Magic for Marigold | L.M. Montgomery

It was no Jane, Emily, or Anne. I feel so guilty. I don't understand why it was a big deal to be read by a male. He is not a good oral reader. I hope my negativity is because of him, but I don't think so. I didn't like all the misconceptions of the children. By the last hour, it was just background noise. #ChildrensClassicChallenge @TheBookHippie

TheBookHippie This was not what I thought it would be- although I enjoyed Marigold. I‘m glad I read it in bits. 5d
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie there were moments I enjoyed. Saving a family from a house fire because she was homesick. And, moments of clarity with her family. I was waffling between liking it and meh, but what really got my goat was the misconceptions of missionary work. You have to know pain to be close to God. Today, people are turned off from God because of the ways of the republican party and it was just too much for me. 5d
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger God has been used a weapon and vehicle of control, power and manipulation by alt right Christians all the way back to Roman Christians ..from Constantine on it‘s been horrific. Missionary work is a status symbol here. It‘s gross. I think it depends what you have seen and experienced. I don‘t personally think we should ever go into another culture and tell them how to live, love or believe -or anyone for that matter. 5d

rubyslippersreads I haven‘t read this in years, and don‘t remember much about it. The girl on the audiobook cover reminds me of the “disaster girl” meme. 😆 5d
rubyslippersreads @TheBookHippie Wasn‘t it originally a magazine serial? That might explain the religious aspect, depending on what the magazine was. 5d
TheBookHippie @rubyslippersreads Yes and I believe so. It most definitely explains it. I‘m still glad to have read it. 5d

Hello friends!

Looking back on 2021 I‘ve had a hard time motivating myself to read this year. Partly pandemic related, partly being busy, partly just some meh feelings overall. But I‘ve found I‘ve felt most motivated and got the most reading done when I‘m taking part in challenges so I‘d love to do more next year! I‘m already hyped for #booked2021 and I‘d love to learn about any other year long challenges that are running!

DGRachel @BarbaraBB and @Librarybelle are hosting #readingafrica2022. I‘m almost done with #readingasia2021 and it has been so great that I‘m totally doing Africa next year. 3y
Soubhiville I‘ll be joining on reading Africa and always #AuthorAMonth. 3y
sebrittainclark #LitsyAtoZ and #BookspinBingo are my favorite litsy challenges 3y

Butterfinger These are my challenges - #MGBuddyRead (middle grade books), #YABuddyRead (young adults) both with @megnews , #OverbookedClub with Megan and @sblbooks #ReadingAfrica2022 , #AuthorAMonth, #FoodandLit of course 😘 PopSugar, ReadHarder #Booked2022, #ChildrensClassicChallenge with @TheBookHippie #BBRC with @LibrarianRyan #EpicNewberyChallenge I know it is a lot, but my favorite thing about challenges is when you research and the book fits multiple prompts. Best feeling. 3y
bthegood I have joined in on a couple of the book clubs - which motivates me to finish by a “due“ date - Classic Books is #ThatsClassic hosted by @Annie1215 Agatha Christie book club is #AgathaChristieClubR2 hosted by @ferskner and Stephen King book club #LosersClub hosted by @mynameisacolour - there are more book clubs (these are just the ones I've participated in) - 😊 3y
sblbooks #Overbookedclub is a monthly buddy read. We mostly read historical fiction with some others mixed in. You're more than welcome to join us any time. They're going to have #NewYearwhoDis again. Where you swap reading list with a partner. Run by @monalyisha 3y
TheBookHippie I do #childrensclassicread then add the year so watch for #childrensclassicread2022 and I also do #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD ♥️ 3y
Liz_M @Butterfinger What is BBRC? There are too many posts to scroll back to find the original 😊 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I will post a new #nonfiction2022 reading bingo card very soon. And I read with #SheSaid every month, which are all books written by women and mostly nonfiction, with a few fiction thrown in once in awhile. I also read with #StarWarsBuddyRead which is reading the new cannon Star Wars books, and with #PratchettPosse which is reading Terry Pratchett‘s books in publication order, and #ShakespeareReadAlong which is working it‘s way through the plays 3y
Butterfinger @Liz_M Babies and Beyond Reading Challenge. You read picture books (titles start A to Z), leveled readers, middle grade prompts, young adult prompts, adult prompts, and prompts for a mixture of all ages. It runs from July to June. @LibrarianRyan is the organizer. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'll be doing #booked2022 #foodandlit some #authoramonth #sundaybuddyread #thatsclassic and I'm looking forward to two others that aren't rooted in Litsy but have some participants here, The 52 Book Club & Pop Sugar Reading Challenge, whose prompts haven't been announced yet. 3y
Singout #nonfiction2022 that @Riveted_Reader_Melissa organizes is excellent! 3y

If you are going to write a novel to teach virtues, make sure it is like this gem. I need to stop aggravating people which I really enjoy doing just like little Maria. I was tickled with the other names -Marmaduke Scarlet and Loveday Minette.

tpixie Yes! What great names & lessons. I would have loved this book as a child! I just finished it, it was a sweet book! 4y

"It is because people think ONLY about their own business, and won't trouble themselves to stand up for the oppressed, nor being the wrong-doer to light."

Anna Sewell knew to stand up for mistreatment.

This book was as amazing now as it was when I was 10.

Mehso-so

A small handmade doll retells her adventures that includes a whaling ship. It was fine until she compared herself to a slave being sold at an auction. That was way too flippant, in my opinion.

#NewberyEpicChallenge @amber_ldsmom
#ChildrensClassicChallenge @TheBookHippie

TheBookHippie Says a lot to the times, also wow. I think it would be a good format for discussion in how to teach old literature like this. I‘m glad I read it as it‘s on my list of literature to digest gives one pause as to how deeply racism is and has been taught- it‘s just ingrained everywhere. 4y
