Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness
Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness | Jennifer Tseng
19 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
Longlisted for the 2016 PEN Literary AwardBooks may be Mayumi Saitos greatest love and her one source of true pleasure. Forty-one years old, disenchanted wife and dutiful mother, Mayumis work as a librarian on a small island off the coast of New England feeds her passion for reading and provides her with many occasions for wry observations on human nature, but it does little to remedy the mundanity of her days. That is, until the day she issues a library card to a shy seventeen-year-old boy and swiftly succumbs to a sexual obsession that subverts the way she sees the library, her family, the island she lives on, and ultimately herself.Wary of the consequences of following through on her fantasies, Mayumi hesitates at first. But she cannot keep the young man from her thoughts. After a summer of overlong glances and nervous chitchat in the library, she finally accepts that their connection is undeniable. In a sprawling house emptied of its summer vacationers, their affair is consummated and soon consolidated thanks to an explosive charge of erotic energy. Mayumis life is radically enriched by the few hours each week that she shares with the young man, and as their bond grows stronger thanks not only to their physical closeness but also to their long talks about the books they both love, those hours spent apart seem to Mayumi increasingly bleak and intolerable. As her obsession worsens, in a frantic attempt to become closer to the young man, Mayumi nervously befriends another librarian patron, the young mans mother. The two women forge a tenuous friendship that will prove vital to both in the most unexpected ways when catastrophe strikes.Exquisitely written, Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness is part wry confession, part serious meditation. At its most anxious, its a book about time, at its most ecstatic, its a deeply human story about pleasure. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Definitely not for everyone, one review I read said - why turn off people with the premise of a 17 yo and 41 yo having an affair? Moments of great writing, loved the library scenes... I don‘t think it‘s very realistic but I have not read anything like it. Lolita is read by the protagonist many times and I have never been inspired to read it, odd that I finished this one.

I just got my book back from a very long journey through [the remnants of] the #nopostonsundays postal book swap (thanks @abbiereadsbooks) - the overarching reaction is one of discomfort and I think that this is a logical conclusion!
Thanks @leslieseidel @KDo27 @Kshakal @Karkar @whelanmaria @kaitlyn @NerdyRev @HollyB3 @RainyDayReading @Yamich49 for participating, reading and responding.

Kshakal It was so much fun!! 6y
leslieseidel When I first saw your post I thought I don't remember reading this. But I did!! It was so long ago that I forgot that I read it. Glad you got your book back. I got mine back too but it only had about 7 entries. I don't know what path it took. It was a great experience though! Thanks for your timely mailings! 6y
ReadingEnvy @leslieseidel I‘m glad you got your book back. I‘m not sure I had it! But you were the first reader of mine. 6y

I did a little after Christmas shopping for a literature project/study I'm planning. I love Europa books...easily in my top 5 publishers. If you have any recommendations for books in the same vein as 'Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness' please let me know! Doris Lessing is already on my radar 😉.

Pickpick

I loved that this book was relentlessly one flawed person's POV. She was very astute in her self observations at times and utterly deluded at others. I thought the book built up well and I liked the ending. #wellrestedinseattle

When you start a book at midnight on a weekday, you know you're in for a caffeine powered groggy work day. Only Littens will understand the urge to start a book at unearthly hours..

aeeklund Is there any other time to start a book? 8y
ramyasbookshelf @aeeklund 😂😂😂 I know, right? 8y
Yanes I love those nights and I am sure groggy the day afterwards. But it is always worth it, right? 8y

#LyricalApril Day 16: TakeMeToChurch - a 41 year old married librarian propositions a 17 year old boy; sounds like the perfect book for today's meme as well. I am very intrigued by the blurb and really looking forward to reading this one soonest.

Cinfhen I'm intrigued😉 8y

Fun Friday photo again! I love books with Asian or Asian American protagonists. Especially filipinas. Not enough books like that in my opinion. I hope to have my own novel to be part of the group. One day 😊
