing his other work, please keep this in mind for our new-to-King friends. Don‘t forget to tag each other in the comments so your friends can see your reply. Have fun!

Bookwormjillk I don‘t even know where to start! I don‘t think I‘ll ever get sick of reading and re-reading this one. 7h
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk never ever ever. Always and forever my favorite! 5h

PaperbackPirate I wanted to join in on this one but just didn‘t have the time. Maybe later this year! 5h
TieDyeDude I really enjoyed the graphic novel adaptation. I'm not a fan of the artist's style, but it was consistent and the characters were discernable (which isn't always the case in comics with a large cast). The overall focus was more on the Colorado crew, but it never felt rushed or lacking. I would say the biggest miss was Trashy. His story kinda dropped off after he got to Vegas, so his role in the finale felt underdeveloped. 5h
TieDyeDude I has been about 5 years since I read The Stand for the first time. I was surprised at how much came back to me as I was doing this re-read, though I mostly forgot the Vegas finale 🤷‍♂️ Maybe in another 5 years, I'll read the uncut novel 😋 Has anyone done this on audio? (edited) 5h
Bookwormjillk @TieDyeDude yes, I did it on audio this time. It works. 4h
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude how can they do that to poor Trashy! He‘s so important! 3h
JessClark78 I‘m only about a hundred pages in, but this is my third or fourth time reading The Stand. I‘m always amazed at how King can write so many characters in one book. 1h

Pickpick

This is one of those books I can read every year or so and I get something different from it every time. Looking forward to discussing with the #LosersClub later this month.

BarkingMadRead My all time fave, and I totally agree. I pick something new up every time! 1d
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead reading these books in order I'm amazed at how early in his career he wrote some of (IMO) best books. 1d

It‘s okay, Steve. They can‘t all be winners. The cover is rad. 🤷‍♀️

Pickpick

While any abridged adaptation is necessarily going to come with its share of deviations, I think the team at Marvel did an excellent job at adapting this epic story. They even included a cheeky King cameo, with “Rich Bachman“, drawn to resemble King, as one of Flagg's lieutenants. #constantreader #losersclub
Having read both the original edit and this adaptation, it'll be interesting to one day read the “complete and uncut“ version.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it.

Mehso-so

Roland, the Gunslinger, is chasing the Man in Black to discover the location of the Dark Tower. He travels through a dystopian world and meets people. There is some good prose, but this book feels like a puzzle that is missing a lot of important pieces. Meh. I generously gave this a So-So in the hopes that the other books of this series will redeem this experience.

TrishB The others definitely will. I always tell people to read this one and quickly carry on! 1w
Loanne @TrishB That‘s what I hear. I love SK and I love his writing style so I am invested. 1w

Just a reminder that April‘s #LosersClub read is #theLongWalk Put your library holds in now, search your shelves, or buy a new copy, and check back on or about April 1st, when we begin reading this one. BookwormAHN I loved The Long Walk 🖤 And I'm still on the waite list for The Stand audiobook. 1w
BarkingMadRead @BookwormAHN I haven‘t read Long Walk in decades, I can‘t wait! I‘m still reading the Stand (for the gazillionth time) I‘ll be finishing mid April at this point 🤣 1w
AllDebooks I started The Long Walk in December but bailed as found it troubling and non-festive. 😅 I'll go back to it as I do want to know the outcome. 6d
BarkingMadRead @AllDebooks definitely not festive 🤣 6d
