This book is a bit of a mess. I have no idea why I bought it in the first place but that was in 2008 so a few years ago 😀

It is about grief and the First World War and quantum physica and animal sex and traveling in Latin America. Well, it fits the #SomePlaceCold prompt for #FictionalTraveler2025!

LeahBergen 😆😆 I have books on my shelf like that, too! 3w
sarahbarnes I also have books like that I bought years ago and never read, and then I don‘t enjoy them much when I finally do. 😆 3w
julieclair I must admit I‘m intrigued as to how all those topics fit into one book… 🤔 3w
Suet624 @sarahbarnes yes, exactly. 2w

How an apocalypse could really happen. When the electricity goes out, Rice doesn‘t focus on chaos in cities. His indigenous characters live in far northern Ontario with some knowing how to live off the land. This community responds to the crisis collectively, staying true to their culture, even when outsiders appear to threaten them. A slow beautiful burn of a book with complex & flawed characters. #FictionalTraveler #SomeplaceCold

@julieclair

Amiable Ooh, this looks interesting. Stacking! 3w
DogMomIrene @Amiable 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I‘m going to work the sequel in this year too. 3w
LiseWorks It was a good book 3w

Hooked_on_books I loved this one. It felt so real, especially the lack of really knowing what‘s happened because of breakdown of communications. He really knocked it out of the park. 3w
DogMomIrene @Hooked_on_books Totally agree. At first, I kept reading because I wanted a reason. Like a news story or something to tell me what happened. But then I was reading because I was so invested in the characters and wanted to see how they‘d survive. 3w
julieclair Great review. That cover… so stark and desolate… 3w
DogMomIrene @julieclair They‘re definitely north enough to be alone. Such a great survival story. 3w

Although this didn‘t have the immediate appeal of Away With The Penguins, it is a fitting finale to the trilogy of books about Veronica McCreedy and her penguins.

First book finished for #SeriesLove2025 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

julieclair I didn‘t know there was a trilogy! This one (which I assume must be the first?) has been on my TBR for awhile. 3w
TheEllieMo @julieclair yes, How the Penguins Saved Veronica (known as Away With The Penguins in the UK) is the first, then 3w
julieclair @TheEllieMo Books #2 & 3 are now stacked! Thanks! 3w

2½✨

The atmosphere of this book was done exceptionally well, you could feel the cold, remote emptyness. But I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would.
It started off very slow, and the dynamica of this supposed friend group just felt wrong.
The characters are mostly horrible people; I actually felt like killing some of them just to not have to listen to their POV anymore.
And in the end I felt cheated by the unreliable narrators.

I finished this Friday for #FictionalTraveler January #SomeplaceCold 🧊❄️While it wasn‘t winter in Alaska, there were storms, caves, mine shafts & icehouses that were pretty chilly. This is Book 6 in the Alaska Wild series & while a big plot point was settled & the end was left a bit ambiguous, I‘m hoping the author will continue with this series as I love the characters & the small-town Alaska setting.

DieAReader 🎉Great! 1mo
Tove_Reads Sounds like something I‘ll like to read! 1mo

Joining in #FictionalTraveler with @julieclair & my January #SomeplaceCold pick is set in Alaska. It‘s book #6 in the Alaska Wild mystery series so it will also be a #SeriesLove2025 read too. ❄️ 💙❄️
