Great Expectations | Charles Dickens

Pickpick

I really don't know why I waited so long to read this. I loved it, even though I could feel Pip going in all the wrong directions. It almost has a modern-day mystery feel to it. Admittedly, Joe reminded me a lot of Samwise Gamgee 🤍

AllDebooks @TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN more yays 😊 @dabbe of course, it's my #1 Dickens too 👌 10mo
dabbe @AllDebooks 😘 10mo
CrowCAH Dickens is delightful! I‘ll have to pass on this read along. I‘ll be reading a Winter Solstice Yuletide anthology next month. Thanks for tagging me on the new classic reading title! 10mo
AllDebooks @CrowCAH Enjoy your anthology, sounds like great reading 😍 10mo
Cuilin @dabbe 🩷 Bleak House 10mo

Discussion thread

Apologies for the lateness, I was distracted irl.
So, did you enjoy Dracula? I'm interested to know your thoughts.

🧛‍♂️ Did you like the epistolary format?
🧛‍♂️ Do you think it added to the suspense and tension?
🧛‍♂️ What do you consider to be the main message of the book?
🧛‍♂️ Do you think there is a subtext or deeper meaning?
🧛‍♂️ Why was the book banned?

TheBookHippie Reread for me - but I loved it once again, this format works for me. I think below the surface there‘s a ton of good things to discuss. It‘s banned because of the blood, violence and sexuality. The times were Victorian and the “we don‘t talk about how we live”, kinda like now! Perceived liberation too risky to allude to. 😵‍💫😂🙃🖤 10mo
Cuilin Ok in all honesty, I forgot to read this. I had a copy, I was ready, excited even and somehow life just got in the way. 😞 10mo
See All 18 Comments
AllDebooks @Cuilin pesky real life has a way of doing that sometimes. Don't worry 😊 10mo
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie it's one of my all-time favourites, as well as a good yarn there is so much to unpack. I'll give others a chance to comment before blathering on!! 10mo
BookwormAHN The abridged version I listened to this year stunk but generally I love this book. I think the way its written gives it a sort of mystery and since other than Van Helsing and maybe Lucy, the characters are all very Victorian and proper so I always wonder what they would really like to be doing or saying. Especially Jonathan, he's always so in control of himself. 10mo
dabbe I've read DRACULA quite a few times. This was my 1st with the Daily Dose through email (and it's still going!). I found the long lengths between the letters to be difficult. When I get into a book, I wanna keep going. I can appreciate it, though, because I got to feel (for example) exactly how Mina felt, waiting FOREVER for a note from Jonathan. I never tire of this classic, no matter how I read it. I just bought the annotated version, too! 💜🖤🧡 10mo
CrowCAH Super atmospheric! Love how this is the original text for all other vampire books to be inspired off of! 🧛‍♂️ 10mo
Bluebird Loved this book! I‘m kicking myself I took so long to finally read it. I read via the multicast audio version which was ideal for the epistolary format. I thought this style definitely added to the tension. 10mo
AllDebooks @BookwormAHN I think that the morality of the time period it was written in and battle between good vs evil is what makes it such a compelling story. There are so many contrasts such as gender and equality, science vs superstition, feminine passivity and masculine dominance and reversal as vampiric changes change the women to more aggressive, sexualised creatures. 10mo
AllDebooks @dabbe I admire your persistence. I race through this everytime I read it and still fell the tension. I could not read this at a slow pace. I appreciate your comment on empathasising with Mina. 10mo
AllDebooks @CrowCAH It never ceases to amaze me how atmospheric this book is. The descriptions of Jonathon's time in Dracula's castle are so eerie and creepy. Incredible story. 10mo
AllDebooks @Bluebird This was the first example of epistolary format I ever read and it got me completely hooked on it. Glad you joined us and enjoyed the book. 10mo
Saknicole I definitely love the epistolary format. It‘s funny because I don‘t love it in modern works but I am all about the Victorian Gothic style using it. Make me think I need to up my journaling and letter game 😂 10mo
Saknicole Also here is a hilarious gift of modern day Dracula inspired comedy song writing. https://youtu.be/CUKmd50_niI?si=g8-FMHTpLdfC2Xy- 10mo
AllDebooks @Saknicole 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 10mo
Tineke Hi, can you add me to your taglist? I really want to read the next book with you all. 10mo
AllDebooks @Tineke absolutely. Our next read is December 10mo

This was a reread for me, so I decided to try this edition, mostly because Tom Hiddleston was the voice of Jonathan. It was bad. I didn't mind that it was abridged, but some of the changes were just stupid, and overall,
it was a bad adaptation.

inthegreensandblues That sucks because for how many people might this be their only experience of the story... I just finished reading this book two days ago. It's so good!! 10mo

TheSpineView Fantastic! 10mo
AllDebooks That's very annoying when an abridged version detracts from a beloved story. And a fail from Tom Hiddleston, wow!! I listened to the Audible full version and loved it. 10mo

I'm so happy that I finally read this book. It was wonderful and the perfect read for #scarathlon! Plus, I got to check off a October bucket list item by reading out by my pool this weekend while it was simply beautiful out. Now it is just cold and gloomy.
#rereadtheclassics @AllDebooks

AmyG That looks so nice. We have snow. 🙁 10mo
Morr_Books @AmyG This was Sunday. I even took an hour nap outside. It was just perfect out. However, that night temps dropped 50 degrees but thankfully no snow. 10mo

CatLass007 Dracula and Frankenstein both are on my literary bucket list. I just looked and I have Dracula books with three different narrators. But now I have just one. I‘ve got at least one Frankenstein but my app is acting up so I could have more. 10mo
Morr_Books @CatLass007 I read and listened to Dracula. I enjoyed the narration by Tavia Gilbert & J.P. Guimont 10mo

@AllDebooks this counts for #bannedbookweek too!

I have one copy left of this - it goes to teens often as it‘s banned out of most school libraries- and have a new shiny one on my wishlist I‘m trying not to buy myself 🙃 I‘m excited for the #Rereadtheclassics #buddyread #scarathon
Some how classic literature doesn‘t affect me in this genre 🤷🏻‍♀️🙃😅🖤 I love this and Frankenstein quite a bit.

dabbe #ditto! 🧡🎃🧡 11mo
