This was an amazing book. To be honest I almost did not read it, I had downloaded the audiobook but the narrator was not for me. The print book was much better.
I also had to google a lot of the Latin names and the print book allowed for me to get the spelling correct.
This book force feeds academic theories with little evidence beyond the authors‘ opinions. I wanted a close look at the Matsutake mushroom, instead I got many long theory papers without proper citations.
Read for a biased look at the social & cultural world of Matsutake & for even more bias around the science. Some basic mushroom biology is included
1/5 Skim this book if you want to learn about Matsutake mushrooms; read for academic theory
This was a really strange book. When there are mushrooms involved, I‘m always interested. The main character is a pianist stuck in a loveless marriage, when ghosts of the past suddenly come calling. The lines of reality, dream, and hallucination blur. This is a novel about grief, and the journeys we take to the path of self-realization. I couldn‘t help but think of themes of China‘s ‘left over women‘ in this novel. More on that here:⬇️
Having fun learning from this little book. Finally, some non-research reading!!
