The Fall of Arthur | J.R.R. Tolkien
post image

#MedievalTolkien #FellowshipOfTolkien

So, these are some of the images I've found when l googled 'Avalon Arthur'.
I had never realised before how much of the imagery of the Arthurian legends exists in Tolkien's world.

I enjoyed reading Christopher's comparison between Avalon and Numenor, which wasn't what l was expecting from bringing Arthurian legends and Middle-earth together.

Daisey As always, you found some beautiful images to go along with our reading. They really do fit my imaginings of both worlds. 1w
BarbaraJean It's amazing how these images (especially the two on the right) would fit as illustrations of Middle-earth! 1w

The section about the unwritten poem and notes were interesting and similar to what I expected. However, I was hoping for more in the connections to The Silmarillion. I think I was looking more for character comparison rather than about sailing into the west. I‘ll be curious to hear what everyone else thinks.

BarbaraJean Like you, I was hoping for more connections. Character connections would have been so interesting! It felt like Christopher Tolkien was trying to keep his own ideas/interpretations out of it, but I actually would have liked more of his own analysis here--the topic felt a little thin on material. 1w
JazzFeathers @BarbaraJean @Daisey l actually quite enjoyed it. I remember when we read The Lost Road that Christopher told of that grand idea about connecting different legends from the past, which Tolkien would have probably written (at least in part) had he not written The Lord of the Rings. I didn't imagine some parts actually exist. ⬇️ 1w

JazzFeathers I too was expecting more comparison to the character from the Silmarillion becausecl saw some similarities myself, yet l found the connection between Avalon and Numenor (which l didn't expect) fascinating. 1w
Daisey @BarbaraJean @JazzFeathers I don‘t expect a lot of interpretation from Christopher, as I feel for the most part he always tried to avoid too much of that. I found the connections made between Avalon and Numenor interesting, but just wanted more. It‘s a common thing for me when I read this incomplete works. 1w
BarbaraJean @Daisey I understand why he would try to avoid interpretation, it's just that for this topic I think that's what I wanted 😆 Honestly with these essays so far my main response is that I want more. I'd love to read this book as part of a class on Arthurian myths and legends, to dive deeper into all the sources Tolkien was drawing from. 1w
Daisey @BarbaraJean I think as part of an Arthurian class would be a great way to read it. 1w

Sunday morning book and breakfast

This is the essay I‘m the most intrigued to read, but I also expect to be frustrated by wanting more. After reading several of Tolkien‘s incomplete works, I know kind of what to expect. This includes commentary about Tolkien‘s nearly indecipherable notes and just enough detail to make you want to know more when it‘s impossible.

JazzFeathers 😂 I can't wait to read it too. I kept having Silmarillion vibes while reading the text 😜 2w

I really, really enjoyed this chapter. My teenage me would have loved it, when she was trying to learn everything there was to learn about the Arthurian legends 😁

Considering Tolkien interest in the theme of the fall, I'm not surprised he was fascinated with these legends.
I particularly liked the one about Sir Gawain's revenge. I wonder why Tolkien decided to erase it 🤔

Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes I‘m so far behind. 😬😬 1w
JazzFeathers @Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes I've been very far in all my Tolkien reads lately, but keep going and you'll make it. I'm not so far from catching up, now. You can do it too! 💪😁 1w

This was not the easiest essay to read, but it was fascinating. I found it really interesting how the versions focused on different aspects and diverged from each other. I had to slow down for the Middle English excerpts, but I could decipher almost all of it.

How‘s everyone else‘s reading going?

BarbaraJean This week has been so busy I haven‘t been able to start this first essay yet. Hoping to catch up next week when things in other areas should slow down a bit! 3w
TheAromaofBooks I'm almost finished. It's interesting to see how Tolkien's interpretation differed from some of the traditional stories. I wonder how he would have developed those themes, especially the ones around Guinevere? 2w

Daisey @TheAromaofBooks Yes, it‘s definitely interesting, and every time I read one of his unfinished works it leads to so many more wonderings. 2w
JazzFeathers @TheAromaofBooks I'm totally fascinated with his Guinevere. Such a shame we'll never read her story 🥺 2w
BooksandCoffee4Me I‘m behind on the essays but I‘ll catch up and finish. 👍 I really loved the poem for its alliteration and imagery. 2w

Well, this was seriously epic 🤩
Loved that contrast between Mordred's stormy night and Arthur's and Gewain's bright dawn.
Such a pity this poem never went further 🥺

I keep having Silmarillion vibes.
Can't read the chapter about it.

A few pages of Tolkien, about his poem in comparison to Arthurian tradition, with LaGata tonight.

I read Canto II today and found it took a bit more effort to read than the first one.

The way Tolkien describes Guinevere in this section reminds me of Luthien fleeing from her house in the tree and out of the forest of Doriath.

BooksandCoffee4Me If interested in Tolkien, I highly recommend the book The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings: J.R.R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams, which narrates the biographies of each of the Inklings, including Tolkien, and in addition gives details about the interactions and relationships among the group members. Happy Sunday! My goal this week is to read a canto daily, but I‘m not sure I‘ll manage it consistently. Whether or not I get to post during the week, I‘m happy to be back to some Sunday mornings with Tolkien. I don‘t consider myself much of a poetry fan, but I love this alliterative style of narrative poem. The language is beautiful.

Daisey It‘s also been a while since I‘ve read any version of the Arthur legend, so I may need to look for something in audio form for some comparison. 1mo
JazzFeathers You know? I was a fan of Arthurian legends before l was a Tolkien fan. When l was a teenager, l read both sours materials and many retellings. Yet, it's been a long time. It'll be fun to read something that gets these two passions of mine together 😊 1mo

Daisey @BooksandCoffee4Me I‘ve added you to the tag list for this book! Do you want to be on my master list for Tolkien reads as well to know when we‘re going to start a new book? 4w

Late as always, but l have started this book 😜

But so, this is an original Tolkien?
Is it not a translation, like Gawain and the Green Knight?

@Daisey @wordslinger42 @BookwormAHN @BethM @TheAromaOfBooks @curiouserandcurioser @BarbaraJean @Susanita @AllDeBooks @Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes @AnishalnkSpell

Bookwomble It's a translation exercise he didn't complete 🙂 1mo
Daisey I think we‘ll be able to discuss this better with one of the included essays, but it seems to me from the foreword that retelling of the legend might be better description than translation of any particular version. 1mo
Bookwomble @JazzFeathers Apologies, I was thinking of the medieval “The Death of Arthur“, which Tolkien used as a partial source for his own poem, but it's not a translation. I should fact check myself before rather than after posting! 🙄 (edited) 1mo
JazzFeathers @Bookwomble Don't worry 😂 We're here to learn and discuss. I also keep calling this Mort d'Arthur and used to think it was another translation like Gawain. Such a pity Tolkien didn't finish this. But he was a very busy man, with so many interests. 1mo
