If volume 1 was like a spaghetti western mixed with manga, volume 2 was that and World War I. The story is not exactly easy to follow, but the art, and the dual realities, and the world building are all amazing. The bigger issues of the cycle of life and death, who we are, and who others are to us are all woven into the story, and I was surprised by how touching I found it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Today's #riotgram #riotgrams Challenge Day 26 is #mostbadassheroine. I would just be another voice in the choir singing the praises of Princess/General Leia Organa, Katniss, and Hermione, so I'm going to tell y'all instead that this is a good series with some badass women in it.

I am consistently mesmerized by Rios's mind blowing art, DeConnick's utterly compelling storytelling, and Belaire's jaw-dropping colors. I LOVE this comic.

A strong return, one that expands the mythos wonderfully while creating a profoundly engaging allegory on war, fear, & family. #comics

Another for my #womenincomics challenge. I loved this volume so much more than the first one! The flow felt much better to me and the mythology of this series came alive in my head. The artwork is unique and really compliments everything. I found this moving and am so glad I gave the second volume a go after not being blown away by the first one.

Lauredhel Thanks for the review! I wasn't taken with the first one either, but might pick up the second one when it arrives at the library now. 8y
Weaponxgirl @Lauredhel I got motivations a bit more in this one and things from the first volume that seemed a bit odd made more sense to me. I'm a big lover of folklore so glad it's finally getting into a groove I like. Hope you enjoy it too 😀 8y
Foxyfictionista I loved the first one! I need to pick this volume up. ☺️ 8y

Weaponxgirl @Foxyfictionista I didn't not like the first one but this to me had me properly involved:) hope you get to indulge in it soon 8y
ChasingOm Good to know! I wasn't blown away by Vol. 1 either but wanted to give Vol. 2 a chance. 8y
Weaponxgirl @ChasingOm I really liked this one a lot. I was more involved with the outcome here and I'm now looking forward to see where it goes. Bunny and butterfly also make more sense now. It clicked this time 8y

God I love this series. This time the story is set in WWI. I love the layered, dark, folkloric style to DeConnick's writing and Emma Ríos' rich illustrations match it perfectly.

Now to just sit around and wait for volume 3.

ohyeahthatgirl This is one of those comics I can't wait to hit trades. I buy the single issues as they're published. 8y
Dorianna @ohyeahthatgirl I didn't know about this series until the trades came out. But I'm definitely buying the single issues once they start releasing the next volume now. It's so good. 8y

Surely if I consume enough soup and read enough comics this sneaky never ending cold will move on.

Okay I know that's not how this works but a girl can dream. 🤧📕🍲

Foxyfictionista Hope you feel better soon! I think I'm coming Dian with a cold too. 😣 8y
Dorianna @Foxyfictionista Thanks! I'm on the mend. It's just this stubborn nighttime cough and nasal congestion that won't go away. I hope you're not coming down with anything. Whatever crud is going around, it likes to make itself comfy and stick around. 8y
Foxyfictionista @Dorianna I'm glad that you're beginning to feel better! I think mine was just around for a day because I'm feeling much better too. 8y

Pretty Deadly vol 2

I'm in between a Pick and a So-So on this. By the end of it, I do want to read more about the story, so that's a good thing. However, I end up having to read this twice to understand what's happening. The story is a bit difficult to follow and needs to flow better.

ChasingOm YES! I was like that with the first one too. I feel like if I get to the third and am still "meh," I'll give it up. 8y

Instead of the Wild West we have WW1 in this volume. Art is just as amazing and story just as engrossing. This series just keeps getting better. Looking forward to more!

Dorianna This one is currently in my TBR pile. I can't wait to read it. I loved the first volume. 8y

Pretty Deadly Volume 2 transplants its Western-genre cast into the middle of World War I for some epic reaper showdowns. The series continues to innovate in bewilderingly beautiful ways between its dream-like page layouts, lyrical symmetry, and lush, otherworldly imagery that's some of the most original storytelling I've seen in mainstream comics.
